Jimmy Carter Throws A Little Shade At Donald Trump

Former President Jimmy Carter appeared via video Tuesday at the 2016 Democratic National Convention, offering his endorsement of presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and encouraging young people to vote.

He also threw a little shade at Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

”At a moment when it’s become more important than ever to lift people up, to offer hope and a road map for a brighter future, instead, we see a Republican presidential candidate who seems to violate some of the most important moral and ethical principles on which our nation was founded,” Carter said. “We can and must do better.”

Carter said Clinton offers “a stark contrast in both substance and style, and also competence and experience, to what the Republicans have chosen.”

In the video, Carter also praised Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) for discussing issues that matter during their campaigns, and specifically thanked Sanders for getting so many young people involved in the political process.

Your participation — and readership — is much appreciated.

Now, on to today’s article…

(Questions have been modified for clarity and space.)

I need help breaking a cycle of behavior my family is stuck in. To explain, I’ll need to start with events from three years ago.

A that time, my younger sister, who was turning 18, was the victim of a violent crime that left her hospitalized. While she was in the hospital, our parents died, also as a result of violence.

Fast-forward to present day, and my sister, now in her early 20s, is in prison. This is her second trip there for drug-related offenses.

Given this situation, telephone calls with extended family members have become unbearable, because they follow the same script: They ask if I’ve heard how my sister is doing, and when I answer, they then launch into this whole thing about how they feel uncomfortable having a relationship with her, and how I should stay away from her too. This happens every time, without fail, often before they’ll ask how I’m doing.

This is not only frustrating but painful. I manage to go most days without thinking about the past, and I consider that a major victory. But having it brought up again just rips the scab off.

What I’ve tried to make my relatives understand is that it isn’t easy for me to write off my sister. She has no support system and is my last living immediate family member. But it doesn’t seem to matter.

I’m confused and frustrated, and I just want to break this pattern. What should I say to them?
–SatinSpectre; Marysville, OH

You should say everything you just said here: that you’re not going to abandon your sister; that these conversations are opening old wounds; and that something has to change.

I don’t know how many relatives you’re having these conversations with, but I’d make your stance clear to all of them. Pick the medium — phone call, email, whatever — that will allow you to express yourself directly and completely. Tell them that while you want them in your life (assuming you do), their presence is doing more harm than good.

If they care about and respect you, they’ll listen. And once they do, there’s a progression you can follow to ensure they continue to.

First, if they bring up your sister in the future, cut them off immediately, reminding them that’s not a path you want to go down. Don’t let their transgression pass without acknowledgement. It’s like correcting a dog that’s humping your teddy bear — you have to correct them in the moment.

Do this enough, and it should (steadily) regulate their behavior. If it doesn’t, at some point, you’ll want to consider building stronger boundaries. And that might mean cutting off contact completely.

I’m guessing the last thing you want to do is lose more family, but when you think about it, if things don’t change, why would you want to keep talking to these people? What good comes from it? They ignore your wishes and inflict nothing but pain and heartache. How is that helping you?

That’s a last-resort option, of course, but one worth stashing in your back pocket. Because what’s most important is that you do what’s best for you.

Between your sister’s destruction and your parents’ passing, you’ve been dealt a hand that could be generously described as devastating. And while you consider it a “major victory” that you rarely think about the past, that doesn’t mean your past didn’t happen and that it can no longer impact you.

It is impacting you, if in no other way than sabotaging your relationships with your extended family. It’s understandable that you don’t want to talk about it with them, but please talk about it with someone.

I’m no expert, but the aftermath of this trauma has got to be rolling around your psyche, affecting how you go through life. You wouldn’t be human if it weren’t. It’s a ticking time bomb, and the best thing you can do is start defusing it before it blows up.

What Every Parent Needs To Know About Their Kid’s Respiratory Habits

Part of Your Smile, Your Health™ Series, a division of Sleep Fitness, LLC
Co-authored by Keelyn Ross

What are the benefits of nasal breathing?

There is a right way to breathe and a wrong way to breathe. The right way is through the nose, the wrong way is through the mouth. Nasal breathing benefits the body on multiple levels because the nose is super equipped to process incoming air. The nose has a built-in humidifier and filtration system, so when air enters through the nasal passages, it’s warmed and moistened. It is also equipped to sense and destroy harmful bacteria before it enters the body. This means the respiratory system is being supplied with high quality air, which leads to cellular health. Conversely, the mouth will not purify the air before entering the body such that higher amounts of carbon dioxide create a toxic environment. Mouth breathing also causes a lack of oxygen to the brain, which could lead to underdevelopment, and possibly sensory or auditory disorders, such as autism or attention deficit disorder (ADD). This is why it is paramount for everyone, especially new parents, to understand the importance of their child forming good breathing habits.

What are the long-term consequences of chronic mouth breathing?

If someone develops a mouth breathing habit during their developmental years, they are unknowingly programming their body to have a small, set back jaw, a tiny chin and a long face. This is because bones grow in the position they’re ‘trained to’. If the mouth is open, the entire bone and neuromuscular development follows in suit. Besides aesthetic considerations, that same person most likely suffers from temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), commonly referred to as TMJ, meaning their upper and lower jaw do not close in a balanced fashion. This often leads to crooked teeth, chronic headaches and respiratory distress.

5 Characteristics of Mouth Breathing

1. Small & weak looking jaw
2. Forward head posture
3. Lip incompetency (unable to seal)
4. Small, dysfunctional nostrils
5. Underdeveloped or set back jaw

Are there at-home steps parents can take to ensure their child breathes through their nose?

Yes! Make sure they do not suck their thumb, clench or grind their teeth. You can also incorporate a technique developed by Dr. K. Buteyko called mouth taping, where surgical paper tape is placed over the mouth while sleeping, ensuring the child is breathing through their nose at night. There are also a variety of yoga breathing exercises that focus on correct and controlled breathing. Last but not least, teaming up with a myofunctional orofacial therapist can teach your child exercises they can do at home.

Note: Please consult with your healthcare physician before moving forward with any medical advice.

What about the kids who suffer from chronic sinus infections?

Board-certified otolaryngologists who sub-specialize in sleep medicine will assess the respiratory needs of the child and advise the best course of action for them to adequately breathe. Board-certified dentists who sub-specialize in sleep medicine will also be able to assess the anatomy and function of the child’s craniofacial development and offer treatment solutions. Some dentists have in-house myofunctional orofacial therapists who ensure the child’s neuromuscular development is on par with correct anatomical functioning.

Bernie Sanders’ Personal Plea To Delegates: Don’t Protest On Convention Floor

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) called on his supporters to take the high road Monday, as the Democratic National Convention kicked off with a rather raucous start.

Hillary Clinton’s Democratic presidential rival asked delegates in an email Monday afternoon to, “as a personal courtesy” to him, not protest or demonstrate on the convention floor.

“Our credibility as a movement will be damaged by booing, turning of backs, walking out or other similar displays,” Sanders wrote. “That’s what the corporate media wants. That’s what Donald Trump wants. But that’s not what will expand the progressive movement of this country.”

Earlier in the day, Sanders’ supporters booed not only the idea of party unity but also the Vermont senator himself when he urged them to get behind Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee.

In a clear attempt to ease tensions, Sanders sent out an email and text message.

Sanders also addressed his supporters’ frustrations, specifically those that have resulted from the leaked emails showing the Democratic National Committee was working against his campaign. The resignation of Debbie Wasserman Schultz as DNC chair is a “positive sign,” Sanders wrote in his email.

“The political revolution is not about one election or one candidate. It is about transforming America and continuing the fight for economic, social, racial and environmental justice. We have to continue to work together to advance the progressive future we all support,” Sanders wrote. “We have made great progress in the last year. Let’s continue going forward.”

The Vermont senator is scheduled to speak at the convention Monday evening, along with first lady Michelle Obama and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.).

The Big Idea Behind Integrative Medicine

2016-07-25-1469470698-7845448-Hippocrates.jpg

Wherever the art of Medicine is loved, there is also a love of Humanity.

Hippocrates

Integrative medicine is an ecosystem of support for pursuing your own health and well-being. Inside that ecosystem is someone who cares about you.
Integrative medicine is emerging from a successful history of treating physical ailments that often eluded Western modalities of care to become an ecosystem of support for health and wellness. Possibly the most visible sign of this development is the increasing attention of integrative medicine to primary care, where prevention and regard for the whole person is most critical.

What distinguishes integrative medicine as an approach is that it distances itself from the traditional model of a patient dependent on an expert. Rather, it embraces a genuine clinical partnership in which both the patient and the care provider have something to offer in pursuit of the patient’s optimal health. The care provider embodies not only clinical knowledge, which is the result of his or her training, but also qualities not always associated with experts. These include curiosity, emotional support, collaboration, humor, and the ability to articulate options and alternatives without judgment. Patients are participants as well, offering knowledge of what has worked for them in the past, providing information that can’t be quantified on a medical report, and finding meaning and purpose in their response to the challenges faced when confronted by illness.

The power of integrative medicine comes from acknowledging the multiple dimensions that can cause illness and an equal respect for the various modalities that can address healing and cure. Freed from a traditional repertoire of either pharmacological or surgical solutions (pills or knife), integrative medicine practitioners have expanded the treatment landscape to include nutrition, bodywork, chiropractic, mindfulness-based stress reduction, integrative psychotherapy, and ancient healing practices such as Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. From exploring the optimal chemistry for our digestive tract to treating autoimmune conditions to finding novel ways to address trauma, integrative medicine is showing us a whole new way to educate ourselves about health and take responsibility for our own well-being.

The emerging field of integrative care is as much an idea as a set of practices. The idea is of an ecosystem of support, an intersecting set of relationships that address the whole human package — body, mind, heart, and soul. And at the center of this ecosystem of support are people who care about you. The ability to be seen by a team of providers and staff who value you as a whole person is a central premise permeating all other techniques and practices.

I am reminded of the support that the poet W.H. Auden gave Dr. Oliver Sacks when he was composing Awakenings, a book about his work with a group of patients who had been in a decades-long sleep and were now coming back to consciousness. Auden wrote: “You’re going to have to go beyond the clinical. … Be metaphorical, be mystical, be whatever you need.” I find here the implication that it is our deep regard for the human condition that moves us beyond the complacent and routine. It is in our profound respect for service to others that we touch mystery and wholeness. At the heart of integrative medicine is a bold invitation to go beyond the clinical, into regions that capture our hearts and imagination. Caring is fundamental. Nothing else really matters without love as an organizing principle. Or as one patient I know told her physician, “I just want someone who gives a damn.”

Caring relationships can and should be with our care providers, but they must also be evident in our social networks, our family, and our community, and in our relationship with nature. Beyond the particular type of care we receive is a broader view of health that includes the social and relational. Caring is about how we manifest love in the form of looking out for each other, witnessing, supporting, provoking, and optimizing our capacity to face health and illness, life and death, with dignity. Wise old Hippocrates had it right: Where the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity.

I had the opportunity to talk about all this with Dr. Jeff Draisin, co-medical director of the Institute for Health and Healing. IHH operates a network of clinics in Northern California and has pioneered integrative medicine practice there for nearly 25 years. Here are seven distinctions he articulated about the emerging field of integrative care. I think he captures something here of essence, particular themes that direct our attention to what matters most and the attributes that together make a whole.

Integrative care does the following:

  • It shifts our understanding of care from a focus on illness and shortcomings to a focus on well-being, personal growth, and transformation.
  • It cares for the whole person by addressing mind, body, and spirit as three interacting elements that together result in health and well-being.

California City Bans Deceptive Ads By Anti-Abortion Pregnancy Clinics

OAKLAND, Calif. ― The city council here has tightened regulations around pregnancy clinics that try to fool prospective patients with advertisements falsely suggesting that they perform abortions.

The ordinance, passed last week, makes Oakland the second U.S. city to target advertising by so-called crisis pregnancy centers that mask an anti-abortion agenda, according to organizations promoting abortion rights. San Francisco passed a similar ordinance in 2011.

Some such clinics have used billboards and online ads to trick women into thinking that they perform abortions or offer other emergency contraceptive care, according to Amy Everitt, NARAL Pro-Choice California director. She said she’s troubled that searching Google for information about abortions in Oakland brings up results for nearby centers that don’t provide the service.

“When women are seeking reproductive health care, it is time-sensitive and urgent,” said Everitt. “When you put an entity or organization in the way that’s specifically targeting them to deceive them into wasting their time and delay them from accessing other care, what that creates for the women and families of California is a public harm.”

Anti-abortion centers, also known as limited-service pregnancy centers, outnumber Planned Parenthood’s 115 clinics in California, a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman said. An exact count is difficult because many centers are not registered with authorities, and they often change names. A list compiled by California ProLife Council includes 190 crisis pregnancy centers.

The problem extends to websites that include inaccurate medical information about pregnancies, or that overstate the dangers of abortions and the morning-after pill. Oakland officials representing city council and the city attorney highlighted passages on OptionOnline.org, which refers women to crisis pregnancy centers in the Bay Area, as the kind of misleading medical advice that might run afoul of the law.

“Many pregnancies result in miscarriage so an abortion might not be necessary,” the website says. Another passage warns that the Plan B and emergency contraception pills “can actually hurt you if you take them while you are pregnant.”

Violators can be fined and sued by Oakland’s city attorney if they refuse to take down contested ads.

Support Circle, a licensed medical clinic with three sites in the Bay Area, including one in Oakland, is one facility that has relied on deceptive advertising to shade its anti-abortion stance, according to Oakland officials.

“Support Circle is a safe place where you can sort out your thoughts and feelings in a non-pressured environment, and make healthy, well-informed choices in line with your core values,” the clinic website says. The organization counsels against abortion.

“Clients can meet with medical professionals and receive information about early pregnancy symptoms, the morning after pill, abortion, the abortion pill, emergency contraception, Plan B, Ella, pregnancy and drugs, pregnancy and smoking, pregnancy and alcohol, and miscarriage,” the Support Circle website continues.

Support Circle did not respond to The Huffington Post’s inquiries.

A conservative legal organization that has represented crisis pregnancy centers said Oakland’s new law is flawed. The ordinance assumes women don’t research the services offered at crisis pregnancy centers before going to one, said Brad Dacus, Pacific Justice Institute president.

“My fear is that abortion clinics like Planned Parenthood will succeed in achieving their end goal that women in crises will not receive compassionate counseling to alternatives and that more women will abort their unborn babies,” Dacus said. He said the law was motivated by Planned Parenthood’s desire for more customers.

County health officials encouraged Oakland to pass the law, saying crisis pregnancy centers interfere with prenatal care in other ways. Some of the clinics target residents of low-income neighborhoods and force women to transfer to doctors and clinics 20 weeks to 24 weeks into their pregnancies, when it’s too late to obtain an abortion, according to a June letter from Alameda County Public Health Department officials. Doctors and clinics that pick up these patients have complained that the crisis pregnancy centers delay sharing critical lab results and other medical records, according to the letter.

“We do not have the resources to compete with the misleading advertising of the crisis pregnancy centers,” the letter says.

San Francisco’s law was challenged by an anti-abortion center that contended it violated free speech rights. A federal judge upheld the ordinance in 2015, saying commercial speech can be regulated.

“Oakland respects the activists’ right to express their views and counsel against abortion. If their message is truly compelling, they should have no problem being honest about what they do and do not offer,” City Attorney Barbara Parker said in a statement. “If they refuse to be honest, the City Attorney will have the power to sue violators to hold them accountable.”

Donald Trump Is ‘A Unique Threat To American Democracy:’ Washington Post

The candidacy of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is a problem that transcends party lines and threatens the very fiber of American democracy, The Washington Post editorial board wrote in an op-ed first posted online Friday.

The Republican nominee is “uniquely unqualified” to be president, the board wrote, citing his temperament and lack of experience.

“Mr. Trump’s politics of denigration and division could strain the bonds that have held a diverse nation together,” the board said. “His contempt for constitutional norms might reveal the nation’s two-century-old experiment in checks and balances to be more fragile than we knew.”

The board struggles to pick which aspect of Trump poses the biggest threat ― as any single characteristic could have devastating consequences.

That list includes Trump’s inexperience, his ignorance of the Constitution, his dismissive attitude toward the limits of executive power and the law, his stoking of violent, bigoted fervor at his rallies and his indulgence of conspiracy theories

“The Republican Party has moved the lunatic fringe onto center stage,” the board wrote.

The last time a major party nominated someone without electoral experience for president was in 1953, with Dwight D. Eisenhower. Trump doesn’t come close to Eisenhower, the board wrote, and his views don’t improve on his lack of experience.

“To the extent he has views, they are wrong in their diagnosis of America’s problems and dangerous in their proposed solutions,” they wrote.

The Post also slammed Trump’s ongoing refusal to release his tax returns, his disinterest in reading books or anything that doesn’t concern himself; his propensity for lying and his flip-flopping on major policy issues like gun control and abortion access.

The paper stepped outside conventional boundaries in publishing its non-endorsement so far out from Election Day. The Post, like many newspapers, typically endorses a presidential candidate in October. But it hasn’t taken that long for its board to rule Trump out.

“[W]e cannot salute the Republican nominee or pretend that we might endorse him this fall,” they wrote. “A Trump presidency would be dangerous for the nation and the world.”

The Post’s criticism of Trump goes back to March, when he sat for an interview with the entire editorial board. The paper later summed up the experience as “baffling,” starting with Trump’s dodge of a question over whether he’d consider a nuclear strike against the so-called Islamic State terrorist group that pivoted into Trump telling the room of journalists how attractive they were.

The Post stood by its criticisms of rival Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, but said Trump’s deficiencies stand alone.

“Mr. Trump is a unique and present danger.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

Dial Up The Frequency Of Love — It’s All Good

2016-07-22-1469207541-594798-11780058_10153129790107149_3221575478209974355_o.jpg

“The world has gone crazy!”

“People have lost their minds!”

“It’s not a safe place!”

“The world is going to hell in a hand basket!”

SO.MUCH.FEAR.

How about instead of getting sucked up into that vortex, we dial up the frequency of Love?

Yes, there is a lot of upheaval, chaos, if you will. And instead of trying to control it and being afraid of it, we can look at it for what it is:

The perfect unfolding in which many blessings lie. The new paradigm emerging as the old ones crumble.

It’s all good.

Fear, scarcity and lack are not sustainable anymore. That’s why it’s showing up more than ever. It’s fighting for it’s last breath. It’s always been there – all the horrors that are happening around the world – we just know where it lives now.

It’s in our face.

Why?

Because we are waking up!

I learned that in space when light expands and hits darkness, there is initial friction when they meet before light expands some more.

So, shine on and embrace the friction, knowing that on a grander scale, everything is playing out as it should for one simple reason…

To restore balance and harmony.

Does that rub you the wrong way?

Ah, there’s the friction.

Do you want to defend the limitations of being right? After all, there’s so many stories to support why the world has gone mad. Just turn on the news, read the paper, or log in to the social networks.

Instead, dare to Love even when it seems impossible or even when it feels wrong – after all, shouldn’t we be raging when yet another act of violence has been reported across the globe? Doesn’t that show we care? So, how can we love when atrocities are happening around the world?

How can we not?

I do know from experience that Love is the most powerful frequency on the planet and it’s always there because it’s all there is. We are conduits for that frequency. We can at any moment choose to allow Love to flow through us.

Talk about true power.

Ask yourself how it feels and what it looks like to dial up the frequency of Love when, in that moment, you want to react and post away on social media the expression of your rage.

Pause and pay attention to what comes up for you.

I definitely have my reactions to what’s happening in the world and I have my feelings about it. When I’m triggered, I step away and deal with my emotions first. I allow them to show me what it is I’m really upset about.

I check in with myself before I post anything. Am I coming from a place of Love? If not, I do not post.

These are extraordinary times to be living on the planet. Extraordinary times to be choosing Love.

So no matter what’s happening around you, I dare you to dial up the frequency of Love.

And then pay attention to what happens.

Because, as a friend of mine always says, “It’s all good.”

And it is.

Study Finds Drop In Prescription Drugs In Medical Marijuana States

States looking for a way to reduce Medicare spending and prescription drug use may want to turn to legalizing medical marijuana, a new study suggests.

The District of Columbia and the 17 states that had medical marijuana as an alternative to prescription drugs in 2013 saved an estimated total of $ 165.2 million in Medicare program and enrollee spending that year, researchers at the University of Georgia reported in the journal Health Affairs this month.

“The results suggest that if all states had implemented medical marijuana the overall savings to Medicare would have been around $ 468 million,” a press release on the findings stated.

The researchers looked at prescriptions filled by Medicare Prescription Drug Plan (or Part D) enrollees from 2010 to 2013. They then narrowed the prescriptions down to ones that could be substituted with medical marijuana. Those prescriptions were for ailments that included anxiety, depression, glaucoma, nausea, pain, psychosis, seizures, sleep disorders and spasticity.

Their results found that there were fewer prescriptions filled for the majority of those categories. The pain category, for instance, saw a decrease in 1,826 daily doses, while the depression category saw a 265 daily dosage decrease.

As the researchers noted in their release, they specifically looked at glaucoma patients’ use of marijuana.

“It turns out that glaucoma is one of the most Googled searches linked to marijuana, right after pain,” Dr. David Bradford of the university’s School of Public & International Affairs, who co-authored the report, stated in the university’s release.

The eye disease can be extremely painful and lead to blindness for some patients. Those sufferers who use marijuana, however, can experience a 25 percent decrease in eye pressure that’s caused by the condition, according to the release.

The relief provided by marijuana only lasts about 60 minutes, however, and expecting patients to take it once an hour is considered “unrealistic,” they concluded. Because of that, they stated that they fully expected prescription drug use to remain strong for the disease even when marijuana was an available alternative.

As the university’s release notes, “they were not disappointed.”

Though there were fewer drug prescriptions written for the other ailments, the daily doses of prescribed glaucoma medications increased, they stated.

That led them to believe that medical marijuana users are not requesting prescriptions just to enjoy a high, but are basing their decision on medical needs.

“The results suggest people are really using marijuana as medicine and not just using it for recreational purposes,” the study’s lead author, Ashley Bradford, who completed her bachelor’s degree in sociology in May, said in a statement.

Speaking in a recent YouTube interview, Bradford expressed hope “that this research will influence and reform policymaking.”

Decreasing Americans’ use of prescription drugs may not just be of monetary benefit, but depending on the type of drug, could help fight Americans’ addiction to prescription painkillers as well.

The U.S. is in the midst of an opioid overdose epidemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

In 2014 alone, opioids ― including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin ― killed more than 28,000 people, more than any year on record. At least half of all those deaths involved a prescription opioid.

“We now know that overdoses from prescription opioid pain relievers are a driving factor in the 15-year increase in opioid overdose deaths,” the CDC states on their website. “Since 1999, the amount of prescription opioids sold in the U.S. nearly quadrupled, yet there has not been an overall change in the amount of pain that Americans report.”

Three of the most common prescription drugs involved in opioid overdose deaths were methadone, oxycodone and hydrocodone.

Today, 25 states and Washington, D.C., have some form of legalized medical marijuana.

Former Manson Family Member Leslie Van Houten Denied Parole By California Governor

July 22 (Reuters) – California Governor Jerry Brown on Friday overturned the parole recommendation of Leslie Van Houten, who as a follower of cult leader Charles Manson, took part in one of the most notorious mass murders of the 20th century.

A two-member panel of California’s Board of Parole Hearings in April recommended parole for Van Houten, 66, who is serving a life sentence for stabbing to death Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in their Los Angeles home on Aug. 10, 1969.

Manson, also serving a life sentence, directed Van Houten and his other mostly young, female followers – known as the Manson Family – to murder seven people that month in what prosecutors said was part of a plan to incite a race war between whites and blacks.

“I find the evidence shows that she currently poses an unreasonable danger to society if released from prison,” Brown wrote in his decision.

Van Houten was found guilty of the LaBianca murders in 1971 and sentenced to death but that conviction and sentence were overturned on appeal. She was retried, convicted and sentenced to life in prison in 1978.

The La Biancas were stabbed to death, after which the killers used their blood to write “Rise,” “Death to Pigs” and “Healter-Skelter,” a misspelled reference to a Beatles song, on the walls and a refrigerator door.

Among the victims of the Manson Family in August of 1969 was actress Sharon Tate, the pregnant wife of filmmaker Roman Polanski. She was stabbed 16 times by cult members.

Four other people were stabbed or shot to death at Tate’s home on Aug. 9, 1969, by Manson’s followers, who scrawled the word “Pig” in blood on the front door before leaving. Van Houten was not involved in the Tate murders.

Manson is serving a life sentence at Corcoran State Prison in California for the seven Tate-LaBianca killings and the murder of another man, Gary Hinman, in July 1969.

Van Houten, who has been incarcerated for 46 years, has “developed greater maturity, independence and responsibility” and has “led a pro-social lifestyle,” Brown noted in his decision. She also earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees while in prison, where she has received positive commendations from staff, Brown wrote.

However, Van Houten has said she committed the crime because she was manipulated by Manson and that she was following his orders, claims that were refuted by Brown in his decision.

“Van Houten’s statements give the false impression that she was a victim who was forced into participating in the Family without any way out,” Brown wrote. (Reporting By Brendan O’Brien; Editing by Tom Hogue)

11 Ways To Instantly Connect With Anyone

2016-07-21-1469128595-7816956-HowToInstantlyConnectWithAnyoneHP.jpg

Too many people succumb to the mistaken belief that the ability to connect with others is a natural, unteachable trait that belongs to only a lucky few. It’s easy to fall prey to this misconception. In reality, this ability is under your control, and it’s a matter of emotional intelligence (EQ).

Research conducted by Matthew Lieberman at UCLA shows that being social and connecting with others is as fundamental a human need as food, shelter, and water. For example, Lieberman discovered that we feel social pain, such as the loss of a relationship, in the same part of the brain that we feel physical pain.

The primary function of this brain area is to alert us to threats to our survival. It makes you realize how powerful and important social connection is. We’re hard wired to be social creatures.

“The most basic of all human needs is the need to understand and be understood.” -Ralph Nichols

MRIs of the brain show that social thinking and analytical thinking involve entirely different neural networks and that they operate something like a seesaw. When you engage in analytical thinking, the social part of your brain quiets down, but as soon as you’re finished, the social network springs back to life.

The social brain is the end of the seesaw where the fat kid sits; it’s our brain’s default setting.

Given that social connection is such a fundamental human need, you’d think that it would be easy to connect with everyone we meet. Unfortunately, that’s not the case. Against our own self-interest, we get bogged down by shyness, self-consciousness, cynicism, pride, competitiveness, jealousy, and arrogance.

If you can get that baggage out of the way, you can connect with anyone–even those who are still holding on to their own. Here are some tips that will help you to connect instantly with everyone you meet.

1. Leave a strong first impression. Most people decide whether or not they like you within the first seven seconds of meeting you. They then spend the rest of the conversation internally justifying their initial reaction. This may sound terrifying, but by knowing this, you can take advantage of it to connect with anyone.

First impressions are tied intimately to positive body language. Becoming cognizant of your gestures, expressions, and tone of voice (and making certain they’re positive) will draw people to you like ants to a picnic. Using an enthusiastic tone, uncrossing your arms, maintaining eye contact, and leaning towards the person who’s speaking are all forms of positive body language that high-EQ people use to draw others in. Positive body language can make all the difference in a conversation. It’s true that how you say something can be more important than what you say.

2. Be the first to venture beyond the superficial. Our first conversation or two with a new acquaintance tends to be pretty superficial. We portray a careful picture of ourselves, and we stick to nice, safe topics. We talk about the weather and people we know in common and share the most basic details about ourselves. But if you really want to connect with somebody, try upping the ante and revealing the real you. You don’t need to get too personal, but it’s important to let the other person know what you’re passionate about. Most of the time, if you open up, the other person will follow your lead and do the same.

3. Ask good questions. If the other person seems hesitant to open up, encourage them to do so by asking substantial questions. “What do you do?” doesn’t further the relationship nearly as much as, “Why did you choose your profession?” Search for questions that will help you to understand what makes the other person tick, without getting too personal.

4. Learn from them. In the course of his research, Lieberman concluded that our educational system would be much more effective if we tapped into the social side of learning, rather than trying to squash it. For example, the best way to help an eighth-grader struggling with math would be to have him get help from another student. Apply that same principle to your life, and be willing to learn from the person you’re trying to connect with. Not only does that make them feel more bonded to you, it makes them feel important. It also shows that you’re willing to be vulnerable and aren’t too proud to admit that you have much to learn.

5. Don’t make them regret removing the mask. If your new acquaintance does you the honor of opening up, don’t make them regret it. Sarcasm, criticism, or jokes that might make the other person feel judged for what they’ve shared are major faux paus. Instead, empathize with their approach to life, which you can do even if you don’t agree with their beliefs, and then reciprocate by revealing more about yourself.

6. Look for the good in them. Our culture can often predispose us toward cynicism. We seem to focus on finding reasons not to like people instead of reasons to like them. Shut that cynical voice off, and concentrate on looking for the good in a new acquaintance. For one thing, that keeps you from writing someone off too soon, but more importantly, when you expect the best from people, they’re likely to deliver it.

7. Smile. People naturally (and unconsciously) mirror the body language of the person they’re talking to. If you want people to like you, smile at them during a conversation and they will unconsciously return the favor and feel good about you as a result.

8. Use their name. Your name is an essential part of your identity, and it feels terrific when people use it. You shouldn’t use someone’s name only when you greet them. Research shows that people feel validated when the person they’re speaking with refers to them by name during a conversation. When you meet someone, don’t be afraid to ask their name a second time if you forget it right after you hear it. You’ll need to keep their name handy if you’re going to remember it the next time you see them.

9. Follow the platinum rule. We all know the golden rule, and it’s pretty easy to follow. The platinum rule is harder to follow because it requires us to treat people the way they want to be treated. Not only does doing so make the other person more comfortable–and therefore more likely to open up–but it also proves that you’ve been listening and have really heard what they’ve been telling you. And that shows extra effort on your part.

10. Don’t make it a contest. We’ve all seen the stereotypical sit-com scene where two guys in a bar spend the night trying to one-up each other. The same thing happens when you meet someone new. Their accomplishments and life experience sneak up on you and make you feel the urge to make yourself look just as good (if not better). Doing so may stroke your ego, but it doesn’t help you to connect with them. It keeps you focused on yourself when you should be trying to learn about them and find common ground.

11. Turn off your inner voice. One giant thing that keeps us from connecting with other people is that we don’t really listen. Instead, we’re thinking while the other person is talking. We’re so focused on what we’re going to say next or how what the other person is saying is going to affect us down the road that we fail to hear what’s really being said. The words come through loud and clear, but the meaning is lost.

You must turn off this inner voice if you want to connect deeply with people. So what if you forget what you were going to say or if the conversation moves in a different direction before you have a chance to make your point. If your real goal is to connect with a person, you have to shut off your own soundtrack long enough to focus on what they’re telling you.

Bringing It All Together

The good news is that we’re programmed to connect with each other; we just keep getting in our own way. Try these tips the next time you meet someone new, and watch a superficial conversation turn into a real connection.

How do you connect with people? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Alcohol Is Even Deadlier Than You Think, Study Suggests

A new study suggests that alcohol is a direct cause of cancer in several areas of the body.

The study, published Thursday in the scientific journal Addiction, consists of a major review of 10 years’ worth of studies from several organizations, including the World Cancer Research Fund, the American Institute for Cancer Research and the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

And its conclusions are dire.

Nearly 6 percent of cancer deaths worldwide can be linked to alcohol, including in people who drink light to moderate amounts of alcohol, the study concludes. “From a public health perspective, alcohol is estimated to have caused approximately half a million deaths from cancer in 2012,” wrote study author Jennie Connor, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

The study determined that there is a strong link between alcohol consumption and cancer in specific areas of the body, such as the liver, colon, esophagus and female breast. There are also causal contributions in other areas such as the prostate, pancreas and skin.

How alcohol causes cancer is not deeply understood, according to the study, but it is thought to depend on the “target organ.” For example, cancers of the throat, mouth and liver can be largely attributed to a carcinogenic compound called acetaldehyde. Salivary acetaldehyde levels have been found to reach high levels when drinking.

Breast tissue is another area that seems to be particularly susceptible to alcohol.

Connor noted the United Kingdom’s Million Women Cohort study, which found that women who drank 70 to 140 grams of alcohol per week experienced a 13 percent increase in breast cancer and a 5 percent increase in total cancer compared to those who drank less than 20 grams per week.

Unfortunately, the amount you drink might not matter all that much. While heavy drinkers have a higher risk of liver, colon and laryngeal cancer than light drinkers, all drinkers have the same risk of mouth, esophagus, breast and pharynx cancer.

Connor also acknowledges that some of the studies she reviewed show that those who drink light to moderate of alcohol have a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular disease than abstainers.

But many epidemiologists agree that research confirms alcohol actually causes cancer, Connor wrote, while the relationship between drinking and heart disease is not as conclusive.

For example, other lifestyle factors beyond alcohol consumption ― such as a person’s healthy behavior and demographic conditions ― typically put abstainers at a higher risk than those who moderately drink. Connor cites a 2005 study that showed 27 out of 30 risk factors for cardiovascular disease were more prevalent in abstainers than moderate drinkers.

“Promotion of health benefits from drinking at moderate levels is seen increasingly as disingenuous or irrelevant in comparison to the increase in risk of a range of cancers,” she wrote in the study.

As a solution to alcohol-attributed cancer, Connor suggests everyone should reduce their alcohol consumption, not just heavy drinkers.

“Population-wide reduction in alcohol consumption will have an important effect on the incidence of [cancer], while targeting the heaviest drinkers alone has limited potential,” she wrote in the study.

However, most people today are hesitant to adapt to the facts. While the majority of the population readily accepts that smoking causes lung cancer, “alcohol’s causal role is perceived to be more complex than tobacco’s,” Connor wrote.

For this reason, simply getting people to stop drinking to prevent cancer ― as many have done in the case of smoking ― is broadly considered unacceptable.

Connor also warns of the backlash that research such as her own may receive from alcohol companies.

“There will be orchestrated attempts to discredit the science and the researchers, and to confuse the public,” she wrote. “The stakes are high for alcohol industries when there is no argument, on current evidence, for a safe level of drinking with respect to cancer.”

Ultimately, alcohol is just one of many factors that can cause cancer, but Connor’s study suggests reducing consumption or even partaking in a “dry period” as steps in the right direction to reduce your risk.

World Leaders And Mourners Stand With Munich After Deadly Shooting

National leaders and mourners around the globe are extending their support to people in Munich, Germany, after a deadly shooting rampage there left at least 10 people dead, including the gunman, and several more wounded.

The community was in lockdown during the massive manhunt for the susepct and has entered a state of emergency, joining a growing list of many states around the world in recent months.

While local police have said they suspect the shooting is a “terror attack,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s chief of staff, Peter Altmaier, said authorities could not yet confirm nor rule out a link to terrorist groups.

U.S. President Barack Obama vowed his country would offer Germany “all the support that they may need,” and praised the work of law enforcement officials.

The White House also issued a statement: “The resolve of Germany, the United States, and the broader international community will remain unshaken in the face of acts of despicable violence such as this.”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his condolences on social media Friday afternoon, pledging solidarity with Germany.

French President Francois Hollande extended his sympathy and support to Merkel in a personal message just over a week after a horrific terror attack gripped his nation.

U.S. presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton also vowed to “stand with” those affected in Germany. Her Republican counterpart Donald Trump offered his prayers, and emphasized the threat of terrorism.

Mourners on social media also shared their condolences, using the hashtag #PrayForMunich to remind the community that it is not alone.

WATCH: Refocus (Getting Back on Track)

There are a lot of things going on that are demanding our focus – and take us away from where we can be most powerful and do the most good for ourselves and others. I hope this will help.

If you are new to tapping, it will be beneficial to also watch the first episode in the “Tap Out Your Fears” series — which explains the basics of EFT — click here.

As with any of my tapping videos, this is an abbreviated process for releasing uncomfortable feelings and enhancing good ones. Some folks may find their fear dissolve after just one tapping session, but for others, it will take some repetition, bringing the discomfort down little by little each time. (Still others may uncover specific issues that are best addressed directly with a wellness practitioner.) In any event, this brief video should help at least take the edge off the discomfort, freeing you up to enjoy life much more. Let us know how it helped you!

For a picture of the tapping points — and more info on EFT — click here.

Tapping can sometimes bring up long-buried emotions, which is why I state that, before tapping along, folks must take full responsibility for their own well-being. For more information about that, please read this disclaimer.

Until next time, feel free to tap along with any of the many videos I have on YouTube or the many recordings I have at www.TapWithBrad.com.

For EFT with kids, please visit: www.TheWizardsWish.com.

The Psychological Reason Conservatives Band Together Faster Than Liberals

By Drake Baer

When Donald Trump picked the Mulan-hating, Titanic-loving gubernatorial goober Mike Pence to be his vice-presidential pick, he said that it was about “party unity.” And indeed, as the flopping of the Never Trump movement at the Republican National Convention shows, the GOP has indeed rallied around Trump — why else would Ted Cruz get booed offstage for withholding his endorsement?

It’s a fascinating display of what political psychologists have come to call “shared reality theory.” Similar to how some people need certainty more than others, researchers have found that people are more or less motivated to get their beliefs reconfirmed by the people around them. Sharing reality functions as “a sort of social glue,” University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign psychologist Chadly Stern and Stanford University researcher Robb Willer write in a new column for the Washington Post, “without which we would be unable to communicate, work in teams and achieve shared goals.” When you have a strong sense of shared reality, it helps you to come to think that your “beliefs reflect objective reality” and that they’re shared by your friends and family.

Related: If You Want Less Police Violence, Hire More Female Cops

As you may surmise by the way fans of right-wing commentator Rush Limbaugh refer to themselves as “dittoheads,” studies indicate that conservative people have a higher need for “shared reality.” Liberals, on the other hand, tend toward the opposite — rather than wanting to share the same reality with their kin, they’re more motivated to be unique, agreeing with statements like “in group activities, I’m somewhat of a nonconformist,” while conservatives are more likely to agree that it’s important to them to “see the world in a similar way” as others do. And in matters both political (abortion) and nonpolitical (coffee) conservatives are more likely to overestimate how much their beliefs match those of their fellow conservatives, while liberals underestimate how much their beliefs are like other liberals. And guess what: According to Stern’s research, people who report that they think their peers share their beliefs with them are more likely to vote.

Therein lies the difficulty of organizing liberals, which Stern and Willer compare to the “proverbial herding of cats” in their Post column. The liberal impulse to nonconformity may be what drives social progress — but it also makes it harder for the party to unify, the Democratic Party, to be precise. It’s a fascinating irony: Liberals might be theoretically more collectivist, pushing for policy that benefits the public good, but their individualism makes it harder to build a coalition. Just ask your nearest Bernie bro.

No One’s Enjoying The Republican Convention More Than Jeffrey Lord

CLEVELAND ― The chairman of Breitbart News extends an invitation for a livestream interview. A passerby asks if it’s a struggle being a conservative on CNN. And the inventor of “My Pillow” offers to send one in the mail.

That’s just a few minutes in the life of Jeffrey Lord at the Republican National Convention.

“As you can see, I get stopped,” Lord remarked. “It’s amazing.”

Lord is quick to throw around words like “amazing,” “terrific” and “fabulous” when describing his experience at CNN this past year.

And why not? At 65, Lord has become perhaps the most unlikely TV news celebrity of the election. A former Reagan administration official, Lord hasn’t attended a Republican convention in nearly three decades. He currently lives in a small suburb outside Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where his primary job is taking care of his 97-year-old mother.

Yet Lord’s made hundreds of appearances on CNN over the year as Donald Trump’s unflappable defender through a steady stream of controversies. (Lord said he’s been told the number’s nearly 600 over the past 13 months). He’s been appearing for several hours each night during the Republican convention and will be on-air through the Democrats’ gathering next week in Philadelphia.

Lord’s benefited this election cycle from a dearth of TV-ready, conservative pundits willing to defend Trump against his detractors on the left and right. Some commentators were aligned with other Republican candidates, while others vowed “Never Trump” given the candidate’s extreme views and offensive comments. CNN has since built a stable of pro-Trump analysts, including Kayleigh McEnany, Scottie Nell Hughes, and most controversially, former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.

At times, Lord has defended the seemingly indefensible. He suggested Trump’s racist remarks about a judge in a case involving Trump University were rather evidence of citing racism. Lord jousted for nearly 20 minutes as a panel of seven other conservative and liberal pundits had none of it.

In another controversial moment, Lord described the Ku Klux Klan as a “leftist” group, a designation the Southern Poverty Law Center dismissed as “up-is-down historical balderdash.”

Lord, however, is unlikely to be swayed by fact-checkers. And he doesn’t seem bothered by pushback against his views.

“I think the world of Van [Jones],” he said of his frequent sparring partner. “We just disagree. That’s all. Sometimes our disagreements wind us up on the front pages. And we’re trending and all this. He nudged me one morning and said, ‘My God, we’re trending on Twitter.’”

A John F. Kennedy fan growing up, Lord cites the late Democratic president’s line that “race has no place in American life or law” as where he’d ideally like to see the country today. “That we’re all Americans,” he said. “That’s where I am and where I see the left today is resuming their sort of historic position where everybody’s going to be judged by skin color.”

Lord said he initially supported Democratic Senator Robert Kennedy for president in the 1968 election before he was assassinated. Lord’s father, a Republican, got him a job with the Republican National Committee that same year, and he attended the party’s Miami Beach convention that nominated Richard Nixon. At 17 years old, Lord’s job during that convention was to race around in an orange vest, providing the text of speeches to members of the media.

The 1968 convention was the first time he saw Ronald Reagan, for whom he’d later work in the White House. Lord last attended a convention as a member of the Pennsylvania delegation in 1988, when then-Vice President George H.W. Bush won the nomination.

The road back to the Republican convention unknowingly began for Lord after he praised Trump in a few columns. Lord’s June 2013 piece, “Never Ignore Donald Trump,” echoed the philosophy Lewandowski espoused during the Republican primary race.

“We use to have a saying in the Reagan White House: Let Reagan be Reagan,” he said. “Donald Trump, like Ronald Reagan, is an American Original. Let Donald Trump be Donald Trump.”

Trump surprised Lord with a phone call on Labor Day weekend of 2013. A couple of months later, Trump invited Lord to fly from New York to Washington. Trump was going to receive the T. Boone Pickens Entrepreneur Award from the American Spectator magazine, where Lord is a contributing editor. Lord trekked to New York and met Trump in his office. “We hit it off,” Lord said. “He’s terrific.”

When entering the presidential race in June 2015, Trump apparently wasn’t pleased with CNN’s commentators. He believed they were unfair to him and more supportive of his Republican rivals. So Trump, or a member of his campaign, passed along Lord’s name to CNN, as The Washington Post’s Erik Wemple reported last year.

“I didn’t know this,” Lord recalled. “I’m sitting at home in Pennsylvania typing my columns and taking care of mom and suddenly, literally in one day, I was on CNN four times, five times. Once on the phone. Once with Skype.” (He often appears by Skype, which allows him to remain in Harrisburg and take care of his mother.)

Lord received a contract initially through 2015. It was extended another year as it became clear Trump wasn’t going anywhere.

These days, Lord said he only hears periodically from Trump. He said the last time was in early June, after details of a call with campaign surrogates was leaked to the media. But it’s not as if Trump needs to personally call Lord to count on him to put the best spin, or deflection, on the media outrage of the moment.

Take this week’s plagiarism scandal, in which Melania Trump recited several lines taken from Michelle Obama’s speech at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Lord knows something about plagiarism involving political figures. In September 1987, Lord recognized then-presidential candidate Joe Biden using words he recognized from a Robert Kennedy speech that he’d played repeatedly as a kid during his youthful Democratic phase. He passed along the info to a young New York Times political reporter named Maureen Dowd, who noted Lord’s contribution in an article on a controversy over a separate instance of plagiarism that eventually ended Biden’s 1988 bid.

Though Lord didn’t defend plagiarism when it applied to Trump’s campaign, he downplayed the budding convention controversy in the wee hours Tuesday morning.

“You need to have a sense of perspective,” he said. “This is not Benghazi.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

My Best Friend Is 20 Years Older Than Me, Here’s What I’ve Learned

My best friend is a Filipino with kids as old as me.

It also doesn’t help that she’s female and I’m male.

Now pay attention. I want you to notice what you think about this. I want you to notice what your immediate assumptions are. Do you believe me? Are you not sure? Do you think I must be lying?

Most of the time society assumes the worst.

They think we MUST be in a relationship. We MUST be hiding it from absolutely everybody. But no matter how much dirt my friends or her friends try to dig out, they still come up empty-handed every time.

That’s because there’s nothing happening.

You know what we do? We do things that normal friends would. We sit and talk. We laugh about work. We confide and trust one another. We go out. The chemistry that everyone else sees is so easily mistaken for love, but that’s just because we know each other so well.

I can’t tell you how this happened. The stars aligned and for some reason we had the perfect amount of compatibility. But if you think about it you’ll see why we’re compatible. I’m 23 and I’m very much open to everything. I want to learn from the experience of everyone.

What better way to learn about life than to talk to someone twice my age from another country? And guess what? I’ve learned more than you can ever imagine. It’s the lessons that I’ve learned from this wonderful person that have shaped my decisions for the past year.

She told me one thing, and that was to stay single and enjoy life while I can. She got married when she was 21 and wished she could’ve done things over. I’m currently out in San Francisco, writing in my blog and travelling the United States. I owe it all to her.

The bigger point is that society is too often focused on the wrong things–like age, gender, race, and background. It’s for this reason that our growth as human beings becomes stunted. We only hang out with those our age who want to party and fall in love on a whim. Why not become friends with someone older? Why not learn about the implications of a divorce and marrying early and having children?

There’s a whole wealth of experience that we’re missing out on. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side. Many of my friends rushed to get married before they got to travel outside of their own state. I know from my experience with my best friend that this might not always be the best plan of action.

I learned so much from her.

I learned that being 40 doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun like you’re 21. I learned that being a single parent demands a departure from how you acted before a divorce. I learned patience. I learned that there’s a point where friends become family. I learned that Filipino people have the best hospitality.

My decision to commit social suicide by being seen with a woman twice my age in public paid dividends for me that I’ll continue to reap for years to come.

Friendships can be weird, but I’m convinced that it’s the most beautiful thing human beings are capable of creating. Don’t limit yourself because of what people may think. I say, go for it.

Florida Investigating 2 Possible Local Zika Virus Infections

Health officials said Thursday they were investigating two possible cases of locally acquired Zika virus in South Florida, although sexual transmission related to travel hadn’t been ruled out.

A patient in Miami-Dade County is an adult woman, according to a spokesman for the Florida Health Department. There were no details about the identity of a patient in nearby Broward County.

If either case is confirmed, it would be the first local Zika transmission by mosquitoes in the U.S. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the state Department of Health were jointly investigating to determine whether mosquitos in the areas are carrying the virus.

“Mosquitos have been trapped in the area of investigation and are being tested,” Mara Gambineri, a health department spokeswoman, told The Associated Press.

Officials urged residents in the affected areas to cooperate with requests for blood and urine samples so that the health department can determine if there are more people who have been infected. Zika virus symptoms include red eyes, rash, joint pain and fever, but people who are infected may also be asymptomatic.

Miami-Dade County leads the state in confirmed Zika cases, with 92, but all of those cases are travel-related.

The CDC predicted in January that there may be a few small, local outbreaks in the U.S. ― specifically in the southern tips of Florida and Texas. Both areas in the past had outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases, like dengue and chikungunya, which are transmitted by the same Aedes aegypti mosquito that carries Zika virus, and receive thousands of people traveling from places where Zika is spreading.

The CDC said Thursday that beginning Aug. 1, it would award a total of $ 60 million to states, cities and territories to fund efforts to prevent Zika virus from spreading. These Zika prevention tools include mosquito control and monitoring, more laboratory capacity for testing, and beefing up disease surveillance and investigation. In a statement announcing the funding, CDC Director Tom Frieden said he hoped Congress will vote to provide additional funds.

But as Vox pointed out last week, Congress just entered its summer holiday break without voting on $ 1.1 billion in funding for more Zika prevention measures. Experts predicted the consequences of that congressional inaction will include more babies born with microcephaly in the U.S.

Currently, 1,404 people have tested positive for Zika virus in the U.S. Of these, 400 are pregnant women. To date, all Zika virus cases in the U.S. are associated with travel to an affected area. Fifteen cases were sexually transmitted, and five people went on to develop Guillain-Barre syndrome, a neurological condition associated with with the virus.

Twelve babies have been born in the U.S. with birth defects caused by Zika virus, including microcephaly, calcium deposits in the brain, excess fluid in the brain cavity or abnormal eye development. Officials have counted six pregnancy losses with evidence of the Zika virus-caused birth defects

Zika virus is endemic in 50 countries and territories around the world.

Calm In Cleveland?

2016-07-20-1469045908-8780607-IMG_1808.jpg

By: Soraya Shockley

Outside the Quicken Loans Arena on Wednesday, Cleveland police officers closed in on a group of protesters wearing black shirts emblazoned with the words “Revolution Nothing Less” and burning an American flag. For a moment, it seemed like the protest scene at the Republican National Convention was about to get dramatic.

But after a few minutes, it was over.

At least so far, the RNC has been far from the powder keg of possible chaos, unrest, and violence that many around the country feared it might be. With only small protests and rallies of a few hundred people sprouting up over the past few days, the streets have remained largely peaceful.

Although verbal altercations have broken out between opposing protest groups, the number of arrests during the convention is still low. As of Tuesday night, only five arrests have been made total, which stands in stark contrast to the previously estimated 1,000 arrests per day for which the Cleveland Municipal Court had prepared.

The contrast between the security concerns going into the convention and how the convention has actually unfolded thus far is shockingly different. During the 18 months of preparation here, the fear was that the Cleveland convention could turn into a repeat of the 1968 Democratic National Convention which rocked the city of Chicago with mass riots. The reports the city of Cleveland released as to how they were spending their $ 50 million federal security grant did not help the perception that this convention could be calamitous as the spending was foreboding to say the least.

The city bought 2,000 sets of riot gear and batons, 24 sets of ballistic body armor, thousands of body cameras, and upped their original protest insurance from $ 10 million to $ 50 million. Cleveland also recruited thousands of police officers from around the country to bolster the department’s personnel from 1,500 to 4,000 police officers which does not even include the over 4,000 federal law enforcement officers who will be present during the extent of the convention. On top of that, Cuyahoga County freed up 200 beds in the county jail to accommodate the previously estimated 1,000 arrests per day.

So far, none of the anticipated turmoil has come to pass.

Most officers on the streets have been in light body armor and normal patrol blues, however there is noticeable heightened security in the form of Secret Service officers in flak jackets and K-9 units surrounding the arena. Still, there is no riot gear in sight. But what has been most striking is the tactics used by law enforcement to seemingly infuse calm into a tense situation.

2016-07-20-1469045987-1980237-IMG_1605.jpg

One of the interesting tactics is how police are utilizing horses, bikes, and bodies. Prior to the convention, Cleveland bought 300 new bikes and helmets at a cost of almost $ 400,000 and increased their mounted unit to 30 horses. From observation, the police have been using a combination of horses, bikes, and on foot police to peacefully breakup rowdier groups and maintain order. For example,  when large gatherings have devolved into arguments, my fellow reporters and I have seen cadres of police on bicycles ride straight through crowds, quickly separating agitators.

The story here in Cleveland has become less about the police being armed to the teeth and ready for mayhem and more about the intelligent policing that has kept the city relatively quiet.

However, it is important to note that the full extent of Cleveland’s preparedness has yet to be tested as protests have been dramatically smaller than expected. Thursday is the last day of the convention, the last chance for a major protest to occur, and the last opportunity for law enforcement to prove whether they are actually creating the calm.

Stop The Violence And Hate: 5 Things You Can Do Now

2016-07-20-1469048933-7840592-sNEIGHBORHOODsmall.jpg

I am sure everyone reading this can agree on one thing — the violence and hate needs to stop, and it needs to stop now. I am talking about the daily violence and hatred that is going on around the world. The fire of violence is consuming us, and it seems to be a raging fire. The flames are being fanned every day, on TV, in the news, on social media, on talk radio, at the dinner tables, in the offices down the street.

The violence is committed in the name of justice, in the name of an ideology, in the name of enforcement, for revenge or to right a wrong. I am peaceful man and I will confess it hurts my heart to see such death and hated. We have so much innocent blood being shed for… what?

As novelist and humanitarian Wendall Berry once said, “Violence breeds violence. Acts of violence committed in justice or in affirmation of rights or in defense of peace do not end violence. They prepare and justify its continuation.”

So what can you do to stop it? You are just one person right? What can one person do? I think there are simple things we can all do to help stop it.

1. Start with you. As the old song said: “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.” If there is to be peace, then you need to start with you by not supporting, condoning, endorsing violence in any way. I see messages on social media that say, “Well I am glad they got justice — they deserved it!” They are endorsing the murder of another human being for justice. This is not justice, it just murder. So even if you don’t commit violence yourself, don’t be the one who feeds the beast in the form of encouragement. Don’t support this kind of behavior anywhere. Make a daily commitment (not just lip service) to being kind and loving to everyone you meet and interact with. Show others in the world that kindness comes on all colors shapes and sizes. It is not going to be easy — nothing worthwhile ever is — and you are going to have days when you are tired and fail. But the next day, get dust yourself off and try again.

2. Start with your family. Teach your children to be kind, to be aware of other people feelings, to give back and to take care of others. Teach them empathy and caring and make it one of your family values. The way to change a culture is first and foremost at home first. Teach them to respect all people or all races creeds and colors. As a parent, show them through your actions how to be a kind soul. Don’t allow them to talk bad about others or to express hate. Let them know that is not how kind people act and that it is not acceptable behavior. As Nelson Mandela once said, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for loves comes more naturally to the human heart than the opposite.”

3. Start with your neighborhood. Do you know your neighbors? Reach out to them and get to know them. Be bold and knock on their door and say hi. Tell them as neighbors you need to stick together. Have a block party and get to know one another. Let them know you have their back. Take initiative and form a community association. Talk to each other. Have a community of connection and kindness. Our nation is a nation, but it is really made up of one neighborhood, and many neighborhoods make up a town, and many towns make up a state. Many states create a nation. You can’t change a nation but you can change your little pocket of the world, by creating and spreading peace and kindness in your neighborhood.

4. Start to volunteer. There are lots or people in the world that need care and help. When someone volunteers their time and energy to help someone else — hearts are healed and hatred dissipates. It’s hard to hate when you see people cares about you. I have done volunteer work with children, and I have seen the transformation power of what love can do to heal.

5. Start to listen. We need to stop being so polarized — no one wants to listen to anyone who doesn’t agree with them. In Washington DC, politicians just don’t listen to anyone on the other side of the aisle. We must start listening to other people with an open mind and trying to understand their world, their perspective. As Tennessee Williams once said, “I think hate is a feeling that can only exist where there is no understanding.”

I am asking you today in reading this to commit to being a bright and shining well of peace, good will and kindness. Let the cool and deep water of that well extinguish the flames of violence and hate.

Walmart Unveils New Lines Of Ugly Apples And Potatoes

Walmart has started to see the beauty in ugly produce.

The nation’s largest grocer on Tuesday announced a new initiative to sell “ugly” apples in 300 Florida stores, according to a blog from the company. Beginning in May, the company also started selling misshapen potatoes in and around Texas that would have otherwise been wasted.

These announcements come three weeks after The Huffington Post launched its Reclaim campaign to spotlight the issue of food waste. Part of our effort targeted Walmart in the hopes of getting the chain to stock its shelves with a variety of imperfect fruits and vegetables across its massive network of stores.

Up to 40 percent of food in the U.S. goes uneaten, according to a study from the Natural Resources Defense Council. Some of the food is composted or turned into animal feed, but most of it winds up in landfills, according to the organization. A significant contributor to the problem is grocery chains rejecting produce because it does not meet standards for ideal size, shape or appearance, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.

Walmart’s new moves are its first initiatives to sell produce specifically branded as ugly or imperfect on its packaging in the U.S, Walmart spokesperson John Forrest Ales told HuffPost.

“What’s different now is that we’re having potatoes and apples of this grade on the shelf with the branding,” Ales said. “This is the first time the suppliers have come up with brands that are related to selling ugly produce.”

But activists say the effort represents only a fraction of the total amount of cosmetically imperfect produce rejected by grocery stores.

“While this is another good step, it’s still just a couple items,” food waste activist Jordan Figueiredo told The Huffington Post via email.

What activists are looking for, according to Figueiredo, is a large-scale program selling all types of ‘ugly’ produce ― too small, too large, misshapen, off-color ― derived from the “massive amount of produce” going to waste on farms due to cosmetic standards. They point to what Walmart has done in the U.K., with its Wonky Veg Box, as a good example.

Ales says Walmart has been selling “so-called ugly produce” for years ― putting imperfectly sized avocados and corn, or over-ripe Roma tomatoes, on shelves. He also said a certain amount of sales of over- or under-sized produce is “pretty common across the grocery industry.”

But food activists say they are looking for more radical changes from major grocery chains, such as large-scale programs to sell ugly produce and educate customers.

In the U.S., as much as 30 percent of all apples and pears grown “don’t make the cut” for cosmetic reasons, according to Walmart’s blog.

A recent study from the Guardian paints even starker numbers: half of all produce grown in the U.S. may be discarded because it’s bruised, misshapen, oddly sized or has some other non-threatening deformity.

Walmart’s new initiatives will make some strides against food waste by bringing potatoes that are “less than perfect” to more than 400 stores across Texas and nearby states, and “ugly apples” to around 300 stores in Florida.

Both items will be sold to customers in bundles at a lower price per pound than traditional potatoes or apples would be, according to Ales.

While Walmart’s two new initiatives are a step in the right direction, both activists and consumers say they want to see more.

On Wednesday, Figueiredo hand-delivered a petition to Walmart with more than 143,000 signatures, demanding that the grocery chain do more to combat the country’s food waste crisis.

“If produce fails to make the grade for size, shape, or color, retailers deem it ‘ugly’ and refuse to sell it in their stores,” the petition reads. “Tell [Walmart] to add the ‘uglies’ to their store aisles so you can save money, fight hunger and help the environment all in one.”

Walmart’s stores in the United Kingdom have made more progress than those in the U.S. to sell ugly produce.

Asda, Walmart’s U.K. grocery chain, began selling boxes of “wonky” vegetables earlier this year, for about 30 percent off regular prices. The program proved so successful, the company expanded the offer from 250 to 550 stores in March.

Now activists in the U.S. are hoping Walmart will do the same in the same here, selling ugly vegetables in its more than 5,000 stores nationwide.

“[Walmart’s ugly potatoes and apples] are also weather-blemished,” said Figueiredo, “which is not consistently happening like most ‘ugly’ produce is: Weather blemished is a one-off thing that happens here and there.”

Ales said the ability to sell ugly produce isn’t entirely in Walmart’s hands, as the amount of ugly produce growers have available can be dependent on external factors like the weather.

There are a number of factors that impact whether a harvest yields so-called ‘ugly’ produce, including Mother Nature,” Ales said. “When this type of produce is available, we look for ways to provide value for our customers and a return for growers.”

But Ales says Walmart has no national plans to sell ugly produce in the U.S:

“We don’t have any current nationwide plans at this time,” Ales told HuffPost. “We do not have specific goals for ugly produce. We’re watching ASDA closely, we brought these two initiatives forward and are continuing to look at new possibilities. There’s always more we can be doing.”

Goodbye Roger Ailes, and Thanks for the Donald

2016-07-20-1468974160-4567687-foxnews.png

When a public figure is deposed in some way, be it beaten in an election, or in the case of Roger Ailes, forcibly retired, there is a natural human tendency toward sympathy.

Let’s not do that for Roger Ailes. As we wait for official confirmation of what his press release and parachute will look like, let us remember Roger Ailes for what he truly was – and wasn’t. Though some will call him a “newsman,” Ailes was nothing of the sort. Roger Ailes was a ruthless propagandist whose legacy is being felt today in the ascendance of Donald Trump and the no-holds barred bigotry, lies and fear mongering that passes for his political platform.

For years, he got away with this with censure by hiding behind the label of news and the laughable “fair and balanced” slogan. Twelve years ago, before we made OUTFOXED, even the Democrats were going to allow Fox to broadcast one of the presidential debates, on the theory that it was a legitimate news outlet.

OUTFOXED proved otherwise. The film detailed how we uncovered memos from Ailes to his anchors, telling them how to frame their delivery of “news,” to legitimize the most scurrilous of rumors – to stick the weak disclaimer “some people say …” before ridiculous claims that, for example, then-Senator John Kerry was French.

When I interviewed former Fox employees for the film I disguised their faces and voices because they feared repercussions. And yes, I did learn of a toxic atmosphere of sexual harassment, but did not find anyone who was willing to talk about it publicly.

A lot has changed since the film came out. Any pretense of fair and balanced – of being a real news organization – has evaporated. Journalists, pundits, elected officials, political parties, have given up on the claim that it was just a few biased commentators but overall Fox was a news station and instead recognized that Fox is as much a part of the Republican party as the elephant logo. Finally, a few brave women felt they could come forward and speak out against the boss’ repulsive behavior.

That’s the good news. That bad news is that the damage has been done. We have a generation of voters now who know exactly where to go to have their deepest resentments stroked, their worst instincts catered to and their burning need to blame someone directed. They have a broadcast home where they feel the warm embrace of coded racism. It has been so long since they exercised the skepticism muscle that it has atrophied entirely. They are willing to believe what they are told so long as it reinforces their own sense of something vague being wrong and someone else, also vague, being at fault.

This is where Donald Trump the Politician was born, and raised.

So I sincerely congratulate and thank the women who were willing to take a stand against Ailes and the Murdoch brothers for seeing the light – words I am shocked by even as I write them.

May they use this opportunity to make other substantive changes, to reshape their station into a vehicle for real democratic debate and for actual news coverage. May the actual facts matter, once again, on all our networks. It’s a long shot, of course, but a person’s got to dream.

To celebrate the end of Roger Ailes’ career, watch OUTFOXED for free here. It’s free and it’s timely.

How To Collaborate Like Todd Snyder, Rising King Of American Menswear

He’s the once and future king of American menswear. But unless you’re obsessed with Instagram’s growing brotherhood of style bloggers who wear his clothes, you might not know Todd Snyder’s name today ― a fact that he’s OK with (for now) and he’ll be the first to admit that he’s not an American household name … yet.

But after designing outerwear at Polo Ralph Lauren, working as the director of menswear at The Gap and then as senior vice president of menswear at J.Crew (where he launched the Ludlow suit and its NYC-destination menswear shop The Liquor Store), he left J.Crew to launch his eponymous label. Snyder has been “The Next Big Thing” for so long that it feels like Snyder (a Dutch surname that, as it happens, means “tailor”) is finally getting the respect, attention and success that he deserves.

In 2012, Snyder, who cites military, Savile Row and classic American style as big inspiration, was GQ’s Best New Designer in America. A year later, he was a finalist for the Council of Fashion Designers of America/Vogue Fashion Fund. Last year, American Eagle announced (to some surprise) that it had acquired the Todd Snyder label, as well as Snyder’s lesser-known brand, Tailgate, for $ 11 million.

He told HuffPost that he plans to open a Todd Snyder shop in Manhattan (his first brick and mortar in the US) that will feature, among other things, a barber shop, tailor shop and bar, in the hopes of bringing the success he’s found in his Japanese locations to his home base in the U.S.

A big reason for all of this success, though slow-simmering, is due to his ability to recognize partnerships where others would see competition. Snyder has designed product with brands that share both aesthetics and customers: PF Flyers, Champion, Superior bags, Moscot and Cole Haan. His most recent collaboration with Timex sold out within its first day.

We spoke with Snyder in his Manhattan studio to learn about why he collaborates so much when he could just do for himself what other brands are doing, to learn his secrets.

Associate Yourself With Those Who Inspire You.

“What attracted me to Timex was the heritage,” Snyder said. “When I think of iconic American brands, it’s Levis, Champion, Timex, Redwing. Those are the things that, to me are like OK, that says they’ve stood the test of time. They’re still doing today what they were doing when they started, which is making really great quality design.”

Your Competitor Can Become Your Mentor.

“It’s also the ability to sit across from [a brand like] Timex, where within the entire company, there’s a lot of really smart people. They’re talking about marketing and different ways of getting the word out and I’m like, how do you do that? They deal with mega companies, the Targets of the world. Everybody. To be able to sit across from people in that company who have this knowledge is, for me, so exciting because then I learn from that.”

Respect Your Partner’s History. It’s Why You Want To Work With Them.

“To be able to work with companies like those is a dream come true, but my approach is to go in with respect to the heritage and what they’ve built,” Snyder said. “I don’t want to change it, I just want to add a little twist to it and really pay tribute to it, as opposed to starting over. Because to me, that’s not what it’s about ― it’s about taking something they’ve done and adding slight twists to it so it kind of makes it my own, but at the same time doesn’t destroy what they’ve started. And having that appreciation goes a long way so they can trust me. It’s a trust factor.”

Know That Ultimately, What You Make Together Is More Meaningful Than The Sum Of Its Parts.

I don’t think I could ever make a watch better than Timex, and if I did I don’t think it would have as much meaning as something like this,” Snyder said. “Because that’s what people appreciate; you fall in love with the design and you might not know that it was made originally in 1970 but you start to read the backstory on the watch and how it was started and the story about how it was designed, and you fall in love with that story as well. And I think that’s what guys really appreciate. There’s more substance to it rather than just a piece of metal that’s on your wrist.”

Florida Zika Case Could Be First Local Transmission In U.S.

(Reuters) – Florida health officials said on Tuesday they are investigating a case of Zika virus infection that does not appear to have stemmed from travel to another region with an outbreak.

The statement from the Florida Department of Health did not specify whether the Zika case was believed to have been transmitted via mosquito bite, sexual contact or other means.

The department said the case was reported in Miami-Dade County and that it is working with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on an epidemiological study.

The department also reiterated guidance to Florida residents on protecting themselves from mosquitoes that may carry the virus.

“Zika prevention kits and repellant will be available for pickup … and distributed in the area under investigation,” the health department said in a statement. “Mosquito control has already conducted reduction and prevention activities in the area of investigation.”

Zika, which can cause a rare birth defect and other neurological conditions, has spread rapidly through the Americas. A small number of cases of Zika transmitted between sexual partners have also been documented.

There has yet to be a case of local transmission by mosquitoes in the continental United States, though more than 1,300 people in the country have reported infections after traveling to a Zika outbreak area.

U.S. officials have predicted local outbreaks to begin as the weather warms, particularly in southern states such as Florida and Texas.

How We Can Come Together When Our World Is Falling Apart

2016-07-18-1468850246-141222-BWWD30SFX0.jpg

Here we are, a week later with more images of terror and broken bodies and weeping after Friday’s attack in Nice. And just as I was about to publish this post yesterday, I learned about the policemen shot in Baton Rouge. Then shortly after, the protests in Cleveland.

It seems we must decide for ourselves if we will become who the media says we are becoming. Or if we won’t. If we will prove them wrong and become something new up and out of all these ashes.

I want to be a new. Do you?

But it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It doesn’t happen when we’re huddled up on ” a side” or hiding for fear of it all. It happens in relationship. We’ve got to come together when the world seems to be falling apart.

That’s a pleasant thing to say and a harder thing to do. Not because we don’t want to, but mostly because we don’t know how. Sure we can cling to those who are like us and those who agree with us. But what about those who think, act, and look differently than we do?

How do we come together for real, rather than just throwing words around?

Last week, I wrote about how we must humble ourselves and listen to one another. But what does that look like in action?

First, it looks like being honest about our own brokenness. Admitting our fears and hang-ups. Opening the hatch on the junk we tend to keep locked in the trunk.

The first step is being humble and admitting to ourselves and to God,

I am broken too. I do things that hurt others and hurt myself. I cannot point to the specks in other people’s eyes until I acknowledge and ask for help removing the 2×4’s in my own.

Because the 2×4’s in our own eyes are often the things blurring and skewing our vision. They keep us from seeing clearly what is really going on in the lives of others.

Second, it looks like getting to know the 2×4’s in our own eyes.

We tend to think of our enemies as outside of us, but the most dangerous one can hide within. The 2×4’s in our own eyes are often set with a strong sense of pride, which makes them hard to see.

We can all use help finding these any day of the week. So, try this…

Consider these statements not only for the inciters and perpetrators of hate and terror, but also for people in your community, your neighborhood, your office, and even your home.

  • He/she does/says ____________, and I would never…
  • He/she is absolutely wrong about _________ because…
  • He/she will is never willing to see my side of_______________.
  • He/she doesn’t deserve my respect because ______________.

Am I saying there are not absolutes in this world when it comes to moral conditions?

Not at all.

But I am saying that judgment is to come not from us but from Elsewhere. And it’s not made based on appearance or what we think we see, it’s evaluated by what’s in a heart.  And you and I can’t see what’s in a heart, what experiences make a heart beat the way it does.

So third, we must admit we may not have the whole story.

That there is absolutely more to the other person than meets the eye.

And fourth, we need to learn something about him or her.

We need to lay our 2×4’s down, so we can make eye contact, really see the person with an open mind. Whether the person is warm to our effort or not, we won’t be offended (because remember, we are operating without 2×4’s). We can simply say, “I’m sorry we’re in this spot. How can we figure this out together?” Then, listen.

This is where healing starts in our families, our neighborhoods, and our nation. With acknowledgement of our own brokenness and 2×4’s… then the healing words, “Let’s help each other.”

Because we are exponentially more together than we can ever be apart.

If we really want to do something about the mess we’re in, then we can apply this process to one person who rubs us wrong this week.

Shall we do it together?

If you are struggling with anxiety and fear in the midst of all this upheaval, here is a free guided meditation for you.

10 Lies We Tell Ourselves That Keep Us From Living Happy And SMART

2016-07-18-1468863190-5256983-limitorliberate.jpegI do my best with my writing here and on my blog SMART Living 365 to stay away from politics. That’s not because I don’t have an opinion, but my intention is to instead inspire and encourage us all to think and form our own opinions from a space of awareness, compassion and personal responsibility. With that said, it occurred to me that much of the divisiveness we see and hear these days originates in some fundamental lies that we may be telling ourselves. Those lies or untruths are quite common and perhaps by taking the time to shine some light on them, we just might find that we have taken a wrong turn somewhere along the line. Here then, are 10 falsehoods some people tell themselves that keep them from being happy and SMART.

1) We can’t do anything about it, so why bother?
I’ve heard this phrase so many times in the last couple of weeks that it might be epidemic. Obviously, many people are feeling powerless in the face of politics or other issues facing our world today. And while the truth is that most of us are happy and doing reasonably well, we still tend to feel that we have little or no control over the events of the world, so why bother to do anything but complain about them?

Why indeed? If you take the time to go back and read some of my other writing here or on SMART Living you’ll see why. I continue to share ideas proving that each of us can affect our futures in positive ways–even if it is only by our attitudes. By believing that we are powerless in the face of anything we are building up a belief that says we have little or no power. That makes us a victim, and that’s not SMART!

Instead, by remembering that we can always do what we can, where we are, with what we have, we tell our psyche we are a co-creator of our world. Even when we acknowledge that some things are beyond our control, it’s SMART to remember that we can always choose what we think and how we react.

2) There are big problems in this world, and someone else needs to fix them now! This lie is slightly different than the first because this one assumes that anything bad that happens is someone else’s fault. Whether you believe it is the President, the Congress, certain religious groups, other races, or just the devil, we all tend to want to locate a “bad guy” and make them responsible. We equally prefer to find someone else to put in charge to take care of that bad guy. Sorry! The blame game is never a SMART approach. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for, and until we decide to take action, things will likely stay the same.

3) I need a big house, a bunch of stuff, and lots of money to be safe and happy. This lie exists deeply beneath the American culture as a solution to most of the problems people believe they have. Money and “more” can fix everything right? Wrong! Research continues to prove that once people have their basic needs met, money or more doesn’t change anything. And sometimes the more you get, the more you feel like you have to protect it. Until we accept that happiness and security are an inside job, we will never find the peace we are seeking.

4) If my loved ones just listened to me and did what I told them, everything would work out better. Wouldn’t that be nice? Unfortunately, I don’t know anyone who can get this to happen even most of the time. Do you? Just like each of us, everyone is a unique and special individual with his or her own life to live. Why should anyone sacrifice their life to please us and do what we say? Isn’t that the definition of a slave? Besides, can we ever say we know better than anyone else what is best for another? Far SMARTer to let others live their lives and make their own way. Not only will they be much happier, but so will we.

5) You can’t trust other people, and the world is a scary place. The root of this lie is fear, plain and simple. Years ago Albert Einstein said, “The most important decision we make is whether we live in a friendly or hostile universe.'” Clearly, if you are worried that the Universe is a scary place and out-to-get-you, then just about everything you say and do will be in response to that belief. The good news is that the opposite is also equally true.

6) If I can just get everything under control, then my loved ones and I will be safe, and everything will be okay. This lie falls directly behind the one above. When you come from a fear that things are scary, we can devote an entire lifetime trying to control every little detail around us. Unfortunately, about the only thing we have the ability to control much of the time is our thoughts and actions. Maybe instead of trying to control external events so tightly, we do as Abraham-Hicks suggests and learn to live as though, “Everything is always working out for me.”

7) There’s not enough money, food, water, or good to go around, so I have to get mine first! Lots of people and organizations have spent a lifetime promoting this idea to themselves and each other. By getting us to believe in a scarcity mentality, they convince us that we must fight and defend our good whenever we manage to find it. We also tend to believe that others are hell-bent on taking our good from us. Naturally, that makes us fearful and defensive about everything and everybody. It also suggests that we can never have enough, or be “enough.” Clearly, not a pleasant way to live. Instead, we have the option of believing in a world where there is plenty of good to go around and that we are basically good and “enough” just as we are.

8) Anyone who doesn’t look, act, or think like me is cause for concern and need to be watched and controlled. If we believe we live in a scary world, then it’s also easy to believe that anyone who is different from us is potentially a problem. That makes us want to enact laws to control them, build fences to keep them out, and if that doesn’t work, to eliminate them all together. I was recently speaking to a man I’ve known for years who is both kind and generous. He stunned me when he said, “If we didn’t have a military the barbarians would be storming the gates of our country.” He was deadly serious. Sadly, as long we see other beings with such a “them” mentality, we will never feel safe and will live in fear.

9) If I admit I’m fundamentally wrong about something, my world would collapse, and all hell would break loose. The truth is, none of us like to be wrong and by far prefer to be right over being happy, regardless of what we say. Naturally, that keeps us stuck in mindsets that are not only unhappy, but sometimes destructive to other people, the world around us, and ourselves. Far better to see clearly, honestly, and change our mind when necessary.

10) Change and uncertainty are scary. Behind so much fear is a deep mistrust of the unknown. Even when people come up with the most bizarre explanations and beliefs, many still insist on hanging on to them when the truth is staring them in the face. So rather than being flexible, willing to learn and to adapt, people clutch on with their fingernails as though being dragged into hell. The solution is simple but not always easy. Learn to embrace change and dance with uncertainty.

Something I read years ago has gradually seeped into my consciousness. That saying is, “The Universe always says “Yes!” to us. If you believe all of the lies above then the Universe just says “Yes!” And there is then nothing anyone can say or do that will change your mind. If you believe something else, the benevolent affirmative power of the Universe says “Yes!” to that as well. Much as some people want to believe that only one final truth or reality exists, their conviction is just proof that the Universe is saying “Yes!” to how they choose to believe.

As usual, I have no final answer for anyone else, but I am fairly convinced that the SMART perspective is to always remember that we have a choice about what we believe–and then accept our part in the world we’ve helped to create.

He’s Not A White Knight — He’s A Human Being

Society says:

Men are not allowed to be weak.

Men do not feel as deeply as women.

Men do not have emotional attachments to sex.

Men are fearless and courageous.

Men are here to save the day, the damsel and the world!

Today I am throwing my hands up in the air and saying e-nough!

With thoughts and stigmas like this, relationships are doomed before they even start.
It’s time we put an end to the emotional imprisonment of men.

Unless we stop seeing our men through a distorted lens, we will always feel disappointed and as if he’s not enough.

Ladies, he’s not a White Knight, he’s a human being. He’s not perfect; he’s flawed. Just as we are.

As much as the big screen likes to repeatedly demonstrate the amazing, enlightened, self-aware man rescuing the damsel at just the perfect moment, it’s a rare occurrence in real life.

For Pete’s sake, Ladies, we have to stop this nonsensical belief once and for all.

Gender Differences – Real or Not Real

There are very few gender lines I allow into my beliefs and the ones I do are mostly hormone or physiologically based. There are many books out there claiming males and females are very different and we must understand one another in order to get along.

I am publicly willing to stand in disagreement with this for many reasons. (But that’s for another blog)

At the core level, the absolute deepest level of our being, we are souls. Souls that are a magnificent balance of masculine and feminine energies. Souls that came here to experience a physical body and the material world. At our very core, we are Spirit in human form.

All of us.

We may have chosen to experience the form of male or female, but our purpose for being here is the same. We are no different from one another. We are here to learn and grow closer to our Higher Self (God-Self) while existing in human form.

When we understand we are dealing with another soul housed in a male body, we can acquire a deeper understanding and appreciation for our partner that has the capacity to heal our fractured relationships.

Giving What You Are Expecting

I absolutely believe if we lose the White Knight stigma we’ve attached to our men and start looking at them from a new perspective, relationships en masse would dramatically improve!

2016-07-18-1468874361-2893789-whiteknight.PNG

Although I cannot speak to all relationships as there are too many individual and unique dynamics in play, I believe those of you who were drawn to this article possess the ability to alter the state of your partnerships by viewing your man through a clearer lens.

You can start by asking yourself this question:

Am I giving to my man what I am expecting from him?

If I’ve seen it once, I’ve seen it a hundred times. Women expecting to be nurtured, supported, caressed, complimented, made passionate love to (and the list goes on), but they’re unwilling to do those things for their man.

Somewhere along the way they chose to believe it’s the man’s job, not theirs.

By putting such lopsided expectations are on our men, we create an atmosphere of perpetual lack and resentment.

Frankly, you are putting the entire relationship in the hands of your partner and by golly, that’s an incredible burden for anyone to bear!

Ladies, he can show up for you. He can hold your hand. He can love you and respect you, but you have an equally important role in the relationship’s success.

No one person can nurture the relationship alone. Happy, healthy relationships require both parties equally contributing to the healing and becoming of their partner.

What He’s Not Saying

In my past, I had the belief that the man was supposed to fill the cracks of my broken heart. That my heart was the only fragile one in the room and the right man would know exactly how to make me feel safe and loved.

I was left disappointed every time until one day I looked deeper into the eyes and soul of the person I was putting my expectations on.

I discovered he was just as afraid as I was and his heart equally as fragile.

My entire life changed when I began to view men from a different perspective.

I started to see what the men in my life were not saying rather than what they were saying. I saw their fears and I heard their inaudible cries for love. I didn’t tell them what I saw, I simply began approaching interactions with them differently – with love rather than expectation.

The responses that came were remarkable. Softness replaced hardness. Kindness replaced anger. Gratitude replaced bitterness. Appreciation replaced expectation.

It was a miracle.

2016-07-18-1468873875-7792811-whiteknight2.PNG

Your man needs your love, attention, support, understanding and encouragement as much as you need it from him. He has his own store of false beliefs and fears just as you do. He is not exempt from the human experience just because he sports a penis.

Most men won’t display their needs openly as they have been taught not to.

It’s up to us to know that as human beings men experience the same emotions, fears and weaknesses as women do. If we want to experience the wonders of a reciprocally loving relationship, we need to step up and do our part.

And with this beautiful shift in perception, you will become the person he’s always needed in his life – his soft place to fall. You will become his trusted companion, the one who knows and understands him like no other.

2016-07-18-1468873812-2537940-whiteknight1.PNG

You will be the reason he becomes all that he is meant to be and the reason he will protect his kingdom at all costs.

He will become the White Knight you’ve always dreamed about simply because you love him for all that he is.

A Healing Meditation for Injuries

By Yoga Journal

FNL

The best (if dreaded) remedy for battling a yoga injury? Rest. My left arm is in need of a major vacation from Chaturanga, but my mind is highly displeased by the verdict. I decided to appease my cranky brain with a simple visual and mantra-oriented meditation. I created this meditation while sitting outside overlooking a beautiful lake in upstate New York last week. The slow pace combined with the glory of nature reminded me to use them as healing tools in my visualization practice. I’ve been using this simple mediation since to encourage my mind to rest and my body to recharge, so it can come back strong.

A Mantra Meditation

Take a comfortable seat.

A quiet space outdoors in nature would be ideal if available, but even a cracked window or sitting on a balcony should do the trick.

Start by cultivating ujjayi breath.

Keep it simple and soft. Close your eyes and let your internal vision rest between your eyes on your brow. Set the scene for about one minute.

Introduce the mantra.

As you inhale, think to yourself: I am strong. As you exhale: I am healing. Continue this mantra for another minute.

Visualize.

Next, as you say to yourself, I am strong, envision an outer casing shattering off your body. This is the residual buildup of opinions, experiences, hurtful words, or anything that may have added to your duress. See it combust into a million pieces and flutter off into the wind.

As you use the statement, I am healing, envision a flowering vine wrapping around the ailment of on your body. This gorgeous plant is drawing up healing energy deep from within it’s roots and transporting it toward you. See the plant blossom as it makes contact with your skin, because you are ripe with healing and fertile with potential.

Continue this combination of mantra and visualization for at least 5 minutes or up to as long as you’d like. Once you’re done with the mantra, sit in silence for a few minutes more.

Why Trump’s ‘Pivot’ Is Fake And Laughably Late At That

The chairman of the Republican Party says that Donald Trump is “pivoting” ― in other words, that he is re-inventing himself as a thoughtful, responsible political leader Americans would feel comfortable putting in the Oval Office.

It’s not clear whether such a transformation is underway ― or why, if it is, voters should give Trump another chance.

Appearing on television shows Sunday, a day before the official start of the Republican convention in Cleveland, GOP Chairman Reince Priebus vowed that Trump was changing his ways. On ABC’s “This Week,” Priebus told host George Stephanopoulos that he’d already detected a shift in the substance and tone in Trump’s rhetoric. “He knows the pivot is important,” Priebus said. “He has been better and I think he’s going to be great moving forward.” It was one of four times in the show that Priebus used the word “pivot.”

On CNN’s “State of the Union,” Priebus made the same point to host Jake Tapper and cited, as an example, Trump’s decision to modify what’s arguably been his most controversial proposal of this campaign cycle: A ban on all Muslims from entering the U.S. According to Priebus, Trump has abandoned that position and would now target only those countries with records of sponsoring or training terrorists.

“He has pivoted to this position,” Priebus said, again invoking the “p-word.” He went on to explain that Trump’s position “is not a religious test. It is a ban on immigration from countries that harbor or train terrorists ”

Is this wishful thinking? Quite possibly. At times, Trump has talked about Muslim immigration in ways that suggested he was tweaking his position. But his spokespeople have always denied that he’s changing his position and, as of Sunday afternoon, his campaign website still carried the original policy statement from last fall proposing an all-out ban.

It’s true that Trump has flashed a less bombastic, more serious persona on a few recent occasions. His initial reaction to the killings in Dallas, for example, were relatively measured. But within the last 36 hours he has given a rambling and weirdly self-centered speech to announce Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate and then, during an interview on CBS “60 Minutes,” criticized “Crooked Hillary” (Clinton) right after Pence, seated next to him, had explained why campaigns need to be less negative than they are.

In short, he’s still the same old Trump. The guy can’t seem to help himself.

Of course, pivoting isn’t an all-or-nothing thing. Trump could execute what the political pros might describe as a “half-pivot” ― showing just a little more discipline, and being just a little less nasty, while continuing to run a campaign based on personal attacks and divisive rhetoric. Trump will have an opportunity to show that ability on Thursday night, when he addresses the full Republican convention. As Priebus noted in his interviews, Ronald Reagan seemed to win over skeptical voters in 1980 with a strong convention speech (and, later, strong debate performances).

“I think Thursday night, Donald Trump on the stage delivering a great speech is going to go a long way for Donald Trump in pivoting to the general,” Priebus said.

Maybe so. But even if Trump decides to act in a way that voters would interpret as more presidential, he still has to answer for his behavior and rhetoric of the last 13 months, while he was running for president ― and for quite a few things he said and did before that.

Whatever he says or does going forward, Trump must answer for his conduct over the last 13 months.

Imagine Trump never said another derogatory thing about women. He’d still be the guy who lashed out at Fox News host Megyn Kelly by suggesting she asked tough questions because of her menstrual cycle. And he’d still be the guy who has at various points called individual women “pig,” “dog” and “fat slob.”

Imagine that Trump never uttered an unkind words about Latinos. He’d still be the guy who claimed that Mexico was sending rapists across the border, who thought he could court Hispanic voters by eating a taco salad on Cinco de Mayo and who questioned the integrity of a judge presiding over an anti-Trump lawsuit because of the judge’s Mexican heritage.

Or think about the Muslim ban, about which Trump may or may not be having some second thoughts. Whatever nuances Trump decides to introduce to the proposal, and whatever retractions he decides to issue, Trump would still be the guy who said he would support a registry of Muslims, who claimed to see thousands of Arab immigrants celebrating after the Sept. 11 attacks and who repeated a fable about an American general dipping bullets in pig’s blood before executing Muslim prisoners.

Trump would also be the guy who spent a year standing by the Muslim ban despite fellow Republicans’ statements saying such a proposal would be both “offensive and unconstitutional,” as Pence put it. And Trump would still be the guy who was calling for a Muslim ban despite reports that it might be spawning hate crimes against Muslim Americans ― and despite warnings, from a bipartisan chorus of national security experts, that a ban would give ISIS and other Islamic extremists precisely the kind of Islam-versus-the-West war they desire and desperately need as a recruiting tool.

For more than a year, Trump thought this kind of rhetoric and behavior was appropriate. That ought to tell voters everything they need to know about his qualifications to be president ― no matter what they see on Thursday and through the rest of the campaign.

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

Understanding: Wants Vs. Needs

2016-07-15-1468611389-7532558-shutterstock_449670994.jpg

Wants vs Needs

How often do we create mountains out of molehills? We should start by defining our needs and our wants. What qualifies as a need? What is a want?

A need is something you have to do. A want is something you would like to do. I often confuse them. There are days when I take my needs for granted and sacrifice them at the expense of my wants.

Let me start with some examples:

My medications
My bedtime
Work projects
Parenting time with my kids
Paying my bills
Weeding my property
Exercising
Following my food plan

… The list goes on.

I used to think all of these were needs. And as you can see by the list, they don’t all seem reasonable to complete in a day. As a result, I would improperly prioritize those items I felt would yield the largest gain or results.

I focused on growing my business, because if my business was successful, everything else would fall into order behind it (or so I thought). But I didn’t realize that neglecting myself and my actual needs was a serious issue. I believed I was too busy to get the rest of the list done.

Since embracing mindful thinking, I have been able to accomplish everything on the list, and more. I realized that the more time I found for myself, the more time I had for everyone else.

Waking up this morning, I immediately centered myself with gratitude, spirituality and mindfulness. This week, I took my medications daily and made sure that my bedtime was consistent. Everything else today is a by-product of those good behaviors and habits. I naturally had time and energy to follow my food plan. (I even found time to walk a few miles while working and ride my exercise bike today.)

After that, I was able to spend time with my kids: watching their shows before and after dinner, reading to them before they went to sleep, and hearing something good from each of them regarding their days.

The one thing I didn’t have time for today was beating myself up or playing the victim. Was I perfect in my quest today? No. My inboxes aren’t empty. Yet. They are smaller than they were yesterday and I found acceptance about not requiring them to be empty each and every day.

The reality is that an empty inbox is a want – not a need. Realizing this allowed me to focus more of my time on my needs and less on my wants. An amazing thing happened…I found the time I needed for my wants because my needs were being taken care of at the exact same time.

Don’t let perfect ruin good! And don’t let good ruin doing something!

I used to let the desire for perfection paralyze me and prevent me from moving forward. The perception that I could not work on my wants until all my needs were perfectly satisfied was crippling; the only thing I ever did perfectly was nothing.

Since then, I have learned that the only ‘right’ way to do something is to get moving. In meditation, gratitude, and spiritual practice something is always better than nothing!

7 Ways Your Height Affects Your Health

At 6 feet, 8 inches, Dr. Eeric Truumees literally stands out. “People remember who I am,” says the orthopedic surgeon in Austin, Texas. But despite height’s association with social and professional benefits, such as appearing more attractive and earning more money, towering over others has downfalls, too. “The bane of my height has been hitting my head on things,” Truumees finds, “and as I get a little slower and little less flexible, I find I’m doing that more often.” That’s just the start of height’s influence on health. Here are seven medical issues that may disproportionately affect people who are taller or shorter than average:

1. Longevity

From an evolutionary perspective, there’s a price for enjoying the perks of being tall: a shorter lifespan. As the theory goes, “growing faster and being bigger will mean that you’ll have a shorter life, and we’ve seen that in rats,” says Mary Schooling, a professor at the City University of New York School of Public Health and Health Policy. But in humans, how the theory plays out isn’t quite clear. While certain genes have been linked to both short stature and long life, and shorter populations also seem to live longer, it’s tough to know whether stature itself influences lifespan or if characteristics like nutrition, socioeconomic status and disease risk are responsible.

2. Cancer

If you think about what cancer is ― abnormal cells multiplying out of control ― “being taller and having a higher risk of cancer makes some sort of sense,” Schooling says, since more cells might mean more opportunity for a cancer-causing mutation. That explanation plays out in the research on hormone-related cancers, such as breast, ovarian and prostate, which are more common among the height-gifted. Growth hormone, too, may play a role in the development of cancer, since studies suggest that a lack of it lowers your risk of the disease. “That would be another possible pathway,” Schooling says.

3. Heart disease and diabetes

Here’s one area where short people get the, well, short end of the stick: They seem to be more prone to heart disease and diabetes, research indicates. “Greater height might allow larger, more robust blood vessels,” Schooling explains. Or, perhaps taller people tend to be protected from cardiometabolic conditions because they were fed healthier diets as children or grew up in an environment where they were less exposed to infections. “We don’t know for sure if it’s really truly the height, or whether it’s something else which makes you taller and protects you against cardiovascular disease,” Schooling says.

4. Lung transplantation

Whether in line at the deli counter or separated from friends at a concert, short people can be at a disadvantage when seeking attention. That tendency can be particularly detrimental if those folks are waiting for a lung transplant: Research suggests people 5 feet, 3 inches or shorter wait longer for the organ and are more likely to die in the process than organ recipients with more average heights. The authors suggest adjusting the transplant process – including potentially surgically “downsizing” too-big lungs – to address the disparity.

5. Injuries

Not only are tall people more injury-prone, but their injuries are often worse than those experienced by the shorter set. “Taller patients, when they take a fall, they’re going to go a lot further and … the impact will be higher,” Truumees says, noting that older tall people have higher rates of hip fracture. Some data suggests lanky people may also be crippled by slower reactions times, he adds, since their nerve impulses have farther to travel. Professional athletes, for one, know the consequences of this phenomenon all too well: Towering players, Truumees says, tend to have higher rates of injury and take longer to recover than their littler teammates.

6. Blood clots

Long legs: Great if you’re a model, not-so-great if you’re on a long plane ride, wearing a cast as you recover from surgery or are otherwise unable to move your leg muscles frequently to prevent blood clots, Truumees says. Indeed, one study found that men 6 feet or taller were 2.6 times more likely to develop venous thromboembolism than men at least four inches shorter; men who were both tall and obese were more than five times as likely to develop the condition. “Those people need to be very careful,” Truumees says, since, in the most severe cases, blood clots can travel to the lungs and cause death.

7. Spine, neck and back problems

Most workspaces aren’t designed with non-average heights in mind: “Short people, tall people – they’re all working around the same cubicle or work unit, and that can cause all kinds of back and neck problems,” particularly for the tall ones, who are more prone to spine conditions like scoliosis, says Truumees, director of spine research at the Seton Spine and Scoliosis Center in Austin. While ensuring your workspace is ergonomically correct helps, some environments, like planes, can’t be altered – much to Truumees’s disappointment. “They say life is about the journey, not the destination,” he says, “but for me, it’s the destination – the journey is not all that fun.”

Trump Picks Pence

TRUMP PICKS PENCE
by Robert Brustein

Trump on the fence
Has ended suspense
By choosing Mike Pence,
For his new Vice President.
Though horribly dense,
There’s little nonsense
About Pence in defense
Of dollars and cents.
He’d like AK Seventeens
In the hands of all teens
Who, roused by their genes,
Would empty their spleens
Onto anti-Right scenes.
An evangelist dissed,
He gets terribly pissed
At the burgeoning list
Of all those raised fists
In Los Angeles.
Pence is not bribable,
And is totally reliable
In quoting the Bible,
While Trump is more liable
Not to know any Scripture.
Well, you get the picture.

The American Consultants Rx discount prescription cards are to be given free to anyone in need of help curbing the high cost of prescription drugs.

Due to the rising costs, unstable economics, and the mounting cost of prescriptions, American Consultants Rx Inc. (ACRX) a.k.a (ACIRX) an Atlanta based company was born in 2004. The ACRX discount prescription card program was created and over 25 million discount prescription cards were donated to over 18k organizations across the country to be distributed to those in need of prescription assistance free of charge since 2004.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. They also possess no eligibility requirements, no forms to fill out, or expiration date as well .One card will take care of a whole family. Also note that the ACRX cards will come to your organization already pre-activated .The cards are good at over 50k stores from Walgreen, Wal mart, Eckerd”s, Kmart, Kroger, Publix, and many more. Any one can use these cards but ACRX is focusing on those who are uninsured, underinsured, or on Medicare. The ACRX cards are now in Spanish as well.

American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. Please include name (if organization please include organization and contact name),mailing address, designate Spanish or English, amount of cards requested, and telephone number.

American Consultants Rx is working diligently to assist as many people and organizations as possible. It should be noted that while many other organizations and companies place a cost on their money saving cards, American Consultants Rx does not believe a cost should be applied, just to assist our fellow Americans. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

The Pioneer Plaque

“It’s a kindness that the mind can go where it wishes.” ― Ovid, “The Poems of Exile: Tristia and the Black Sea Letters”

“Language is the only homeland.” ― Czesław Miłosz

“These are all I have. I do not have the wide, bright beacon of some solid old lighthouse, guiding ships safely home, past the jagged rocks. I only have these little glimmers that flicker and then go out.” ― Rebecca Wells, “Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood”

The Silent Languages

It is Day Two of one of my headaches, which usually last for three. It is morning, and I am in bed, my head wrapped in a black-and-white Yasser Arafat scarf, one forearm pressed hard against my skull and the other resting on my husband’s chest.

It is on this latter arm that the jazz musician with whom I live is “playing,” with the fingers of one hand, a tune. A silent tune, as my skinny forearm is no trumpet.

Dean knows that, while the pain in my left temple is relentless, language–of any sort–will tempt me out of the hole down which pain thrusts me. Eventually, I will have to know . . . what tune he is playing. Eventually, the language which he speaks so fluently, and hears constantly within his cranium, and which I can only hear (and then, imperfectly), when a band performs it, will charm me (as the flute, the cobra).

“What are you playing?” I ask, eventually.

He smiles and, in his endearing falsetto, pipes a bar or two. “‘Spring is Here,'” he interjects.

“By?”

“Rodgers and Hart. Stan Kenton.”

“So, I have an entire orchestra playing here? On my arm?”

The fingers are onto something else, however. “Now, what?”

“‘Yesterdays.’ By Kern and Harbach. Stan Kenton again, though.”

Not skipping a beat, he begins ‘Stompin’ At The Savoy.’

Lying here, in almost total silence, one of us speaking through the fingers of a hand, the other listening, clumsily, through the skin of a forearm, we are something like the members of two early, isolated tribes of homo sapiens, upon first contact. I will never have time enough to learn the language-of-jazz in which my spouse has been steeped since early childhood. And, by this point in our marriage, I know he will never learn the proper use of “went” and “gone”: his participles will remain, for this grammarian, blood-curdling, lo, unto the grave, whichever of us arrives there first.

“I’ve never went to . . .” says Dean.

“Gone to!” says Elizabeth. “Gone!*&%”

When one of us is in pain, in the little co-mingled tribe that is this marriage, the silent languages predominate: those comprising simply sounds, as opposed to words; those expressed through touch.

Throughout my husband’s surgery of a month ago, and my own headaches, we have spoken, for the most part, without a lot of words. In fact, because I myself am so beset and beleaguered by words, living with a musician, who communicates primarily and happily and by choice via sounds alone, most of those sounds mediated by instruments (and, so, at a remove of one or two from the human breath or the human hand, or both), I have found being with Dean a relief, a refuge.

In our house, there is much music, but most of it comes without lyrics.

Which is not to say we do not communicate profoundly. We communicate, with all our various languages, signs, and signals, across most silences and distances. But we speak best, usually, without words.

What, I wonder, did Homo sapiens and Homo neanderthalensis “say,” upon first encountering one another, over 100,000 years ago, somewhere in the Middle East? What was communicated in that first gaze?

In the way that we “use” language, and considering the languages we have chosen to learn well, even over the short course of our shared time on the planet, my husband and I could be members of different species. Here, we have an instance of Homo trumpetensis taking up residence with Homo comma-oxfordensis
.
No wonder one of us seems always to have a headache (she said, smiling).

Lost in Translation: “Saudade” & “Hiraeth”

We are losing human languages, year by year, as we lose the last native speakers of each.

Languages go extinct with their speakers, unless studied, recorded, and preserved for prosperity, and many, many human languages (I think, just, of all the extinct aboriginal languages of Australia) were gone before . . . we knew it. In this new century, with the death of their last-standing native speakers, we have lost Klallam, Linvonian, the Cromarty dialect of Scots, and Pazeh, along with at least 14 other distinct tongues.

Tongues: given my husband’s (and Koko the gorilla’s]) fluent fingers, tongues and breath are not essential for communication, but most languages may still be called tongues.

Language has ever been based on breath. And tongues. Both human.

And, with every year, and every year of globalization, the tongues we speak decline in number. Soon, we will be left with what, which? Chinese? Spanish? English? Hindi? And, then? Just Chinese?

I grieve the loss of all tongues for, in and through each, we have expressed what is almost impossible to express in others.

There is one, solitary Portuguese word, saudade, for example, which originated in Galician, and for which English (and perhaps all other languages) has no twin, no cognate (or “blood relative”).

Saudade (as per Wikipedia) “describes a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing might never return. A stronger form of saudade might be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost lover, or a family member who has gone missing, moved away, separated, or died. Saudade was once described as ‘the love that remains’ after someone is gone.

Saudade is the recollection of feelings, experiences, places or events that once brought excitement, pleasure, well-being, which now triggers the senses and makes one live again. It can be described as an emptiness, like someone (e.g., one’s children, parents, sibling, grandparents, friends, pets) or something (e.g., places, things one used to do in childhood, or other activities performed in the past) that should be there in a particular moment but is missing, and the individual feels this absence. It brings sad and happy feelings all together, sadness for missing and happiness for having experienced the feeling.

“In Portuguese, Tenho saudades tuas(European Portuguese) or Tenho saudades de você (Brazilian Portuguese), translates as ‘I have saudade of you,’ meaning ‘I miss you,’ but carries a much stronger tone. In fact, one can have saudade of someone whom one is with, but have some feeling of loss towards the past or the future.

“In Brazil, the Day of Saudade is officially celebrated on 30 January.”

I, myself, “have saudade of” the lost languages of Klallam, Linvonian, the Cromarty dialect of Scots, and Pazeh, along with the other 14 tongues which have gone extinct since the year 2000. I have saudade, as well, of all those lost languages whose names I will never even know.

For me, in a sense, every day is The Day of Saudade.

And then, there is the Welsh word hiraeth. Wikipedia: “The University of Wales, Lampeter, attempts to define it as homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed. It is a mix of longing, yearning, nostalgia, wistfulness, or an earnest desire for the Wales of the past.

“Oxford and Merriam-Webster define hiraeth as: (noun) ‘a homesickness for a home you cannot return to, or that never was.’

If this sounds familiar: “Hiraeth bears considerable similarities with the Portuguese concept of saudade (a key theme in Fado music), Brazilian Portuguese banzo (more related to homesickness), Turkish gurbet, Galician morriña, Romanian dor.”

So, whatever language we speak, or no longer speak, we Homo sapiens, trumpetensis, and/or comma-oxfordensis, have coined a plethora of words with which to express À la recherche du temps perdu.

Extinction is a concept with which we have long been acquainted, but with which we are never, ever, comfortable.

Breath & Dragon’s Breath

Recently, in my ongoing, Oedipal, and Conradian quest to nail down just when and through what mechanism runaway climate change will effect the Sixth Extinction, a planetary cataclysm resembling the great Permian die-off, in which fully 83 percent of Earth’s genera went extinct, I came across a long, peer-reviewed article by marine biologist Dr. Ronald L. Shimek, former chair of the Biology Department at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, assistant director of the Bamfield Marine Science Centre on Vancouver Island, Canada, and a “CORAL Magazine” senior editor. (The version of the essay which I cite here, and which is available online is this one: http://www.reef2rainforest.com/2016/04/22/dragon-watch/)

Dr. Shimek, while researching coral reef extinctions, one of his areas of expertise, stumbled upon the research of Dr. Natalia E. Shakhova, “a Russian oceanographer and geologist who has been studying the permafrost methane distribution throughout the offshore region of the Laptev Sea known as the Eastern Siberian Arctic Shelf (or ESAS in scientific circles) and the adjacent onshore areas.”

Shakhova’s research has been in another neck of our shared woods, entirely, from that of Shimek. Her focus is the release of methane into the atmosphere, and the probability that the next great planetary extinction will be caused by a catastrophic release of the gas also known as “Dragon’s Breath.”

Quoting from Shimek’s piece: “[Shakhova] estimates the [methane] clathrate deposits in the ESAS to be between hundreds and thousands of gigatons. This is not easy to visualize, but the total mass of carbon in living plants and animals on Earth has been estimated at 500 gigatons, making these buried deposits of solidified methane unimaginably huge in the true sense of the word. Some observers have dubbed the collective, buried power of these deposits the ‘Methane Dragon.'”

Shimek continues: “In 2010, Shakhova and her co-workers estimated that a catastrophic methane release in excess of 50 gigatons (a minuscule percentage of what is in that area) is possible at any time. She said, and continues to assert, that such a catastrophic release could take place over a period of one to ten years. The fear is not the potential explosive effect–terrifying caribou in the wild, barren north–but rather the massive infusion of enormous clouds of potent greenhouse gas into Earth’s atmosphere. As a result of her work, the question that needs to be asked is this: ‘Are her estimates of catastrophic release reasonable and possible? And, if they are, what difference would that make?'”

Shimek concludes his essay (and what can I really do but quote him at length?): “When and how things might unfold is profoundly uncertain, but the trigger point for the short-term catastrophic methane release postulated by Dr. Shakhova could be a temperature rise as low as an additional 1.5°C or as high as an additional 10°C. These are not the rantings of fearmongers, but scenarios described by respected Arctic oceanographers. The 50-gigaton decadal methane pulse scenario posited by Shakhova, Semiletov, and Alekseev, who are probably the leading experts on Arctic methane and methane ices, is considered plausible by scientists at the UK Meteorology Office, as well as multiple scientific reviews, including one written by more than 20 Arctic specialists. Current Arctic atmospheric methane concentrations are unprecedented, but the best minds believe that if 50 Gt were added to the atmosphere, conditions would become very bad, very fast. It would be, some experts fear, the beginning of ‘runaway global warming’ that humans would be powerless to stop.

“Given an effective meltdown of methane clathrates in the Arctic, climate expert Dr. Malcolm Light has estimated global temperatures of around 50°C above averages between the years 2040 and 2050. In summer, if the normal average had been 30°C (for example, where I live in Montana), the post-methane belch temperature would rise to 80°C or 176°F.

“While the timing is unclear, the consequences can be predicted with some certainty. They include: Complete melting of polar ice caps; global flooding; Disruption of global ocean currents and gyres; demise of oceanic fisheries; Crop and food production failures; Spread of disease and parasites; Collapse of power grids and transportation systems; Mass human mortality in heat and cold waves; Catastrophic breakdowns in political, economic, and societal stability.”

Shimek concludes: “There is no easy way to write these words: Should such an event occur, it is certain that the coral reefs I set out to research would have no chance of survival. More to the point, most of us would perish.”

While We Have Breath

Other scientists believe all of us will perish, and the event will occur before the end of the current century. Day by day, I review the science, and it seems, to me, incontrovertible. The Sixth Extinction, the one brought about by mankind, will occur in the lifetime of our grandchildren, and it will snuff out every last creature “with breath,” and most without, on our shared planet.

If I, with my small knowledge of science, know this truth to be self-evident, how long will it take my peers in “The Reading West” to surpass me in my researches? I would like to think that many, many of us will come “online” with the science rapidly, and turn global attention to what appears to be just ahead for us all.

In thinking out loud about extinction here, I have begun with the extinction of languages but, perhaps just after my own sojourn on the planet ends, and the small extinction my death will signify, language itself will become extinct along with any being who parsed, or will ever parse, language.

Based upon and an expression of the consciousness of Homo sapiens (and Homo sapiens‘ forebears), language–the concept, the thing itself–will disappear with us, as though it, and we, never were.

Floating through space on the wings of Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecrafts were, are, the so-called Pioneer plaques, humankind’s early-1970s “messages in a bottle” to the universe. If and when they are “received,” and if ever they are “understood” by other beings–a possibility so remote as to defy all probability–perhaps someone, somewhere, in some dimension, may know that we lived and breathed: but the likelihood of our still being here then appears nil.

The enormity of that realization is now being pondered by relatively few homo sapiens, but will affect each and every one of us, whether we choose to inform ourselves, or not.

And many of us–the current ponderers–believe the time has long since passed when we might have avoided the iceberg, or the dragon’s breath. The time now is for pondering alone. For facing the music as we can.

Readers still with me here may want to explore the writings of Dr. Guy McPherson and, perhaps, join me on Facebook in the (closed) group, Near Term Human Extinction Support Group.

We who speak and breathe and touch and sing now face the end of humankind’s tenure on Earth, and we will together be choosing how we face it; not if, or when.

While I have breath, and while I may be heard, I will continue saying, “Choose. Choose how we go forward. Choose together.”

We have no other choices left us, we who coined the words saudade and hiraeth.

How To Sleep When Horrific News Becomes The Norm

Last night more than 260 civilians were killed in violent clashes with military forces in Istanbul.

The night before, at least 84 people lost their lives when a truck deliberately zigzagged through crowds of people celebrating Bastille Day in Nice, France.

Two weeks ago Alton Sterling and Philando Castile were shot and killed by police and five police officers were gunned down by a sniper. The previous month, 49 people were killed by a shooter at an iconic gay nightclub in Orlando.

And scores of other shootingsbombings and tragedies have happened in the days and hours in between.

We heard the stories. We saw the pictures. We watched terror happen on video.

Mothersfatherssonsdaughtersloverscolleaguesfriends and the man from down the street who “would have gave you the shirt off his back” lost their lives.

For victims’ loved ones, the grief is immeasurable. For African-Americans, the pain of watching police brutality against black people comes with a toll of its own. For people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, the hurt of an attack against their own community is agonizing.

People intimately affected by these tragedies experience emotions that others of us cannot fathom.

But even for those without a personal connection to these terrible events, sadness and pain are still a reality.

We feel pain even if we’re not involved

If you see, hear or even read about something traumatic ― even if you’re not directly involved ― you can still have an emotional response, Robert Hawkins, an associate professor at the Silver School of Social Work at New York University, told The Huffington Post.

“This is trauma that doesn’t necessarily happen to you or you didn’t necessarily experience, but you become affected by it,” he said.

It can be worse if you identify with those affected, explained David Kaplan, chief professional officer at the American Counseling Association.

“If you relate to the person who was attacked in any way, you’re going to grieve because it’s also part of you,” Kaplan told HuffPost previously.

But that grief, while normal and expected, can lead to stress and sleeplessness.

“With the frequency of shootings and terror attacks there is a sense of anxiety that’s building in people,” Anita Gadhia-Smith, a psychologist in Washington, D.C., told The New York Times ― “a sense of vulnerability and powerlessness.”

Traumatic life events are among the biggest causes of anxiety and depression, research suggests. But experts say taking steps to care for yourself ― including taking care of your sleep ― is what helps you cope best with that stress.

Stress causes chemical changes in our bodies

Not sleeping is the body’s natural response after hearing about and watching disturbing events, according to sleep psychologist Jason Ong of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

When the body releases stress hormones, the emotion-processing areas of the brain stay on, suppressing some of its sleep-promoting systems, he said. Even though your body knows you’re tired, your brain knows something is wrong and you need to deal with it.

The bottom line: research shows that when we’re stressed, the chemical and biological changes in our bodies can interfere with our sleep.

That stress and sleeplessness is important to address early, experts say, before it leads to long-term cycles of mental health problems and chronic insomnias (which can grow from cycles of short-term insomnias).

“Anxiety and insomnia can feed each other and become a cycle,” the National Sleep Foundation says.

Here are seven self-care tips that can help you deal with worries and sleep better:

1. Talk about what’s bothering you

A big part of dealing with a tragedy is expressing your emotions, said Steve Orma, a clinical psychologist and author of Stop Worrying and Go to Sleep: How to Put Insomnia to Bed for Good. “If you’re sad, allow yourself to cry. If you’re anxious and afraid, say ‘I’m anxious and afraid,’” he previously told HuffPost.

If you’re sad, allow yourself to cry. If you’re anxious and afraid, say ‘I’m anxious and afraid.’
Steve Orma, clinical psychologist

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration recommends that you talk to family and friends about how you’re feeling.

2. Do things that help you relax

Relaxation and meditation techniques help ease stress and can be especially helpful before bed, said Phyllis Zee, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

3. Don’t change your sleep routines

Losing sleep at night might make that snooze button more tempting. But picking up poor sleep habits just makes it harder for you to fall asleep at night, Orma said.

If you’re not a regular nap-taker, don’t start. Avoid sleeping in later than usual. And don’t suddenly start taking sleep medications because you may grow dependent on them, he said.

4. Turn off the news at night

Leave a news-free buffer of at least 30 to 45 minutes before you try to sleep to allow yourself to relax, Ong said. Limiting your exposure to media coverage of violence will help you relax and sleep better.

5. Practice good sleep hygiene

It might sound obvious, but it’s worth noting that the times that you’re more likely to have trouble sleeping are when it’s most important to do the things that are good for sleep, Zee said. Exercise during the day, but not too close to bedtime. Get some sun during the day, but avoid bright lighter later at night (which can make it harder for you to fall asleep and actually make you sleep worse).

6. Give yourself a break

You need to tell yourself it’s ok to have a few nights of poor sleep, Orma said. The more you beat yourself up for not sleeping well and the more upset you get about it, the more anxious you can become about not sleeping and fuel the sleepless cycle.

Talk to yourself like you were talking to your best friend or a child… in a very nurturing, supportive or positive way.
Steve Orma, clinical psychologist

“Talk to yourself like you were talking to your best friend or a child. You would talk in a very nurturing, supportive or positive way,” Orma told HuffPost previously. “You wouldn’t freak them out.”

7. Get the help you need

If coping on your own or with your family members is not enough, talk to a psychologist or licensed medical health professional, recommends the American Psychological Association.

While there is no one timeline that fits everyone for how long it should take for a trauma to subside, the APA says you might benefit from seeking professional help if you feel overwhelmed by sadness or helplessness, if the problem doesn’t seem to be getting better after talking with family and friends or if you find it difficult to maintain your everyday routine.

Should The United States Support The Military Coup In Turkey?

The American people typically have little stomach for a military coup. But given the undemocratic nature of the Erdogan regime, Turkey may have had no choice. Should the coup be successful, the United States and the rest of the democratic world should insist that the country return to democratic rule, by the Turkish people, with a constitution that ensures someone cannot turn the republic into an autocratic regime.

During the Cold War, and even before, America winked at, or even encouraged military coups in Latin America, and elsewhere. Sometimes one undemocratic leader ousted another. Other times, the elected leader was pushed aside. So why a republic, such as the United States, support such actions? The thinking was summed up by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who said of would-be Nicaraguan coup leader Anastasio Somoza “He’s an S.O.B. But he’s our S.O.B.”

But even as the United States exerted its influence indirectly, or directly sometimes when troops were sent to support an overthrow or a resulting war, it actually weakened itself by such actions. Some of the leaders really were “S.O.B.s,” which turned the countryside against an American ally. Other times, such support for coups in allied countries made fellow allies less likely to support American actions. Even our own corporations, which thought such actions would benefit their bottom line, found the dictators more troublesome than the democratic leaders, as earlier research of mine revealed.

The best policies were adopted during the Kennedy Administration. Military coups were not tolerated, and when one occurred, pressure was brought upon the junta to find a way to bring back democracy, even if the military was a better form of government than its predecessors. This plan was undermined in Vietnam in 1963, with disastrous results for America.

This is where the United States finds itself tonight. Turkey has suffered under Recep Tayyip Erdogan. After engineering many positive reforms, Erdogan has clearly mismanaged the country. He has targeted critical journalists more than ISIS, leaving the country vulnerable to attack. He has waged war against the Kurds because of their electoral success in a party that reaches out to all Turks. He has sought political gain in the form of a presidential system that would empower him much more than the current constitution. And without waiting for a new one to be written, he has taken his ceremonial position to wield the power he seeks.

When I was there, I didn’t find the people of a democracy. I found frightened college students, nervous professors, journalists expecting to be arrested at any moment, and other Turks cynical about the prospects for any freedom, especially after Gezi Park demonstrators were attacked. Being Muslim provided little protection, as supporters of moderate cleric Fethullah Gulen found out. People of all ages could be jailed, just for insulting the President.

Only supporters of the ruling party, the AKP, and tourists seemed happy. But that was before the recent wave of terrorism struck the country, along with the war against Kurds. And even AKP supporters have reason to be fearful for their safety, after Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was sacked.

Yet despite the major flaws of the Erdogan regime, the United States should learn from its past mistakes. The United States should work to ensure that whether the military succeeds or Erdogan survives, the Turkish government work to ensure the democratic freedoms and respect the civil liberties and political rights of its people. Otherwise, it won’t be a communist insurgency that benefits from our missteps in supporting a dictatorship. It will be a terrorist group that takes advantage of our support for an undemocratic regime.
