Republicans Ask Democrats To Trust Them On Flint Funding, Offer No Reason To Trust Them

WASHINGTON ― As a government shutdown suddenly looks possible, Republicans are imploring their Democratic colleagues to agree to a short-term spending bill now and trust that they will address the Flint water crisis in other legislation later.

The only problem? The bill Republicans say should be the vehicle for Flint ― a long-awaited water resources measure ― is supposed to move through the House this week without Flint.

House GOP leaders contend that they want to address the Michigan water crisis in the so-called Water Resources Development Act, not the short-term bill, known as a continuing resolution. Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said Thursday that Flint “should be dealt with in the WRDA bill,” and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) said Monday that the water resources bill was “the best place” to address it.

So it is perhaps curious that House Republicans are trying to move the bill without Flint aid. “The sooner we get the WRDA bill through in the House, the sooner we can begin conference,” McCarthy said.

But McCarthy didn’t commit to making sure Flint was eventually attached. In fact, even if the House passes the water bill, they would need to vote on an additional piece of legislation to set up conference. And with lawmakers set to leave town after this week for the next month and a half, Flint aid would almost certainly be delayed until November at the earliest ― if it happens at all.

That’s a big reason why Democrats are insisting that Flint be part of the CR, particularly when Republicans are willing to attach emergency Louisiana flood aid to the government funding bill.

There is an amendment from Michigan Democrat Dan Kildee to add Flint aid to the WRDA measure, but there’s a good chance the House Rules Committee doesn’t allow a vote for the same reason that the legislation doesn’t currently include money: It’s in the jurisdiction of other committees, namely, Energy and Commerce, and Appropriations.

Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Bill Shuster (R-Pa.) told the Rules Committee on Monday night that he opposed including the amendment because it would set a precedent for local drinking water provisions in WRDA. And asked Monday if he would support Rules giving the amendment a vote, McCarthy dodged the question by noting that he’s not on the Rules Committee.

McCarthy was enthusiastic about a WRDA conference, however, noting that “there are other issues” lawmakers could address in conference ― potentially even California drought provisions, other sources suggested.

But Democrats have no guarantees on Flint if it isn’t in the CR. And if Republicans want to dig in on not including the aid in the continuing resolution, Democrats could block government funding, betting that the GOP takes the brunt of the blame over a shutdown.

Meanwhile, WRDA has its own issues. House Transportation and Infrastructure ranking Democrat, Peter DeFazio of Oregon, withdrew his support of the legislation last week after Republicans stripped a section allowing the government to use the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund to dredge harbors. DeFazio also sent the Rules Committee a letter on Monday calling out an $ 810 million project to build athletic fields and a splash park.

If most Democrats follow DeFazio’s lead, Republicans will be looking to pass the bill almost entirely on their own, meaning Flint provisions could imperil the legislation.

All of this is to say Democrats have a number of reasons to demand Flint funding in the CR. And if Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) is intent on keeping the funding out, Congress could be heading toward a government shutdown that no one expected.

Bethlehem’s Enduring Bach Festival: GPS For The Soul

If you need to destress from the noise of the national debate, consider how the Bethlehem Bach Festival has helped communities come together to find calm, peace and prayer for more than 100 years.

2016-09-26-1474905909-5545014-Festival2016GregFUnfgeldCharlotteMattax.jpg

It was in 1900 that the two-year old Bach Choir of Bethlehem gave the first performance in North America of Bach’s greatest choral work, his Mass in B Minor. With only a few exceptions, the Choir has performed the Mass every year since. Their voices, nearly one hundred strong, cannot have been more fervent, nor more inspired by community spirit, than they were earlier this year at Packer Memorial Church, on the campus of Lehigh University, May 13 and 14. it was the first weekend of the 109th Bethlehem Bach Festival, and the house was packed.

Led by by Greg Funfgeld, artistic director and conductor since 1983, the Bethlehem Bach Festival’s two performances each year of its signature work, the Mass in B Minor, represent a link with the America of Andy Hardy. It was a time when classical music, and the arts in general, aspired to provide guidance and energy to communities nationwide; in the case of Bethlehem, it was according to the University’s holistic motto, “Homo Minister et Interpres Naturae,” which translates loosely to “Woman and Man, servants and interpreters of nature.”

2016-09-26-1474905863-9379570-Festival2016crowdoutsidePackerChurch.jpg The performance was one of integrity, movement, passion and weight. The effortless virtuosity and stylistic homogeneity of the combined forces in the chapel’s stone sanctity, allowed Bach’s music to sing out with infectious, exhilarating enthusiasm. Agnes Zsigovics, Rosa Lamoreaux, Daniel Taylor, Benjamin Butterfield, William Sharp and Daniel Lichti were outstanding soloists. The Choir was large, warm and flexible.

With a collaborative interpretive approach based on the latest scholarly research, kept honest by the great Bach biographer Christoph Wolff in the front row, Funfgeld focused on creating a compelling flow in which the emotional weight of each section was directed upwards, as if the music were being offered to Bach’s God. The rolling out of the massive, six-part fugue in the “Sanctus” was the most perfect single demonstration of how Funfgeld’s combined forces combined the intimate and the infinite. And beyond the music, there was a different authenticity from listening in an audience which, as I came to know, heard — as Bach intended in his humility — the prayers for consolation and peace inseparably from the music itself.

If you were not there, you can hear the same deep intensity of music making on the Festival’s recording from 1998. Bethlehem may no longer have Bethlehem Steel, but it has in the cultural fuel of its Bethlehem Bach Festival a generous helping of GPS for the soul.

2016-09-26-1474905935-9362483-Festival2016BachChoraleSing.jpg There was more to the two-day musical feast than just the B Minor Mass. On Friday afternoon, Dr. Wolff gave a stimulating lecture, and the first of two public, Bach chorale sing-alongs ensued. Friday evening, it was an exuberant, feel good concert of Bach’s gloriously optimistic Cantata No. 100, the Second Brandenburg Concerto with the brilliant trumpet soloist Terry Everson, and the procession of gorgeous delights known as the Easter Oratorio.

On Saturday morning, at the University’s Zoellner Arts Center just down the block, the Taylor 2 unit of the Paul Taylor Dance Company, with the Festival Orchestra in the pit, charmed the audience, who charmed them back with their encouragement and eager applause, in a series of joyful, inventive responses to and illuminations of music by Handel and Bach.

Then at last, after a brisk walk and a healthy lunch, the B Minor Mass of Johann Sebastian Bach, Part One, began at 2:30; Part Two began at 4:30. Then out into the night for a recreation on the Moravian College campus of the Cafe Zimmermann in Leipzig, where Bach and his fellow musicians and townspeople spent many pleasant evenings, quenching their thirsts in both music and coffee. It was thirsty work being Bach.

The Bethlehem Bach Festival’s endurance has enabled the Bach Choir of Bethlehem to give 31 concerts and educational programs year-round, reaching an audience of more than 20,000. The Choir will conclude its season December 10 and 11 with Christmas concerts in Bethlehem and Allentown, and probably snow on the ground and sleigh bells ringing in the air.

When Life Laughs At Your Best Laid Plans

This month found me exploring the country of Japan for the first time.

Those of you who know me won’t be surprised to learn that I did a whole lot of planning… or, as I lovingly called it, “Japlanning”… in the months leading up to the trip. And that Japlanning paid off.

Mostly.

There were a few moments, however, when things didn’t quite go according to the Japlan. When, it seemed, life seemed to laugh at it. Heartily.

Like when we walked a looooong way to get into the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden.

2016-09-26-1474909189-4146063-blogclosedgate.jpg

Or when my eagerly anticipated stewed fishcake lunch had a texture I couldn’t quite…swallow.

2016-09-26-1474909227-5109784-blogfishcake.jpg

There were plenty of other examples during our two-week adventure, and Hubbie and I tried hard to gracefully make the best of these moments.

And we did. Sometimes.

And in those moments… when we let go of our stubborn hold on our plan, the unexpected turn of events became another part of the adventure.

Which led me to a new way of looking at life…and to a new word to describe it.

Plexible.

What does it mean to be plexible? It means you plan things out… and then you commit to being flexible in the moment.

See what I did there?

Stay with me… this is a bit more complex than it might sound at first.

There will be all kinds of times when you need to be plexible…

  • … like when you book the perfect flight to your class reunion, but weather makes it impossible to take off… so you need to figure out another way to connect with old friends
  • … like when you put together the perfect presentation on your research, but your daughter gets the flu on the big day… so you need to figure out another way to share the info with your colleagues
  • … like when you’ve actually read the book for book club, but a friend scores last-minute tickets to hear your favorite ’80s rock band… so you need to figure out how to graciously bail out of your club meeting (and get those stains out of your old acid-washed jeans pronto)

The thing is… this lesson is actually not about being plexible. That’s too simple and, frankly, there’s really no choice in the matter. We can make all the plans we want, and sometimes life just won’t cooperate.

This lesson is about our attitude around being plexible… It’s about making the choice to be plexible… to do it with curiosity and, sometimes, with delight. Because it’s all part of the adventure.

And, sometimes, the thing we didn’t plan for actually beats out anything we ever could have dreamed up beforehand.

The important thing here is to find the balance in our fun new language. After all, plexible is made up of two words, and they’re both critically important.

  • We must plan, because planning helps us intentionally take actions that guide us toward a wide variety of the goals and desires and needs that matter to us.
  • We must be flexible because our plans… well, they just don’t always stick. Life laughs. Outside forces — both good and bad — get in the way.

Sure, you can avoid being plexible. You can fail to plan and let life just happen without focusing on the things that truly mean something to you at the moment.

Or… you can plan so hard, and get so attached to it, that you stubbornly refuse to give it up when things go a different way. Which doesn’t just create a terrible situation, but a terrible mood.

Sure, being plexible isn’t always fun. Sometimes planning is a drag. And, sometimes, when our plans don’t go the way we want, when life might laugh at them a bit, we can get very, very disappointed.

But.

If you decide to not just accept the need to be plexible, but to intentionally be plexible, and to do so with curiosity, you might just find that your disappointments aren’t quite as disappointing as before. Or maybe they’re not as disappointing for quite as long.

You might find that the new things you discover as a result bring you a whole new set of opportunities.

And, I promise you, you will find that all of that planning does pay off sometimes. In fact, it pays off a lot of the time.

Like when you’ve received one too many Japanese tofu breakfasts…and you find yourself grateful that, thanks to your Japlanning, you brought some oatmeal packets from home.

Here’s What Charlotte Protesters Want You To Know About Racism

CHARLOTTE, N.C. ― Protesters have flooded the streets of North Carolina’s largest city since 43-year-old Keith Scott was shot and killed by Charlotte-Mecklenburg police on Tuesday.

Many of those demonstrating are frustrated and tired of carrying the weight that comes with being black in America.

The Huffington Post asked them to share what they want everyone to know about race in America ― unfiltered and uncensored.

Here’s what they said.

“We will not be able to fight oppression, we will not be able to live in a system that was created for white men by white men … we need to completely abolish incarceration, abolish the police department ― and that’s when we’ll be able to get a chance.”

Catherine Farmer, 18

“It begins with us, it begins with the people. Until we begin to educate ourselves and educate our children on what racism truly is and what systemic racism is and what injustice is, nothing will ever change. Right now, we’re still caught up in a world where the old guard still runs things. And it’s very important for us as a whole ― black, white, Latino, Hispanic ― to come together to make these kind of changes. It’s destroying our country right now. It’s creating a division.”

“It’s not healthy for us at all. Right now, our people is being targeted. When I say ‘our people,’ I mean minorities. We’re being targeted by blue.”

Maurice Fair, 36

“It’s real, it’s a thing ― and just because others haven’t experienced it doesn’t mean it’s not real. We live it every day, so it needs to stop. No lives will matter until black lives matter, too.”

Cindy Robinson, 32

“[We need] more awareness in the justice system. A lot of people don’t understand the justice system or their rights.”

―Mario The Mic Man

“This isn’t anything unique, this isn’t a new situation that we’re in ― you know what I’m saying. Ever since America was established in the 1700s, we’ve been in this place. If people really wanna get out, we’re going to have to start exercising tactics that haven’t been exercised before.

A lot of the things that we’re doing right now are things that we’ve done … in the past. Doing the same thing and expecting different results is the definition of someone who’s insane.

We can’t be insane. We’re gonna have to try to do something different. We gotta realize that this isn’t a new problem. This is not something that’s extraordinary ― this is actually very ordinary. We’re gonna have to really put our brains together and utilize all tactics to get liberation.”

Dhoruba Shakur, 26

“The biggest problem in this nation is hypocrisy. America doesn’t seem to understand that she has become to black people what Britain was to her. When the constituents of the king were hung by [the] founding fathers, it was considered to be patriotism.

But, before that, they were considered to be terrorists. When you sit here and say that we can’t burn down buildings ― that wasn’t the case when you were doing destruction of property. And those who participated in it was held as martyrs during the Boston Tea Party.

It’s hypocrisy ― left and right, all across the board. We need to do what they’ve done. We need our 1776. They didn’t beg Britain to leave them alone. They didn’t beg for Britain to stop giving them taxation without representation. They did what they needed to do.”

What The Buddha Would Say To Mr. Trump

If a bull goes straight when the herd is crossing a road, then they will all go straight because he leads the way. The same among people. If the one who is thought to be the highest lives in goodness, the others do so too. The whole realm lives happily if the ruler lives rightly. The Buddha

This is true when the leader is virtuous and honest. But Donald Trump is leading his followers into a quagmire and they don’t even know it. He is using the most destructive of qualities–greed, hatred and delusion–to gain power and prestige. This is the behavior of an egomaniac who thrives at others’ expense.

We are not presuming to know what the Buddha might say to Mr. Trump, just as we don’t presume to know what might be said to any of us. But the Buddha clearly taught about the dangers of greed, hatred and ignorance, what he called the three poisons, that Trump displays frequently. Where greed grabs our desires, hatred uses fear to incite insecurity and then blames everyone else, while ignorance clouds our vision.

The three fires of greed, hatred and ignorance destroy the mind from which they are born. The Buddha

The mind is everything. What you think you become. The Buddha

Greed has many relatives, such as ambition, self-centeredness, pride, grasping and clinging, giving rise to dissatisfaction, irritation, frustration and anger. The craving to have and possess stops us from giving; it generates a fear of not having. Donald Trump personifies greed in his desperate desire to win at all costs, no matter how he does it. For instance, he insists on flying aboard his luxury jet, rather than a more practical airplane, at a cost to taxpayers of millions of dollars.

Hate is destructive, indiscriminate, like a snake it can rise up out of nowhere and attack. It is most seen in prejudice, whether against different races, political beliefs, or sexual preferences. When we are fixed in the belief that we are right, then anything that questions or threatens that belief becomes the enemy and must be eliminated. Hatred’s many bedfellows include criticism, sarcasm, misogyny, and racism. Need we say more?

The Buddha pointed out that such hatred becomes our own worst enemy for no matter how much we try to annihilate the hated one, the hate remains inside us, slowly destroying and eating away at our own happiness.

Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; while you are the one who gets burned. The Buddha

Abhorrence towards others is based on the belief that we are all separate from each other, that I am more important than you. This breaks friendships and families, while creating self-righteousness and arrogance. Prejudice closes our heart and shuts down our sensitivity.

The moment that you think of doing harm to someone, that thought harms you first. Unless you hate yourself, you can’t hate others. If you love others, that means that you create the feeling of love within you first, and then you offer the love to others. Your thoughts pass through your entire system, and are expressed through your mouth and through your hands and actions. Without thinking, you cannot speak or act. So the harmful thought, from its very origin, spoils your system. In other words, you can’t hit anyone else without striking yourself. Sri Swami Satchidananda

Where hatred closes our heart, delusion makes us believe there is a permanent, separate and fixed ‘me’ so that we take ourselves very seriously. It belies a lack of awareness, especially of anything outside ourselves. This is the ignorance of our essential connectedness with all others.

The heart is like a garden. It can grow compassion or fear. What seeds will you grow there? The Buddha

The First-Ever Facebook Live From Jail Had A Life-Saving Message

The Facebook Live post that should change the way America has been addressing the intersection of the addiction crisis and criminal justice reform.

This past week was the very first Prescription Opioid and Heroin Epidemic Awareness Week, designated by President Obama in a signed proclamation. I was fortunate enough to add my voice to the cause via a Medium article for the White House on Thursday. While I was honored to speak up on behalf of the more than 45 million Americans impacted by addiction and recovery, I thought it would be even more relevant to end this important week with a message from some men who are proving the status-quo dead wrong.

So, I picked up the phone and called my good friend John Shinholser with the McShin Foundation in Richmond, VA. John is on the front-lines every day, healing families and saving lives. He’s helped to implement one of the most unique, progressive recovery programs in America, the Chesterfield County Jail Heroin Addiction Recovery Program (aka HARP). I asked him if we could get the County Sheriff to allow us to bring a cell phone into the tank and let the inmates take over my Facebook LIVE to tell their stories. After talking with the Sheriff, not only did he give us permission, he said this is something that must be done. You see, Sheriff Karl Leonard – a Republican from a rural Virginia county – has seen the deaths and devastation from addiction first-hand. He deals with it every day. And he’s sick and tired of politics as usual. Sheriff Leonard was willing to try something different with respect to how we’re facing addiction in America. He’s facing it with urgency, compassion, empathy, and skill. And it’s beginning to heal his community.

These guys have a message for Hillary, Donald and the rest of America. See for yourself:

After the live feed wrapped, we were informed that this was, in fact, the very first Facebook Live ever done from within the walls of a jail. And that warmed my heart. It did so because with all the negative media recently around addiction, it’s important that America hears from the faces and voices that are flipping the status quo right on its head. What amazed me even more was that Sheriff Leonard is paying for this program from his own budget. He can’t get any state or federal funding for it. That’s unacceptable, especially since it only costs about $ 2,500 a month for 40 men ― or about $ 750 per year to truly rehabilitate each inmate. Imagine the long-term economic savings if we implemented a program like this in each and every small town and big city across the country. According to a study by the academic journal Crime & Delinquency, providing only 40 percent of the drug addicted treatment and recovery services over incarceration would save the U.S. economy over $ 12.9 billion per year.

I could go on forever about this subject. But I’m going to leave it here. Listen to these men, they have a voice. Even though they’re temporarily confined behind the walls of a county jail, they inspire us all to look at addiction and criminal justice a little differently. Maybe, one day soon, we can look upon this moment in time and talk about how the Sheriff and inmates in a rural Virginia town helped end the addiction crisis in America. I know it’s a tall order ― but it’s small victories like what’s happening in Chesterfield that’ll truly turn the tide.

The ACRX cards will offer discounts of name brand drugs of up to 40% off and up to 60% off of generic drugs. American Consultants Rx made arrangements online for the ACRX card to be available at http://www.acrxcards.com where it can also be downloaded. This arrangement has been made to allow organizations an avenue to continue assisting their clients in the community until they receive their orders of the ACRX cards. ACRX made it possible for cards to be requested from online for individuals and organizations free of charge. Request for the ACRX cards can also be made by mailing a request to : ACRX, P.O.Box 161336,Atlanta,GA 30321, faxing a written request to 404-305-9539,or calling the office at 404-767-1072. American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

The 11 Struggles Of Hypersensitive Individuals

    Here’s the cycle.

Person A does something person B doesn’t like.

Person B gets hurt and calls them out on it.

Person A gets mad at Person B.

It happens to me over and over and over again. It’s gotten to the point where I just expect it, like the people sitting in the splash zone at Sea World.

And then as I sat down to think about it, there’s a lot of struggles that us overly sensitive people go through. It’s not just one thing–it’s a multitude of them. So, in the name of self-therapy through writing, I’m going to list every single one of them.

    1. We’re Always The Bad Guy, Even Though We Shouldn’t Be

I’m going to write that again. We’re always the bad guy, even though we shouldn’t be. When somebody hurts us, we tell them about it. Then after we tell them, they feel like we’re the ones attacking THEM, when we’re simply telling them what hurt us. People, it’s really not that hard to avoid being a complete Cotton-Headed Ninnymuggins to somebody. Shout out to Will Ferrel.

    2. We Expect People To Be Somewhat Honorable

Many times when conflict arises and I know without a shadow of a doubt that I’m not wrong, I decide to just let things sit until an apology presents itself from the other party. Yeah, about 95 percent of the time that doesn’t happen. Our problem is we expect people to have at least a single shred of dignity and simply say two words that would make things better. Guys, being sensitive goes both ways. We get hurt, but all we need is a freaking apology and we’re better. We don’t need gifts and dinners and vases full of flowers.

And I also want to say that the ball isn’t always in our court. We need to express to the other party that something is wrong. That’s our duty to others.

    3. Things End Up Blown Way Out Of Proportion

Because of our sensitivity, and because of the other party’s hard-headedness, things get blown way out of proportion. Things escalate because two simple words couldn’t be said. One person couldn’t humble themselves and say a simple apology.

    4. We Can’t Fix It

In case anyone was wondering, we can’t fix this. For the most part, we’re very thoughtful individuals who expect much of ourselves and not much from others. But when somebody pushes our buttons, and we have a few, something must happen. It’s nothing that we can fix. We can try to improve at communicating that we’re hurt instead of internalizing it, but that’s it. We are who we are.

    5. People Get Fed Up With Us Easily

It gets to the point with certain people where it’s like the boy who cried wolf syndrome. They get really annoyed that things keep going wrong, even when they should know by now what makes us tick. At one point you have to start wondering whether a relationship between the two of you is even healthy. Not all people are meant to get into a relationship with or be friends with somebody who is sensitive.

    6. We’re Left Hurting Extremely Badly

When we do call people out on something, often times they just don’t apologize. Sometimes they even try to make it worse. This is the hardest part of it all because somebody we like or love is deliberately trying to hurt us more. Nothing is worse to a sensitive person than deliberate insensitivity.

    7. Most Times We End Up Saying Sorry

Trust me, we hate conflict. We hate conflict as much as we hate getting our feelings hurt. So to bypass conflict we end up saying sorry simply to make things normal again. This isn’t a healthy way to take care of the situation at all.

    8. Some Times We’re Serious And Cut People Off

Sometimes we are serious and end up cutting people off for good. And no, it wasn’t all just because of a dumb little text or a dumb little side comment–it was because the other person didn’t have the humility to simply take two seconds to say sorry. Literally all we want is an apology. When we’re hurt that bad, we remember it.

    9. People Simply Don’t Learn

After a few months of knowing someone, you kind of understand what makes them tick and what doesn’t make them tick. For those who are friends with sensitive people, you should be able to understand that we have a few land mines embedded in the soil of our personality, but if you simply avoid doing just one or two things, life with us is going to be absolute gravy.

    10. We Sound Over-Emotional

I’m sure you got that just from reading this post. The truth is that we’re amazing friends to have. We’ll put in more effort than anyone else and we’ll also be much more thoughtful than anyone else. It goes both ways. You get the insane highs with the lows. And the fact is that you won’t even get the lows that much if you simply stop doing the two or three things that we don’t like!

    11. It’s Hard To Find Someone That Gets It

I have a few friends that get it. They understand that sometimes jokes need to be kept to a minimum, and that I have my stressful days every now and then. I hardly fight with these kinds of people. For the most part we have awesome times together with little to no conflict at all, while on the other hand I could have multiple conflicts a day with somebody else.

Again, it all depends on the personality of the people around us, and whether they even care about the sensitivity of other people.

What You Can Learn From Talking To A 90-Year Old

    2016-09-25-1474825017-4549814-L1010393.jpg
Pretty good shape for 90 – must be those G&Ts

Last week we celebrated my father-in-law’s 90th birthday.

There was a time when even getting to 90 was a major achievement, and if someone were lucky enough to make it to 90, they were generally frail, wheelchair bound and barely aware of the celebration going on around them.

I remember when my great grandmother hit 90. She was in a nursing home, bent over, in a wheelchair. She barely knew where she was, or who she was. That was some time ago.

For my father-in-law, Ken Pattenden, nothing could be further from the truth. The man still stands a lean and wiry six foot plus (as I am only 5’6″, I find this alone intimidating), has a full head of hair, a crushing handshake, an athlete’s build and more than all his marbles. I suppose it’s a tribute to genetics and clean living.

In any event, to celebrate the event, we all gathered in one of those massive old English country houses (did I mention that he lives in the UK?), and gathered the family for a weekend long party.

Ken was born in 1926, (you don’t have to be a math major to have figured that one out), one year before Charles Lindbergh became the first person to fly across the Atlantic. Lindbergh’s flight took 33½ hours in a tiny, one-seater, single engine plane made of wood and cloth, lacking even a front window. It was hailed as the ‘wonder of the world’.

Our trans-Atlantic flight took about 6 hours. We slept most of the way in the reclining beds and we watched a movie. They also served us two meals. Lindbergh brought along some sandwiches.

The world has changed a lot since 1927, when Lindbergh made his historic flight. Sometimes, we lose sight of that.

This remarkable transformation, all of it, took place within my father-in-law’s lifetime.

At dinner, I asked Ken about his experiences in the Second World War. He served in the British navy, assigned to Alexandria, in Egypt. At that time, Britain was still the British Empire and Britain ruled one-quarter of the world’s surface and also ruled one-quarter of the world’s population. Today, they are down to a few islands, and maybe Scotland, if they stay lucky.

But, prior to the war and signing up with the Navy, Ken had grown up and lived in London. This was during the Blitz, the German bombing of the city, and he recounted that as well – walking past houses that had been simply blown to oblivion overnight, and never knowing when or if you were going to get hit.

As we chatted, his wife of 60 plus years, Anne, who was sitting next to him also joined in.

She recalled that as a child in a small English village, they had no running water. Her mother had to go to the well in the center of the village and fill jugs each day. They had no central heating – all of the heat, and the cooking, was provided by an open fire. They had no indoor plumbing, but rather an outhouse behind the house. And no electricity, at least in the earliest days. They had no refrigerator, but instead an ice box that would, when it was available, be stocked with a block of ice to keep food cool.

She remembered the first car in the village, the first phone. She went on to become a head teacher. Ken became an accountant.

The transitions in the course of their lives, from the time they were born until the present is, well, mind-boggling. The changes they have seen and personally experienced represent a transformation so massive that, frankly, personal computers and iPhones (he is quite good with his), which we think of as major are, in fact, minor events.

When Ken and Anne were born, the world was, in many ways, far closer to what it had been for more than 500 years in the past, maybe a thousand. Most transport was done by animal power or walking. Agriculture was largely driven by animal power as well. Modern medicine was virtually unknown. You could die of a simple infection. Penicillin only came into public use in 1942! Last year Ken had laser cataract surgery and a few years before, an artificial replacement knee.

Automobiles, airplanes, telephones, refrigeration, running water, central heating, electricity, modern medicine, television, radio – the changes that their one lifetime has encompassed was probably the greatest transformation that any generation has ever seen, or for that matter, is ever likely to see.

We like to complain that ‘things are bad’. This is particularly true in this election cycle. Things are terrible. Things have never been worse.

What we are lacking is a sense of history.

Talk to a 90 year old the next chance you get. I think you will see that things are not quite so bad after all.

WASHINGTON – Taxpayers are now picking up most of Donald Trump’s air travel costs, unnecessarily spending millions of dollars because he insists on flying aboard his luxury 757 instead of a practical plane.

And because the GOP presidential nominee owns both the company that owns the jetliner and the one that operates it, some percentage of that taxpayer money is likely winding up as profit in Trump’s personal bank account.

The bombastic businessman has often bragged about the comforts of his ride, with its full bedroom, shower and 24-karat gold-plated bathroom fixtures. But because it seats so few passengers, Trump’s Secret Service agents appear to make up more than half of the plane’s flight manifests. And that means taxpayers are now legally required to pick up the majority of its staggering running costs.

Over the first three months of this year, after Trump asked for and received Secret Service protection, the agency’s payments to his campaign accounted for 48 percent of the $ 1.7 million that it paid Tag Air Inc., the candidate’s company that operates the aging jet.

Over June, July and August, as Trump became the GOP nominee and his security detail grew, the agency’s payments to the campaign made up 78 percent of the $ 1.3 million that it paid to Tag Air, according to The Huffington Post’s review of Federal Election Commission filings.

Politico, which first reported these payments, put the total the Secret Service paid to the Trump campaign at $ 1.6 million. But a closer look at campaign finance filings shows that the U.S. Secret Service covered more than $ 2.3 million of the $ 3.8 million Trump’s campaign has paid Tag Air in 2016.

That figure is on pace to top $ 3 million by Election Day on Nov. 8 – a total that would be nearly double what taxpayers spent to fly Secret Service agents around with 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney.

The difference: Romney did what every other non-incumbent presidential candidate has done in recent history and chartered an airliner on which staff, Secret Service and the traveling press corps all flew together, thereby driving down the cost for everyone.

“It’s eye-opening, I guess,” said Bob Biersack, who spent three decades at the FEC before joining the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. “Part of the Trump phenomenon.”

This is a public perception thing. At some point, people will begin to say, ‘Wait a minute: this is ridiculous.’
Bob Biersack, Center for Responsive Politics

Biersack said the payments do not appear to be illegal and that the former reality TV show host was not likely to care about appearances. He pointed to the many tax breaks Trump’s businesses have aggressively sought over the years. “This is not the first time he’s used government assets to his own advantage, right?” he added.

Both the Secret Service and the FEC said election regulations do not allow any leeway for how the agency is to reimburse campaigns for travel. Trump’s campaign did not respond to queries from HuffPost about the matter.

The $ 2.3 million the Secret Service spent to fly with Trump is only slightly less than the $ 2.6 million the agency has paid to the campaign of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton ― even though she has had the agency’s protection for twice as long as her Republican opponent.

Clinton, as the spouse of a former president, has had Secret Service protection since the start of her campaign in April 2015, whereas Trump asked for and received protection late last year. What’s more, some of the agency’s payments to the former secretary of state’s campaign cover travel with former President Bill Clinton when he has been on the campaign trail.

The Democratic candidate chartered a 737 that carries Clinton, her traveling staff, Secret Service detail and the traveling press corps in the past month, which should hold down the agency’s travel costs with her for the final two months of the campaign.

The last Republican candidate did the same thing in the final months of 2012. Romney’s chartered McDonnell-Douglas MD-83 was only seven feet shorter than Trump’s Boeing 757, but was configured essentially like a standard airliner and could carry some 150 passengers, even with a more spacious first-class section for Romney and his top staff.

In contrast, Trump’s 757, which he purchased from Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen in 2011, boasts a lounge with a 57-inch television and home theater sound, a master bedroom appointed with silk wall coverings and a guest room with a mohair couch that converts to a bed. It can, however, only seat 43 people and it appears not to carry even that many on the campaign trail, based on the number aboard recent flights.

On a brief flight this month on which Trump invited a small group of reporters aboard, there were only about 20 passengers, not counting the crew. Nearly half appeared to be Secret Service agents.

FEC rules require that Secret Service agents pay a “pro-rata share of the travel” to the campaign. So if agents on any given leg make up three quarters of the passengers, the U.S. Government is required to pay three quarters of the cost to fly Trump’s luxury liner.

What that figure is precisely for a given amount of time is known by the Trump campaign, but cannot be determined through the few public documents on file that describe Tag Air.

However, a 757-200 similar to Trump’s can be chartered for about $ 13,000 per hour. Based on fuel consumption rates for that plane, as much as $ 8,000 of that is burned each hour in the air, more if the trip is a series of short hops. Maintenance, food, landing fees and crew salaries add many hundreds of dollars more per hour.

How much the plane generates in profit for Trump after subtracting these costs might be deduced from his tax returns, but he has refused to release those. Trump said he is under IRS audit and that his lawyers have told him it would be unwise to release the returns until this is finished.

And as pricey as his plane is to fly, he makes his travel even more expensive by insisting on returning to New York City at the end of each day so he can sleep in his own bed in Trump Tower’s penthouse. Flying home, rather than overnighting in the next city on the campaign schedule, typically adds three to four hours of flying time per day, translating to $ 27,000 to $ 36,000 per day in higher flight costs.

Those higher costs, though, are being borne in large measure by taxpayers, particularly since the expansion of Trump’s Secret Service detail upon his officially winning the nomination.

How much the plane generates in profit for Trump after subtracting these costs might be deduced from his tax returns, but Trump has refused to release those.

Trump paid Tag Air $ 2.1 million to fly his plane around to campaign events in 2015. The money came from the checks he was writing to fund his campaign, as well as from the sale of “Make America Great Again” hats and other campaign souvenirs. Not a dime came from taxpayers.

This year has been a completely different story, first with the availability of Secret Service payments to defray his travel costs, and then with a flood of donor money following his signing of a joint fundraising deal with the Republican National Committee in May.

Trump’s use of Republican donors’ money at his own businesses since he signed that deal has been previously documented by news outlets including HuffPost. He sent his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach a check for $ 423,000 the very day the fundraising agreement was signed. In all, some $ 600,000 flowed from the Trump campaign to Trump properties that day.

He also increased the rent that his campaign pays at Trump Tower by a factor of five after signing the RNC deal, from $ 35,458 in April to $ 169,758 by July. That higher rent translates to a per-square-foot cost several times higher than what the Clinton campaign pays for its headquarters in Brooklyn.

This lavish spending, though, came at the expense of donors who willingly gave money to Trump. The Secret Service payments to fly on Trump’s glitzy but inefficient plane hit taxpayers, potentially creating problems for him if public anger translates into a drop in support, the Center for Responsive Politics’ Biersack said.

“The issue is that he’s chosen that particular plane,” Biersack said, adding that FEC commissioners likely never contemplated that a candidate would choose such an extravagant mode of transportation. Nor did anyone guess that taxpayers could wind up on the hook if it did happen, Biersack added. “It was never anticipated that the proportion of campaign travelers would be so heavily tilted toward federal officials.”

“This is a public perception thing,” he continued. “At some point, people will begin to say, ‘Wait a minute: this is ridiculous.’”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liarrampant xenophoberacistmisogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims ― 1.6 billion members of an entire religion ― from entering the U.S.

Vital Lessons Learned From The Chelsea Bombing From A Chelsea Psychologist

The following post was created for Self-Therapy Month at Techealthiest. This is Part One.

When frightening events like the Chelsea bombing and the additional planting of nine other bombs from New Jersey to New York occur, we have no choice but to create a mental file in which to place our thoughts, feelings and images associated with the attack.

It has to be stored in your memory one way or another.

Those of us who live or work in New York City have been more directly affected by this nerve-shaking attack, but its explosive effects are, without a doubt, far-reaching, as news, commentary and images have been repeatedly catapulted from the media toward our eyes and ears, which essentially forces us to make sense of what happened.

At worst, you’ve been vicariously traumatized by the bombing (or directly traumatized if you were on 23rd Street that Saturday night). The more common reaction among is to be shaken and disturbed in the days following the bombing, followed by a few weeks of talking about the bombing with your social and work circles.

Social media essentially guarantees that you’ll have to grapple with disturbing thoughts about the attack, but for how long will  these thoughts linger in your mind?

This leads me to the question I’ve been pondering since the event occurred: What is considered a “healthy” way to reflect upon the Chelsea bombing way after the event, as well other terror attacks that have occurred (and God forbid might happen again)?

Here are four things to be remembered about the attack that will promote health and personal responsibility.

    1) Use the memory of this event to remind you of all that you currently have, most notably things that money can’t buy.

You actually are rich because you have everything you need right now. Dare to be more thankful than you’ve been of late. Let the memory of the terror attack spark a feeling of gratitude toward the people in life who are invested in your happiness AND the people who don’t seem invested in your happiness.

It’s just too easy to lose touch with what matters most. Life can change in a split second. Don’t forget that but it’s not healthy to think about this idea all of the time because it can turn to anxiety if it becomes an obsession.  See this horrible event as a beautiful opportunity to be reminded of all that you have, especially your freedom, friends, health, family or whatever matters most to you.

    2) Think twice…three times…a thousand times about the consequences of spreading hatred before you utter a single word.

There are two hugely important points here. First, on a personal level, when you spread hatred, you’re killing the cells in your body. You lose. A part of you dies. The spread of word venom is an artificial way to expand your ego by diminishing others. It certainly makes you depressed and it pushes people away from you, except for people who either are as angry as you are or whose lives are devoid of meaning and are looking for something to believe in.

Second, the expression of hatred on the web can cause real harm to people. There are people out there who feed off of hatred. Keep in mind that social media creates a thunderclap that spreads like wildfire through the web. For people who feel powerless, this is a place to gain a synthetic sense of power. Hatred on social media spreads like cancer, and makes everyone sick.

Please know that if you’re constantly ranting on Facebook about Trump or Clinton or any person or group with whom you have a major problem, most of your “friends” are viewing you as crazy. They probably contemplated defriending you, but they’re either lazy or they don’t want to have to randomly face your scariness in the supermarket or at your next high school reunion. Instead, they’ve subtly unfollowed you and connected your current venomous behavior to a past memory of you being something negative. Please know that I’m referring to the expression of hatred, not anger, the latter of which can often be healthy and productive to express.

    3) The collective American attention span is shrinking at an alarming rate.

The speed at which information travels makes us more likely to be satiated at a faster rate. In other words, you’ve probably been bombarded by news of the bombing so much that you eventually either tune it out completely or you go numb when you hear about it. The danger here is that you’re likely to miss the value inherent in remembering what happened and what could have been.

How do you counter a natural tendency for your emotional reactions toward the Chelsea bombing to become watered down as a result of social media satiation? At minimum, make a reminder to mention the bombing at your next major family, religious or other gathering. Talk about the event in terms of how it affected you and what you now feel thankful for. Another strategy is to find a way to express your thoughts and feelings about the event though a creative modality that you repeat even months after the disturbing event. For example, if you dabble in acrylic art, create a series of paintings over time which serve as an expression of your inner experience of the incident.

    4) Crowdsourcing is a weapon against terror.

Yes, social media (and the media in general) spread hatred, false beliefs and dangerous calls to action faster than the world as ever known. How little it takes for an individual to incite violence on the web is scary, but various forms media can also (obviously) be used to spread good and inform people of important developments. Case in point: the capture of Ahmad Khan Rahimi, the Chelsea bomber. Harry Bains had been watching CNN, which allowed him to recognize Rahimi who was sleeping next to Bain’s bar in Linden, New Jersey. This is loosely an example of how crowdsourcing can aid in spreading valuable information to combat terror.

Who knows what the next incident will be? Use the internet as a way to inform people if something suspicious is happening in front of you. You have the loudest megaphone ever created in the form of Twitter and Facebook.

There’s much more to say here, but it’s time to digest and return to this topic soon. This essentially reflects the optimal strategy. Ponder the horrible events that occurred. Learn from it. Vow to appreciate life more at least in the short term. Move on but return to it at a later date. Just don’t forget.

Stay tuned for Part Two of my lessons learned from the Chelsea bombing.

Integrator Alert: Demand Time (and Changes) in the FDA’s Move Limiting Access and Increasing Costs of Dietary Supplements

Removal of many dietary supplements from the market. Increased prices for patients and consumers. Limited access to key nutritional tools for practitioners who have used them safely for decades.

Charges like these against a proposal of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have propelled many Paul Revere rides through the alternative and integrative medicine community. One wonders with blasts against the FDA if it is “wolf” that is being cried.

    2016-09-24-1474737510-3070699-FDA213X110.gif

Best assessment: not this time. I received an urgent email from long-time Integrator adviser Michael Levin of Health Business Strategies. Levin’s executive roles over the past 4 decades have included positions with pharma companies, medical device firms, as well as supplements firms. He’s a level headed analyst. He pointed to a perspective of the Council for Responsible Nutrition:

“Collectively the draft FDA Guidance can be viewed as a variety of maneuvers by the FDA to re-characterize as many dietary supplements as possible as [New Dietary Ingredients] and then propose a standard of proof for their safety that few manufacturers would be able to meet; one that Congress and the courts clearly did not intend to be applied to dietary supplements.”

Urge the FDA to add a 120 day extension to the comment period

At issue is Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376: “Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry.” The present comment period ends October 11. Levin urges all organizations with a stake in the industry to make their voices heard.

The first step: request a 120 day extension to allow a regulation of this importance to be thoroughly vetted. A draft letter of request is affixed below.

    2016-09-24-1474753206-6563239-CRNJointHeader120611400x105.jpg

CRN wasn’t acting alone. It signed a joint statement with the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the Consumer Healthcare Products Association (CHPA), the Natural Products Association (NPA), and the United Natural Products Alliance (UNPA). The group of organizations called for “an overhaul” of the guidance. Best estimates are that compliance will cost the industry $ 2-billion to $ 6-billion a year. These costs that will be passed through to patients and consumers.

Levin is realistic about the challenges the guidance poses for anyone not intimately involved with manufacturing and sourcing processes. He warns that “this highly technical regulatory guidance document is very complex.” One example: if the guidance were adopted, a manufacturing change will trigger new dietary ingredient (NDI) status which, due to routine manufacturing processes, “essentially will put most botanical extracts into NDI territory.” If so, this would add substantially to regulatory burden, and cost.

For these reasons Levin, pictured below, “encourage(s) all practitioner-stakeholders to request a 120 day extension on the comment period (now due on 10/11/16) to allow a careful review.” In his view, “medical doctors, pharmacists, naturopathic doctors and other healthcare practitioners should review this guidance and consider how it may impact their ability to prescribe safe nutritional interventions to help their patients.”

    2016-09-24-1474754646-3300244-levinmichael2015.jpg

Levin urges all who are affiliated with professional organizations or institutions linked in any way to supplement use to respond – and also send copies of their letters to US Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Maria Cantwell (D-WA)

If guaranteeing safety is the FDA’s primary concern, attacking the dietary supplement manufacturing is roughly like the IRS seeking to balance the budget by auditing people who make under $ 50,000 a year. With a significant percent of the estimated 251,000 medical deaths a year linked to pharmaceutical use, maybe a better use of the FDA’s team on this project would be to set them to mining in a deeper vein of public harm than to making more expensive the agents people are using instead of pharmaceuticals.

Bottom line: Levin’s call for an extension makes sense. No need for the FDA to rush on this one. Get your request for an extension and comments in!

Re: Docket Number FDA-2011-D-0376 – Request for 120 Day Extension for Comment Period (“Dietary Supplements: New Dietary Ingredient Notifications and Related Issues: Guidance for Industry”)

This is to respectfully request a 120 Day extension for comment period on this draft guidance.

As written, the guidance raises very serious questions about the future availability of safe dietary supplements recommended by healthcare practitioners to help patients maintain and improve their health.

Physicians, doctors and pharmacists use nutrient repletion and targeted nutritional interventions to improve the health status of the patients we serve. In so doing, our patients can live healthier lives. Evidence also exists that these nutritional interventions may reduce healthcare costs, safely.

Since this guidance is highly technical and appears to have a high likelihood of impacting the practice of nutritional medicine, we simply need more time to study, understand and consider how this guidance might impact our ability to help the patients we serve. The issues of manufacturing changes, ODIs vs NDIs, the position on synthetic botanicals, the cost of redundancy of NDINs and how that might impact innovation, product availability, consumer prices and ingredient availability are some of the issues that need careful exploration. Products on formularies will need to be reviewed to determine how this guidance, if adopted, would impact their availability.

Please extend the comment period by (at least) 120 days (to February 11, 2017) so that we may evaluate the impact this important guidance may have on public health and safety, in general, and the patients we serve, in particular.

    Thank you.

    Sincerely

Weekend Roundup: When Better Angels Lose Their Wings

In an enlightened dialogue, the Dalai Lama tells Archbishop Desmond Tutu that his years as a refugee have taught him to identify with the plight of so many others today. “This recognition that we are all connected,” says Tutu, “is the birth of empathy and compassion.” However noble this sentiment, the world can look a lot different to a German burgher trying to provide for his family and preserve the character of his community than it does to two religious leaders conversing in the misty hills of Dharamsala. As much as we may feel global, we react local.

At the Global Progress 2016 conference in Montreal recently, Germany’s vice chancellor, Sigmar Gabriel, concisely captured the backlash roiling politics in his country and the rest of Europe. “As the average citizens see it,” he said, “first the authorities spent billions on bailing out the banks, and now are spending generously on refugees from Syria and elsewhere — meanwhile cutting back on pensions, unemployment payments and other social benefits through austerity policies. ‘What about us?’ they ask.” That attitude may not make saints of citizens, but neither does it make them sinners. As German Chancellor Angela Merkel is discovering through repeated blows at the polls, when the wages of war outstrip the means of empathy, people retreat into their own suffering and better angels lose their wings. Bad faith results from good intentions if the capacity to fulfill moral claims is lacking.

Writing from Germany, Tobias Lill worries that if Merkel does not take action soon to relieve the anxiety of her citizens, the anti-immigrant Alternative for Germany party could soon arrive in power. “When vast swaths of the country have lost faith in establishment parties,” he says, “it can quickly lead to crisis.” The key to avoiding such a crisis, he argues, is providing better support for working families.

The refugee crisis was front and center this week at the United Nations General Assembly. As Willa Frej reports, U.S. President Barack Obama convened a summit of leaders from more than 50 nations who pledged $ 4.5 billion in aid to groups helping refugees to find education and work. The U.N. Development Programme administrator, Helen Clark, calls for a greater focus on “prevention and mediation” of conflicts before they turn into full fledged wars while “promoting inclusive economic growth and sustainable livelihoods” in the troubled nations from which refugees and migrants flee. Mercy Corps’ Neal Keny-Guyer argues that “conflict causes violent extremism more than violent extremism causes conflict.” Christine Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, outlines the enormous economic costs of conflict in the Mideast and North Africa, stressing the importance of keeping “core government institutions functioning in times of conflict” in order “to maintain life-saving services.” Gordon Brown, the former British prime minister and U.N. special envoy for global education, is concerned that a “lost generation” is in the making as an estimated 265 million displaced children worldwide are out of school.

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, whose country has been one of the primary targets of Donald Trump’s xenophobic campaign, argues that agreements reached at the U.N. this week “must aim at strengthening the state’s capabilities for the protection of migrants and their human rights, while recognizing their contributions to economic development and achieving their social inclusion, in order to eradicate intolerance and racism.”

WorldPost Middle East Correspondent Sophia Jones, in Istanbul, and Danae Leivada, in Athens, report on the deplorable conditions at the Moria refugee detention center on the island of Lesbos, which was engulfed in fire this week. The mayor, they report, has not ruled out the possibility that the blaze was ignited by members of the neo-fascist Golden Dawn party, whom Greek journalists have also accused of attacking them at an anti-refugee protest, HuffPost Greece’s Marialena Perpiraki reports.

Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament, writes that even though the U.K. and the European Union are parting ways, they can still find a way to work together. But, he warns, “We cannot shape a new European future at such a time of fragility by indulging in nostalgia — none of us, including the U.K., can bring back the past.”

Anastasya Manuilova reports from Moscow on why Russian sanctions against Western food imports has not dented popular support for President Vladimir Putin, as demonstrated once again in elections this week. She cites a key study that says most Russians perceive Putin’s import ban as “a sign of strength” in standing up to Europe and the U.S..

Foreign Affairs Reporter Akbar Shahid Ahmed reports on a speech at the Harvard Club in New York by Turkey’s first lady, Emine Erdogan, about the recent coup attempt. She asked Americans to imagine how they would react if the Brooklyn Bridge was seized by terrorists.

Writing from Beijing, Wang Jisi, one of China’s leading experts on America, argues that the “new normal” of U.S.-China relations is an ongoing contest over framing the new rules of a world order in transition. Admiral Harry Harris, commander of the U.S. Pacific Command, makes no bones about his objective of military domination of the western Pacific. “If we have to fight tonight,” he says, “I don’t want it to be a fair fight. If it’s a knife fight, I want to bring a gun. If it’s a gun fight, I want to bring in the artillery — and all of our partners with their artillery.” Writing from Manila, Richard Javed Heydarian charts the latest antics of the “fiercely independent-minded” president, Rodrigo Duterte. Heydarian notes that on a trip to Jakarta, the president was seen as “criticizing America and its lack of commitment to the Philippines, while praising Chinese assistance to the Philippines.” That has made some wonder, he says, “whether there would be irreversible consequences for bilateral relations [with the U.S.], among the oldest and most intimate in human history.”

In the wake of the New York and New Jersey bombings, Afghan-born suspect Ahmad Rahami’s father said he had told federal agents about his son’s interest in terrorist organizations a few years ago. Daniel Koehler explains why he believes the United States needs “deradicalization” counseling that provides concerned parents like Rahami and authorities with an option to derail a terrorist attack other than prematurely calling the police or keeping a young person’s unsettling turn a secret.

Ed Dolan explains why business leaders seem wary of a Donald Trump presidency. “The biggest corporations,” he surmises, “are trembling at the prospect that this populist outsider would break the cozy relationship they have had with government for as long as they can remember.”

Dominique Mosbergen reports on another focus at the U.N. this week. “The General Assembly is meeting to tackle a global health crisis that’s estimated to ‘kill more people than cancer‘ does now in the coming decades,” she writes. “Antibiotic resistance causes the deaths of at least 700,000 people annually. That number is expected to balloon to 10 million by 2050.” She also reports from Singapore on the staggering health toll the ever more regular haze is taking on populations across Southeast Asia.

Finally, our Singularity series this week looks at an experiment in which a man’s thoughts are able through induced chemical reactions to control nanobots inside a cockroach.

My Stepmom Died And That’s Not Okay

I’ve been having some health problems.

In order to resolve them, I did what any good adult would do: I went to the doctor. It turns out, I’m stressed. I’m stressed in the kind of way that makes your eye twitch for no apparent reason and makes you cry when you drop your fork on the ground (it had one last bite of broccoli on it, okay?).

My doctor asked me about my life and what I have experienced in the last year. I droned on about my engagement (yay!), moving to a new city, planning a wedding, financial troubles, health problems, and the passing of my stepmother.

    “You said your mother-in-law died?”

    “No, my stepmom.”

“Oh. I was about to say…that is awful! Not that losing your stepmother isn’t awful, but…”

My stepmom passed away seven months ago. This is not the first time I have experienced a less-than-sympathetic reaction. This is not the first time I have had to stifle my tears and reciprocate a stranger’s words with a forced smile. Our society has an innate bias towards the word stepmother.

    I blame Cinderella. Thanks, Disney.

I have to be honest here: we bickered a lot. She was stubborn. I was stubborn. We fought, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love her. It doesn’t mean that it hurt any less when my father called me on that otherwise beautiful Thursday morning and told me she was gone. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to dig deeper than I ever thought possible, to find strength I didn’t know I had, to organize a funeral and finalize all of the details so my dad didn’t have to.

I haven’t fully mourned her loss yet. I don’t know if I have it in me to. She has been in my life since I was a tiny human running around with my blanket and sucking my thumb. With my wedding less than two months away, it’s finally starting to hit me that she wont be present. There are certain things that have always meant more to me when she would say them. Hearing her tell me that I’m beautiful has always been one of them. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you expect your biological parents to tell you you’re beautiful. Maybe it means something different when it comes from a “step.” Knowing that I wont hear those words from her on that day stings. It stings the way a stranger’s words sting when they assume I’m fine because I only lost a stepparent. I was only her stepdaughter.

The loss of a stepparent is confusing. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to feel sad because she wasn’t actually my mom. Sometimes I feel like I’m betraying my actual mom by feeling sad.

And, what may be the worst of all feelings, sometimes I feel like I don’t get to feel sad because at times we simply didn’t get along.

I know I’m not the only one who has experienced (or is experiencing) something similar. I know I’m not the only stepchild who has experienced this kind of a loss. I want to change the narrative. I want people to understand the complex range of emotions that can accompany the death of a stepparent when both biological parents are still very active in a child’s (or adult’s) life.

I am blessed. I have an amazing mom and I have a phenomenal dad. I also have a kick-ass stepfather whom I love dearly. Just because I have all of these things, that doesn’t mean that my stepmother’s death should be diluted. I am not deserving of less time to grieve or less time to process what happened simply because my bio parents are amazing.

What I am deserving of is a little bit of compassion.

    It has been seven months.

And I think I have finally started to grieve.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

‘Love Hormone’ Oxytocin May Enhance Feelings Of Spirituality

The same hormone that helps mothers bond with their newborns may also enhance feelings of spirituality, a new study suggests.

It’s been called the “love hormone” and the “cuddle chemical,” but doctors and scientists know it as oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland during times of love and bonding.

A recent study spearheaded by Duke University social psychologist Patty Van Cappellen found that participants who received doses of oxytocin reported a greater sense of spirituality than those who received a placebo.

“Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Van Cappellen said in a statement.

For research purposes, the study defined spirituality as a sense of connection to a higher power or to the world that gives meaning to people’s lives.

Eighty-three men between the ages of 35 to 64 participated in the study. Each participant received either a dose of oxytocin or a placebo, administered through a nasal spray.

Researchers found that those who received oxytocin were more likely to report feeling that spirituality was important in their lives and that life has meaning and purpose. They were also more likely to give higher ratings to statements like, “All life is interconnected” and “There is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people.”

Participants also listened to a guided meditation, after which those who received oxytocin reported experiencing more positive emotions like awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love and serenity than those who received a placebo.

The study’s results held true regardless of whether the participant reported belonging to an organized religion or not, and they remained consistent a week after the hormone and placebo were administered.

Van Cappellen noted that the results of the study could only be applied to men given that the research subjects were all males. Oxytocin produces slightly different results in men and women, she said, and thus further studies should investigate the hormone’s role on women’s spirituality.

Even among men, the effect might not be uniform. The study also showed that oxytocin has a stronger spiritual effect on people with a particular variant of the CD38 gene, which regulates the release of oxytocin from hypothalamic neurons in the brain.

“Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors,” Van Cappellen said. “However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe.”

But Van Cappellen isn’t alone in her findings. Previous studies have shown oxytocin to have a profound impact on spirituality, as well as generosity, altruism, and empathy. Oxytocin has also been shown to play a role in experiences of spiritual transformation.

But it has a dark side, too.

A 2010 study of Dutch males out of the University of Amsterdam found that male subjects who received a dose of oxytocin were more likely to express ethnocentric prejudice and xenophobia than those who received a placebo.

Luckily, spirituality isn’t bound by hormones alone. It’s how we choose to define our spirituality ― whether as a connection to all creation on our global home or loyalty only to those who look, act and believe as we do ― that makes all the difference.

Judge Who Ended New York’s Stop-And-Frisk Policy Slams Trump’s Idea To Bring It Back

NEW YORK ― Shira Scheindlin, the federal judge who ruled three years ago that the New York City Police Department’s aggressive stop-and-frisk practices were unconstitutional, had a few words about Donald Trump’s proposal to institute a similar policy nationwide.

Trump’s idea sounded “so retrograde and so non-commonsensical,” she told The Huffington Post in an interview while on vacation.

“You really wonder about this man’s level of knowledge,” added Scheindlin, who stepped down from the bench in May and is now of counsel at a New York law firm.

At a town hall event on Wednesday, Trump said he “would do stop and frisk” to address crime in black communities. He claimed that the tactic had “worked incredibly well” in New York ― evidently unaware of Scheindlin’s ruling that the way the NYPD did it actually amounted to racial profiling.

“Why would you call for instituting a failed policy across the United States?” said Scheindlin.

Trump also didn’t seem to grasp that as president he would have little power to micromanage policing, which is chiefly the states’ domain.

Floyd v. City of New York was a long-running class action case charging that the NYPD’s practice of stopping, questioning and frisking thousands of New Yorkers without reasonable suspicion ― the vast majority of them black or Latino ― violated the Constitution. The 10-week trial in Scheindlin’s court offered dramatic testimony and thousands of exhibits.

The judge then issued a 198-page ruling that served as a damning indictment of the city’s police department ― and then-Mayor Michael Bloomberg and then-NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly ― for targeting communities of color under a policy that did little to curb crime or violence.

“The city’s highest officials have turned a blind eye to the evidence that officers are conducting stops in a racially discriminatory manner,” Scheindlin wrote. “In their zeal to defend a policy that they believe to be effective, they have willfully ignored overwhelming proof that the policy of targeting ‘the right people’ is racially discriminatory.”

Thanks to that decision, the NYPD now has a court-ordered monitor to make sure that updated guidelines for police stops and initiatives such as body-worn cameras are being implemented responsibly and with input from community groups.

Reflecting on her ruling today ― and Trump’s praise for what it condemned ― Scheindlin still maintains that stop-and-frisk tactics served “no law enforcement benefit” in New York and “did not reduce crime in any way.”

As for the Republican presidential nominee’s unsupported notion that such a policy would somehow reduce gun violence by getting firearms off the streets, Scheindlin said the evidence collected in the Floyd trial told a very different story.

“Very few guns were seized ― 1.5 percent of all the stops resulted in the seizure of any contraband, which is a very tiny number,” she said. “But on top of that, we have no idea if it deterred folks from carrying guns.”

The more the judge pondered Trump’s proposal and how he might make it work ― could he, say, use the U.S. Department of Justice to condition federal funding on local police embracing stop and frisk? ― the more the exercise seemed like a fool’s errand.

“I doubt that he thought it through to that extent,” she said.

It may help to know you’re not alone. An estimated 18 percent of all American adults suffer from an anxiety disorder of some kind, ranging from social anxiety disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder and general anxiety. There’s a good chance you’ve gone on a date with someone who’s had a panic attack over the thought of dinner and a movie.

There are ways to cope with anxiety, though, and meet someone worthwhile. Below, experts on anxiety share their best advice for managing your worries and stress so you can successfully get through a date.

One technique that is well-known in anxiety treatment is the idea of exposure: The more you deal with things that stress you out, the better equipped you are to handle them. If dating feels particularly nerve-racking, start slow by putting yourself in situations where you can practice small talk, said Keith Humphreys, a professor of psychiatry at Stanford University.

“Go to any social event ― a dance, a church picnic or a hangout after work ― and set a goal of talking to a stranger who seems interesting for at least 10 minutes, without the pressure to ask anyone out,” he told The Huffington Post. “Taking the scary thing ― a real date ― off the table will give you security to practice your dating and conversational skills until you get more comfortable.”

Pay attention to the stories you’re telling yourself in anticipation of the date, said Jennifer Rollin, a psychotherapist in North Potomac, Maryland. Just because you think you’ll spend the whole night stuttering out of nervousness and mispronouncing menu items doesn’t mean that’s necessarily going to happen.

“When you view your thoughts as ‘just stories,’ you can distance yourself from the ones that are unhelpful,” she said. “Let’s say that you are thinking ‘I’m going to come across as insecure’ or ‘If people knew about my anxiety, no one would want to date me.’ Rather then judging yourself for having these thoughts, simply notice them and then determine whether that train of thought is helpful or unhelpful.”

When a thought is unproductive, filter it out and try to replace it with something more optimistic, Rollin recommended.

“For example, you might tell yourself, ‘No matter how this date goes, I am proud of myself for facing my anxiety and putting myself out there.’”

Try to see a healthy dose of stress as your friend when you’re dating, said Kimber Shelton, a psychologist based in Duncanville, Texas. A bit of nervous energy can give you the focus and motivation to get through the date. The key is to keep the date short so you don’t feel trapped.

“When stress is first activated we think, ‘I feel nervous, but I can do this!’ ― but that thought can be be temporary and short-lived,” she explained.

To that end, Shelton recommends scheduling dates of a reasonable length and meeting up in a familiar place ― your favorite coffee shop, for instance, or a nearby restaurant where you’re well versed in the menu.

“You want to just slightly push yourself out of your comfort zone,” she said.

Everyone dreads awkward silence on dates but when you have anxiety, you may feel a heightened need to “be on” around new people. You often feel tongue-tied, making even even basic conversation difficult.

To combat this kind of performance anxiety, Manhattan psychologist Chloe Carmichael recommends storing up a few conversation starters beforehand.

“Read some news stories before your date and choose a handful of topics that might come in handy ― something about the arts, the weather, sports, local news and world events,” she said. “Besides filling up the awkward silences, this will connect you to your date because current events are relevant to pretty much everyone.”

In anticipation of a date, it’s easy to get caught up in how the other person might perceive you. But instead of worrying about where you stand, psychologist Stacey Rosenfeld suggests flipping the script: How will they stack up in your estimation?

“Shift your focus to whether or not this is a suitable person for you to date, said Rosenfeld, who’s based in Coral Gables, Florida. “Focus on what you have in common, their chemistry with you and whether or not you’d like to see this person again.”

She added: “This can take a lot of the pressure off the meeting because you realize you have an active role in this process, rather than passively waiting to be accepted or not. This strategy works great for job interviews, too!”

When the date is over, put it to bed. You may feel tempted to mentally replay the awkward moments or lulls in conversations but resist that urge, said Shannon Kolakowski, a psychologist and author of Single, Shy, and Looking for Love: A Dating Guide for the Shy and Socially Anxious.

“Rather than beat yourself up or focus on awkward moments, go through the date recalling fun moments and good conversation,” she said. “Did you both find yourself laughing or did your date compliment you, or vice versa?

If the date truly lacked any moments of connection, remind yourself it wasn’t your fault, Kolakowski said: “Sometimes people just don’t click, and that’s OK.”

This Teen Is Almost 8 Feet Tall — And Still Growing

At 7 feet 8 inches, Broc Brown definitely sticks out in a crowd, and he’s only going to get bigger.

Brown’s family knew something was up at a young age: He was 5-foot-2 in kindergarten, according to his mother, Darci Elliot.

“When he got into middle school he was around 6 feet tall, and by high school he was 7 feet tall,” Elliot told Barcroft TV. “It’s a genetic disorder and there’s nothing that can stop him from growing – I don’t know if he will ever stop.”

Brown, 19, grows an astounding six inches a year because of a rare genetic disorder called Sotos syndrome, or cerebral gigantism. The condition reportedly affects 1 in 14,000 newborns, but the National Institutes of Health says the number may be closer to 1 in 5,000, since not everyone who has it is properly diagnosed.

Kids with the syndrome tend to grow quickly in younger years and have unusually large heads, but their adult height is often in the normal range. That makes Brown a rarity among rarities.

Other symptoms include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and an explosive temper.

Brown has both, his mother said.

“When he gets mad, he’s mad. It wouldn’t take him two seconds to pop a hole in the wall ― it could be very dangerous if he wasn’t on medication and able to be calmed,” Elliot told Barcroft TV. “But overall, he is a big softie, his heart is as big as his body.”

Brown is in constant pain because of other issues, including curvature of the spine and narrowing of the spinal cord. He was born with only one kidney, which means he can’t take painkillers.

“It kind of feels like a big tennis racket has gone through my back,” he told Barcroft.

Dr. John Pappas, director of NYU Clinical Genetic Services and associate professor of pediatrics at NYU Langone Medical Center, said there is no cure for Sotos syndrome and treatments address only the symptoms, not the cause.

“We don’t have a specific kind of medication that can control the overgrowth of protein,” Pappas told HuffPost.

Pappas, who hasn’t treated Brown, said factors beyond Sotos syndrome may be causing Brown’s non-stop growth.

The teen’s trajectory has been financially challenging for his family.

“There’s a lot of things that are hard, like finding shoes for him, finding clothes,” Elliot told local station WILX-TV in 2013. Nike helped by donating a pair of size 24 shoes.

Brown’s size has helped him reach a certain height of fame.

Previously, he held the Guinness World Record for tallest male under the age of 18. He outgrew that honor when he reached legal age. Kevin Bradford of Doral, Florida, who stands 7-feet-1, now holds that honor.

But if Brown continues to grow, he could soon be looking down at 8-foot-3 Sultan Kösen, the current owner of the tallest living person honor. Kösen stopped growing in 2012 at the tender age of 29.

Brown doesn’t seem concerned about being the world’s tallest man. He’d be happy with a normal, comfortable existence.

“I hopefully want to work for a sporting goods store or something like that, a cashier or something,” he said. “I just want to have my own job.”

    Donald Ducking The Press

As I write that headline, I have to wonder why we all haven’t been using the neologistic verb “Donald ducking” by this point in the presidential race. After all, a large part of Donald Trump’s campaign has been built on the foundation of him ducking questions and issues that he doesn’t want to talk about. He’s a master at the art, in fact. Consider just the birther issue — up until last Friday, Trump’s been successfully ducking the issue for the entire campaign. He never answered the basic question of Barack Obama’s birthplace, saying quite bluntly that he just didn’t want to talk about it. He got away with not talking about it for almost a year and a half. Donald ducked, and it worked.

But since his makeover into Trump 2.0 (now with TelePrompTer!), Donald hasn’t just been ducking the questions he doesn’t like, he’s been ducking answering any tough questions altogether. Earlier in the campaign season, Hillary Clinton was (quite rightly) derided by the press for not giving a press conference for nine solid months. She finally relented (as a part of her own campaign makeover), and now gives press conferences and answers questions from the press corps travelling with her on a regular basis. Trump, however, has moved in the opposite direction, and hasn’t given a press conference in almost two months now.

This is kind of extraordinary, because he used to hold press conferences all the time. He seemed to love the back-and-forth freewheeling nature of the events, even taunting the reporters at times. But now he hasn’t given one since the last week in July. I suppose it’s not all that surprising, since this period roughly matches up with the press suddenly waking up to its responsibility to vet both candidates equally (call it the post-Matt Lauer era). Much tougher questions have arisen around Trump, questions he quite likely doesn’t want to answer any more than the questions about his championing birtherism for so long.

The Trump Foundation is the prime example this week, as the Washington Post continues its very deep dive into Donald Trump’s charitable giving (or lack thereof). It seems the Trump Foundation gave over a quarter of a million dollars — of other people’s money, since Trump hasn’t given the foundation a dime for more than six years — to resolve lawsuits against Donald Trump himself. This could be a federal crime, amusingly named “self-dealing.” This revelation came after the news that the Trump Foundation had made an illegal campaign donation of $ 25,000 to a state attorney general who was considering taking Trump University to court — but who decided not to, after getting money from the Trump Foundation.

These are just the biggest revelations about the Trump Foundation, mind you — the Post has uncovered plenty of other questions Trump is not likely to want to answer either (Lester Holt, are you paying attention?). But even sticking to just the biggest stories, it’d be pretty easy for an enterprising reporter to frame the question to Trump in the following manner:

“Mr. Trump, the Washington Post has revealed that your namesake foundation has given over $ 250,000 to settle your personal legal problems. What interested me most — and, I suspect, what will interest the public as well — is that one of these payoffs happened because you essentially refused to make good on a golf bet. You offered a cool million bucks if anyone got a hole-in-one during a tournament held at one of your golf courses. A man hit a hole-in-one, but instead of ponying up, you stiffed him. You said that the hole somehow wasn’t long enough. He sued you to get you to make good on your promise, and you wound up paying only $ 158,000 — not to him, but to a charity he supported; and from your foundation’s funds, not from your own pocket. So my question is: why should the American people trust you as their president when you don’t even keep the promises you make on the golf course?”

This would nicely wrap the controversy up in a package that just about anyone could relate to. Wimping out on paying a bet (or a promise made on a golf course) is something few people see as an admirable quality, after all. It’s something that has happened to many average voters, in fact. Say what you want about Mitt Romney, but if Rick Perry had indeed taken him up on that infamous $ 10,000 bet, I would never have expected Romney to weasel out of paying off the bet if he lost. This is simply not true with Donald Trump.

The Trump campaign, quite obviously, doesn’t want Donald Trump to even have to face such questions. He’ll do interviews with friendly journalists guaranteed not only to just toss softball questions at him, but also guaranteed to not call him out on it when he ducks them. But he hasn’t faced the press en masse in almost two months. The campaign is probably smart to do so, since the less Trump talks to the press off the cuff, the fewer chances he has of lighting a bonfire of a controversy for them to report on (as used to regularly happen).

So from now on, it would behoove the media to ask all Trump surrogates who are willing to appear on camera the basic questions: “Why hasn’t Trump given a press conference in two months? What is he scared of?” Or, to put it in slightly more “animated” terms (as it were): “Why is Donald ducking?”

Why Your Environment Is Working Against You—And How To Fix It

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Did you know that the way we dress, our facial expressions, our posture, and the tone of our voice make up 93 percent of what we communicate to others?  Research pioneered by Dr. Albert Mehrabian shows that what we communicate non-verbally can be highly impactful. We are hardwired to listen to our senses without conscious thought, and this ability helps protect us from danger and saves us time making endless decisions throughout the day.

If we are so influenced by our senses, what else is subconsciously triggering our everyday decisions?

Lately, I’ve been trying to pay more attention to “nudges” in the built environment around us. The built environment includes the size and shape of our roads, parks, and buildings: these all drive our behavior. Specifically, I’ve been in search of ways the built environment can affect decisions we make about our health. What we see, hear, smell, taste, and feel impacts our actions—and emerging research in urban planning, occupational health, and behavioral science validates this. Here are just a few of the many ways to leverage the built environment to improve health outcomes:

    Nudges to encourage movement

Building location and access to public amenities can impact how much we move. For example, research shows that proximity to parks and other recreational facilities is consistently associated with higher levels of physical activity and healthier weight status among youth and adults. The same goes for proximity to public transit—there is a link between access to public transportation and physical activity since transit use typically involves walking to a bus or subway stop. In one study, train commuters walked an average of 30 percent more steps per day and were four times more likely to walk 10,000 steps per day than car commuters.

Several studies show that simply letting people know the health benefits of taking the stairs and showing their location (like putting a sign in the elevator lobby or using stair banners, like these) increases stair usage by 54 percent. Taking this a bit further, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a “StairWELL to Better Health”campaign in its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. They use music, art, an upgraded appearance, and motivational signage to nudge employees to use the stairs more often. (Check out their downloadable signs, and see “before” and “after” images of their stairwells.)

Nudges to encourage healthy eating habits

You may not have heard the term “choice architecture,” but you experience its impact every time you stand next to the candy display at a checkout counter. Choice architecture refers to the different ways in which choices can be presented to consumers and the impact of that presentation on consumer decision making.

For example, the number of choices presented, the manner in which attributes are described, and the presence of a “default” can all influence consumer choice. Many companies are using this strategy by reducing the number of unhealthy foods available in the workplace or by making them harder to find.  ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Brian Wansink, director of Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab and author of Mindless Eating, suggests a number of ways our eating behavior is significantly impacted by the way food is presented to us. For example, in some of his studies, people were 44 percent less likely to snack in kitchens that were tidy versus kitchen environments that were messy.

Keeping the kitchen clean is more than just a sanitation issue—it can affect how much we eat. In another study, Wansink found that people tend to eat less on plates that are 9-10 inches in diameter. People piled up food on larger plates, but felt “deprived” and went for a second helping when eating on smaller plates (around 6 inches in diameter). His other studies show that people are likely to serve themselves 20 percent less food on plates with “contrasting colors” to the food they are eating, e.g., white pasta on a red or blue plate. White breads and pastas on white plates? That is a recipe for “carb-loading”!

Nudges to reduce stress and improve well-being

We have a strong desire to be in and among nature. It’s only natural: for most of human history we spent all our time outdoors. This preference, often referred to biophilia, was introduced and popularized by E.O. Wilson, known as the “father of biodiversity.” Wilson suggests that there is an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems.

In Biophilic Design: Theory, Science and Practice, authors Stephen R. Kellert, Judith Heerwagen, and Martin Mador describe the importance of nature for human productivity:

“Nature is rife with sensory richness and variety in patterns, textures, light, and colors. All organisms respond with genetically programmed reflexes to the diurnal and seasonal patterns of sunlight and climate.”

Interestingly, biophilia-based design can be manifested in many ways. The most obvious way is to incorporate real plants, water, and natural views into buildings. Another way is to create “natural analogues” or use materials and patterns that evoke nature, such as artwork, ornamentation, biomorphic forms, or the use of natural materials. A third way to use biophilia is through configuration of space, by organizing interior environments or man-made outdoor landscapes, using similar to natural environments elements. In its paper “The Economics of Biophilia,” environmental consulting firm Terrapin Bright Green suggests:

“Over the last quarter century, case studies have documented the advantage of biophilic experience, including improved stress recovery rates, lower blood pressure, improved cognitive functions, enhanced mental stamina and focus, decreased violence and criminal activity, elevated moods and increased learning rates.”

There are hundreds more nudges and design strategies such as these that urban planners, architects, product designers, business owners, and homeowners can use to shape the environment around us to improve health and well-being. In the words of Winston Churchill:

“We shape our buildings; thereafter, our buildings shape us.”

The key is to be aware of how our environment affects us and to use this knowledge for good.

Calm Down, Cuddling With A Kitten Probably Won’t Kill You

If there’s one thing the internet loves more than cat videos, it’s scaremongering headlines about how your cat could kill you.

This phenomenon was out in full force this week, with headlines like “Cuddling your cute, fuzzy kitten could spell certain doom,” and “Cuddling a kitten could kill you, study finds.”

These unnerving warnings referred to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report about the U.S. prevalence of cat-scratch disease, a bacterial infection that people can contract from cats. But the idea that simply petting your cat carries a major risk of death is a far cry from reality.

“Yes, cat-scratch [disease] can be fatal, but it is in rare circumstances,” lead researcher Christina Nelson told The Huffington Post. “When people do have atypical manifestations or complications, they can be severe or can lead to death, but that would be an exception.”

Cat-scratch disease, usually transmitted to people via a cat scratch or bite, is much more likely to cause a mild infection. The rarer, severe complications can affect the brain and heart. Since most cat scratches won’t result in cat-scratch disease, the CDC recommends immediately washing any scratch or bite with hot soap and water, and seeking medical help if the site starts looking infected or a fever occurs.

Nelson’s research, which looked at insurance claims from 2005 to 2013, found that an estimated 12,000 people each year were diagnosed with cat-scratch disease, and 500 had symptoms severe enough that they had to be hospitalized. Most of those affected were children ages 5 to 9. Though that’s a significant number of people, it’s a relatively small proportion of the 45 million households that the American Pet Products Association estimates include cats.

Researchers did find that the proportion of people hospitalized has increased a bit over the years ― from 3.5 percent between 2005 and 2007, to 4.2 percent between 2011 and 2013. Nelson wasn’t sure why, but suggested it could be the result of doctors getting better at recognizing symptoms.

And when you understand what cat-scratch disease actually is, it’s pretty preventable. The infection is caused by the bacteria Bartonella henselae, which is carried by fleas and is present in their feces. That’s why in the U.S., Nelson said, cases are the most common in the South, where fleas are more prevalent.

Cats transmit the bacteria to humans if the flea droppings get lodged in their nails or teeth, and then they scratch or bite a person. Dogs can transmit it, too, though this is less common.

CDC spokeswoman Kate Fowlie pointed out there’s no evidence that simply cuddling or kissing your cat can lead to cat-scratch disease.

“The bacteria basically has to be inoculated into the skin,” Fowlie said.

Cats can also become infected with cat-scratch disease themselves. They usually don’t show any symptoms, but occasionally they’ll be ill enough to need veterinary treatment. Once infected, it’s unclear how long the bacteria remain in a cat’s system, Nelson said. She also was unsure whether a cat that’s still infected, but is completely free of fleas and flea droppings, can transmit the illness to people.

That said, since kittens are known to be more commonly infected, the CDC says that immunocompromised people who are looking to adopt a cat should seek out a cat older than one year. (A good idea anyway, since older cats in shelters often need some extra help finding a good home.)

And Nelson made it clear that the CDC is definitely not recommending that anyone give up their beloved pets.

“Cats have many benefits and we realize pets are important to people,” she said.

That’s exactly why Nelson said it’s important for people to be aware of the relatively simple ways to prevent cat-scratch disease. Those methods include making sure cats are treated (with veterinary guidance) for any fleas, avoiding rough play that could result in scratches and bites, and keeping cats from hunting outdoors, where they’re more likely to come into contact with the bacteria.

Sheldon Adelson Pours Money Into GOP Super PAC In Senate Fight

WASHINGTON ― Billionaires Sheldon and Miriam Adelson lead the march of wealthy megadonors pouring money into super PACs aiming to help Republicans keep or Democrats grab control of Congress.

On the GOP side, the Senate Leadership Fund, which is linked to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.), reported a massive haul of $ 28.2 million for August. Adelson and his wife alone gave $ 20 million, according to the Federal Election Commission.

On the Democratic side, Senate Majority PAC, which is tied to both Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (Nev.) and his potential heir Sen. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.), pulled in $ 11.6 million last month.

The money from Adelson, the most prolific donor to the GOP, provides Republicans with a major boost in the final months before Election Day, as they seek to maintain their hold on the Senate. Democrats are likely to pick up seats in the upper chamber, but are hoping to win enough to actually seize control. They had been leading in the super PAC money race up until Adelson’s August donation.

The casino magnate isn’t the only donor to give big to the Senate Leadership Fund last month. Chicago hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin contributed $ 2 million, and New York hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer chipped in $ 1 million. Petrodome Energy, a company owned by Texas donor Ed Bosarge Jr., contributed $ 1 million. American Crossroads, the once mighty super PAC founded by Karl Rove and run by the exact same staff as the Senate Leadership Fund, gave $ 1.3 million.

Across the aisle, the largest donor in August to Senate Majority PAC was Alexander Soros, a son of hedge fund billionaire and Democratic megadonor George Soros, with $ 1.25 million. Hedge fund billionaire S. Donald Sussman, real estate and casino magnate Neil Bluhm, and the Greater New York Hospital Association Management Corporation each donated $ 1 million.

These weren’t the only two super PACs working at the congressional level to report their finances on Tuesday. Granite State Solutions, which seeks to re-elect Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), received $ 4.8 million from the Senate Leadership Fund, $ 1.5 million from Adelson and $ 100,000 from James Davis, chairman of the New Balance shoe and athletic wear company.

House Majority PAC, which works to elect Democrats to the House, raised $ 7.1 million in August. Media mogul Fred Eychaner, one of the biggest Democratic Party donors, gave $ 3 million, and Sussman gave $ 2 million. The Oneida Indian Nation chipped in $ 500,000.

Labor unions were also major contributors to Senate Majority PAC and House Majority PAC. The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing, Pipefitting and Sprinkler Fitting Industry donated $ 250,000 each to both super PACs. The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers PAC gave $ 350,000 to Senate Majority PAC and $ 100,000 to House Majority PAC. The American Federation of Government Employees and the United Food and Commercial Workers union both gave $ 250,000 to Senate Majority PAC.

7 Things You Need to Know to Tame the Monkey Mind

The monkey mind is something every modern human is familiar with. It’s that incessant thought stream that no matter how hard you try never seems to settle down.

It’s the worries that keep you up at night, the assumptions that cause you grief, the projections you make about the future and the regrets and sentiments you go over from the past.

To tame the monkey mind takes commitment and a deep inner desire for peace. Calming the monkey mind is the first step on the path towards life mastery.

When you consciously realize that your thoughts are energy, and that the energetic implications of what you maintain focus on are actually creating your life to be based in either joy or suffering, you can be empowered to take control over your monkey mind and access the peace of mind that makes sheer existence a true gift.

    1. Seek Common Ground and Connection

Division is a distraction from the divine. When you see yourself as a lone wolf, you lose sight of the pack, and you struggle to survive, let alone thrive. Yet when you can look around and feel a connection to all the people you encounter, everything changes.

You start to focus on connection instead of seeing everything as separate. Nothing is separate. The sun in the sky keeps us all alive. The people around you complaining about their mundane daily disturbances are going through the motions just like you are, they’re merely at a different point in their personal evolution.

Instead of focusing on your independence and feeding your loneliness with divisive thought patterns, bring the focus back to finding common ground.

When you do this you shift your entire perspective.

    2. Look Deeper Than the Story

Society, the people you surround yourself with, your past experiences and your present belief system all work to strengthen the story you’re narrating in your head all day long. It’s so easy to attach to your story and your thoughts are the glue that binds you there.

If you struggle with self-esteem and that’s a part of your story then without a doubt your thoughts are the roots keeping that belief alive.

When you can remain present and focus on how you feel in each moment you can start to release the constant narration and let go of the belief structures embedded in your story that hold you back from realizing your true potential.

    3. Realize YOU Are Not Your Thoughts

Endless thoughts flow through your mind. A thousand thoughts pass through your mind every hour, and you have two options.

The first option is to allow your mind to act like a hose. Thoughts stream in through the top of the funnel and are directed out, they’re let go of, and they flow elsewhere without attachment.

The second option is to allow your mind to act like a filter. Thoughts attempt to pass through the filter but they get trapped. The filter of your mind clings to them for analysis and attachment. The filter gets all clogged up full of thoughts based in what you want and what you don’t want.

When you believe that every thought matters, that every thought that enters your brain is you, and that every thought needs to be examined, you become overburdened, overwhelmed, confused, directionless and prone to overanalyzing. You create internal resistance because you believe on a subconscious level that you are your thoughts.

When you allow your thoughts to show up and pass away without clinging on to them in an attempt to analyze and integrate, you access a freedom that few people embody. You enter into a vibrational state of allowing which is expansive and creates space for you to access the peace and pure joy of being.

    4. Let Go of Excuses

I don’t have time. I’m too busy. These are everyone’s favorite excuses for not allowing connection, acceptance, and peace to enter your life on the level of experience.

When you’re ready to let go of the monkey mind and free yourself from the chains that keep you stuck in your head and separated from the world around you, you stop making excuses.

Breaking down the mental constructs that you’ve been attached to and strengthening for your entire life is no easy task, but it is possible and the more excuses you make, the longer it will take to break away from the mental chatter.

    5. Develop a Drama Free Mentality

There’s a tendency in our society to become addicted to drama. The boldest example of this is television, you flick on the TV and suddenly you’re immersed in a world wrought with drama.

Breaking the cycle of drama will create more peace in your life, thoughts and relationships. Over time you can consciously train your brain to let go of the things you would normally make a big dramatic deal over.

Your life can be whatever you want it to be, a soap opera or a peaceful expansive existence that plays out moment by moment.

    6. Release Judgement

What were they thinking? What’s wrong with them? Why are they doing that?

Judgment creates an inner resistance, a pushing against what is without ever changing what is. When you allow yourself to move into acceptance, even with the things you don’t particularly like, the monkey mind backs down.

The monkey mind thrives on judgment and drama, it’s the fuel that feeds the fire of your thoughts.

When you would normally jump into judgment, whether it’s over someone else’s actions or your own, try to practice allowing things to just be as they are. Allowing isn’t the same as condoning, it’s simply an energetic shift which helps you release attachment and aversion, the monkey mind’s favorite snacks.

    7. Practice Awareness

Practice awareness of the thoughts streaming through your mind. You can’t one day wake up and decide to tame the monkey mind without bringing awareness of the thoughts themselves to the forefront. Awareness is the balm that soothes the irritation the monkey mind loves to create.

Awareness is different from attachment because it integrates with the energy of allowing. Thoughts pass by and your awareness shines a light upon them without the incessant desire to unconsciously attach to their meaning.

In every moment you can bring awareness to the forefront of what you’re feeling and thinking. When you notice anger and irritation bubbling up let yourself become consciously aware of these thoughts and your reaction to them and then just let them go.

Congress: Pass Mental Health First Aid Funding

In a crowded Chinese restaurant a few years ago, a colleague saw his panic-struck brother grab at his own throat – a telltale sign he was choking. He instinctively applied the Heimlich maneuver, dislodging the offending piece of broccoli.

He learned the Heimlich in a first aid class, which was clearly time and money well spent.

We heavily invest in prevention, early intervention and awareness for every conceivable disease from the neck down. Like my colleague and millions of others, we train adults and children in CPR and First Aid because choking and bad car accidents happen, often without warning.

Yet somehow, when it comes to mental illnesses, we take everything we know about prevention, early intervention and emergency response and throw it out the window. The subtext is that the issues caused by these diseases are someone’s fault, or that people need to just pull themselves together, or that “it will never happen to me.”

Members of Congress, aware of the kind of mental health crises that are all too commonplace, are pushing bipartisan legislation that will help create a nation of well-informed mental health first responders, a nation of people who know what alcohol abuse looks like, how to handle and support someone having hallucinations, what to do to truly assess someone for risk of suicide.

The Mental Health First Aid Act, championed by Reps. Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) and Doris Matsui (D-CA), requires the federal mental health agency to award grants to initiate and sustain mental health awareness training. Individuals eligible for inclusion in training would include teachers, law enforcement, emergency personnel and veterans who are likely to be confronted with Americans experiencing a mental health crisis.

The goal of Mental Health First Aid is to train those individuals in how to safely de-escalate crisis situations, recognize the signs and symptoms of mental illness, and encourage timely referral to mental health services.

Sometimes the person in crisis is you.

An 18-year old girl in Central California was giving away her possessions and was on the verge of suicide when she realized she might be pregnant. Having just taken the Mental Health First Aid course in her art class, she realized she was in deep trouble, saw a counselor and got help. She readily admits that had she not taken the class and realized the symptoms of her own mental illness she would not be here today.

Because of Mental Health First Aid training, her suicide note did not become her tragic last words, but a school art project and a poignant symbol of how we can all save lives, and save souls, and sometimes save ourselves.

One in five Americans will experience a mental health condition in the course of any given year. Mental illness is a disorder just like any other – it can be acute, or chronic. It can be mild, or severe. It can have roots in biology, genetics or life experience – like the death of a parent or a nearby terrorist attack.

And it can happen to you. It can happen to your children. It can happen to your neighbor, your friend, your coworker.

What was my colleague’s brother supposed to do when he was choking at that restaurant? Make an appointment with a gastroenterologist to remove the food stuck in his throat? Funding treatment services and supporting public education for emergency response are not trade-offs, just like teaching the Heimlich maneuver and financing specialty medical care are not a zero-sum game. We can and must do both.

Mental illnesses should be treated no differently than physical ailments. When someone you know is hearing voices that aren’t there, or drowning in grief from the death of a child, or experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress from the loss of his fellow soldiers, you need to know how to help them in the heat of a crisis moment.

    We all do.

Trump Doubles Down On Plan To Ban Immigrants Based On Country, Ideology

Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump reiterated on Monday that he would keep out certain immigrants and refugees ― especially Muslims ― in response to a bombing in New York on Saturday that authorities blame on a naturalized U.S. citizen.

“You can’t have vetting if you don’t look at ideology,” Trump said at an event in Fort Myers, Florida, before accusing his Democratic opponent of being weak on the threat from terrorism. “Hillary Clinton refuses to consider an applicant’s worldview and thus their likelihood of being recruited into the terror cause at some later date, which is going to happen in many, many cases.”

It was an argument not just for banning terrorists, but also those who could become terrorists ― a murky category when applied to the New York bombing, allegedly by a man who came to the U.S. as a child more than two decades ago.

The suspect, 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami, reportedly immigrated to the U.S. from Afghanistan in 1995 as the son of an asylum seeker. That means the attack doesn’t serve as an easy example of weaknesses in the current vetting system for immigrants. Rahami came to the U.S. before immigration policy changes made after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, and arrived here as a child. Nor can he be used as proof of a risk from refugees, because he wasn’t one.

Asylum and refugee status are often confused, because they both apply to individuals who say they are persecuted in their native countries. But they’re not the same. In asylum cases, the individual comes to the U.S. and then applies. Refugees are screened outside the U.S. and then resettle here. By the time a refugee arrives on U.S. soil, the person has already undergone security checks.

While U.S. intelligence officials have expressed concerns about vetting Syrian refugees, citing instability in the country, they haven’t said screening is impossible, and it certainly isn’t non-existent. FBI Director James Comey said last year that it was impossible to guarantee a risk-free process, but also that officials “are much better” at vetting than they had been. All refugees are screened in processes that include in-person interviews and database checks, and Syrians go through additional steps, according to the administration.

Of the 10,000 Syrian refugees welcomed to the U.S. in the last year, about 60 percent were minors, according to the State Department.

Rahami is Muslim, which fits more neatly into Trump’s arguments. The GOP nominee last year promised a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.”

Trump has since shifted to a ban on people from countries “compromised by terrorism” rather than a ban on all Muslims, but his policies clearly target the faith and Muslim-majority countries. He said in July that “you could say it’s an expansion” of his initial Muslim ban. Trump said in August that there should be “extreme, extreme vetting” of those who want to enter the United States, using an ideological test that would include questions about Sharia law.

On Monday, Trump said again that the U.S. “should temporarily suspend immigration entirely from regions where safe and adequate screening cannot occur.”

Trump also accused Clinton of having “the most open borders policy of anyone ever to seek the presidency.”

Clinton doesn’t support an open-borders policy ― nor does President Barack Obama ― even though she does not share Trump’s call for a wall between the U.S. and Mexico. She called on Monday for “tough vetting,” although she has not reversed her position on admitting more Syrian refugees.

“I am absolutely in favor of and have long been an advocate for tough vetting,” Clinton said at a press conference. She added that she wants “a better visa system,” noting that the 9/11 attackers came to the U.S. on student, tourist and business visas.

“These were not refugees who got into airplanes and attacked our city and our country,” Clinton said. “So let’s not get diverted and distracted by the kind of campaign rhetoric we hear coming from the other side.”

How to Waste Your Entire Life: A Quick Guide To Pleasure

The easiest way to waste decades of your life is to mistake pleasure for fulfillment.

Pleasure lives in the realm of now. It’s made of feeling and emotion, which are both very important, but predictably unstable. It’s impossible to base a meaningful life solely on the pursuit of pleasure.

At the extreme end of pleasure: over-eating, over-sleeping, chronic masturbation and sex addiction, television, benders, cocaine and ice cream (the verdict is still out here). Push the button, get the stimulus. Constant stimulation to dull the pain, anxiety and existential uncertainty of being a human in society.

It feels good to feel good. So why not try to feel good all the time? Pass the mint chocolate chip, please.

Fulfillment is concerned with your highest vision for the future. It doesn’t equate pain or discomfort today with pain or discomfort tomorrow. It assumes that the best is always yet to come. Those looking for fulfillment out of life will do things that aren’t fun now, to reap massive rewards later.

In his book Autobiography of a Yogi, Indian spiritual guru Paramahansa Yogananda recalls a conversation between a sage and his student:

The student exclaimed, “Master, you are wonderful….You have renounced riches and comforts to seek God and teach us wisdom.”

To which the wise sage replied:

“You are reversing the case! I have left a few paltry rupees, a few petty pleasures, for a cosmic empire of endless bliss. How then have I denied myself anything? I know the joy of sharing the treasure. Is that a sacrifice? The shortsighted worldly folk are verily the real renunciates! They relinquish an unparalleled divine possession for a poor handful of earthly toys!”

This irony captures the essence of seeking pleasure over fulfillment.

The other way toward fulfillment: Training for a triathlon, starting a business, writing a book, recording an album. All of these things can bring pleasure in the short term. But more often than not, they do not. They are not fun. They are a constant struggle. They take years to master. They are never urgent and the easiest things to postpone.

(Especially if a new season of Walking Dead is on.)

But these are also the types of activities that, done day after day, lead to the highest quality of life and most pleasure long term. Not the acute, “OMG this is so fun” type of pleasure — but the more subtle, albeit equally exhilarating feeling of overarching satisfaction with one’s life.

These types of activities make you feel like you’re worth a damn. And that’s important. Because you are.

Pleasure versus fulfillment is the difference between spending your time and investing it. Or the difference between consuming and creating.

The time will pass anyway — but at the end of a lifetime, what will you have to show for it?
Some of us will have 100,000 hours of television, a leased Mercedes and a bunch of clothes we got sick of last year as evidence that we were here.

Others will have created a legacy that leaves the world a better place and makes a difference for people we’ve never even met.

    Which one will you be?

3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships

There are so many things we can all do to improve our existing relationships, regardless of their nature. But if we only applied these 3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships, we would certainly make them more fulfilling for all parties involved.

    2016-09-19-1474308214-435847-Couplewithbikes_iStock_70626075_LARGE.jpg

    #1 Choose Loyalty
This of course means being there when it matters. But it also means standing up for the relationship by not getting involved in gossip talks with others, about our lover, friend, sibling or whoever that person may be. The loyalty we show when the person is there to see is powerful, but the one we display to others when that person is not there to witness, can make the relationship bullet proof.

    #2 Choose To Give
Relationships are, in many instances, like joint bank accounts. The account holders can only withdraw what they’ve put in. And the more they put in, the more “compound interest” they can expect to reap! Contrary to common belief, our main responsibility in a relationship is to give. It’s always easy to question the other “joint account holder’s” behavior, but if we have the relationship at heart, we will seek to give first.

    #3 Choose Truthfulness
There’s always a fork in the road in any relationships. One side of the fork seems to commonly offer a wider and smoother path, whereas the other often looks narrower and bumpier. This comes in the form of an event or a situation when we have to choose between the plain truth or… a “twisted” one. As hard as it is to say, we should always choose the truth. When we do, not only does it display that we stand for our word, it also echoes our loyalty and our willingness to continue to give to the relationship.

The endless choices we now have in all areas of life, affect our perceptions. Perceptions like the new “flavor of the month” or the novelty, ought to be better than the “old” one… Or the sense that everything is disposable, because after all, I can always get a new upgraded version of what I have… It brings also the notion of “change,” that we have to look for change at all costs, because if we don’t, we may become obsolete or “passé.”

When it comes to our relationships, we seriously think that we have to be very cautious about the subtle effects of the “endless choices society” we live in. We think it’s time for all of us to make basic choices that will empower the relationships we cherish. The kind of choices that are not new, on the contrary, they are rooted, old fashioned choices, that define who we are, where we come from, and more importantly can remind the other person in the relationship, what we intend to continue to build upon.

Double Standard? What If Clinton Hinted Trump Should Be Shot?

    2014-02-03-BothSidesNowLogoPlaincolhirescopy1.jpg

    LISTEN HERE:

    By Mark Green

In a week of Deplorables, Pneumonia-Gate, and Lies about Birther Lies, guess which got the least coverage? Lowry & Barrett debate why the candidates are indeed graded on a curve and, short of sex change operation, what Hillary should do about it. “HERE”S what you have to lose!”

#BasketofDeplorabes. Was this essentially a classic gaffe. impolitic yet true? Rich Lowry of the National Review says no because it was both self-wounding and untrue since half the GOP are not racists and nativists…which is why she apologized for it.

After the Host notes that she apologized for the numeral not the noun, Wayne Barrett — author of biographies of both Trump & Giuliani — doesn’t disagree. “While we can talk about the percentage, she should never confuse deplorable views with deplorable people — and certainly not call them irredeemable.”

Rich offers a joking codicil: while some number are perhaps racially intolerant, “none of our readers are.” And he adds a both-side-are rebuttal that “probably as many Democrats believe Bush43 was behind 9/11.”

Host: As for whether half of Trump supporters are “deplorable”, Wayne correctly said that’s for people like him and me to say. Which should not be hard when a) Trump’s obviously appealing to racial resentment, b) 60%+ of his supporters believe in birtherism and banning Muslims, a third wish the South had won the Civil War (or is being pro-slavery just ‘political correctness?'”) Quantity matters both now and when the GOP tries to reconstitute after November 8th.

And neither 60% nor a third of Democrats believe Bush43 was behind 9/11. Actually, only one party has a ‘fringe’ on top.

Hillary’s Health. So she lies about everything and she tried to “power through” pneumonia to attend the 9/11 Memorial Service? Rich and Wayne correctly note that that video of her near-collapsing is unusual and powerful. Lowry puts this problem in the context of her supposed secrecy and dishonesty, urging that she should have held a press conference explaining her health for long as it took. “Trump is trying to ‘pivot’ by being more disciplined and reading from teleprompters; Hillary she also do something different to address her problem.”

By elevating her health as an issue even more? And four days of saturation coverage on her health? Wayne emphasizes that “she never lied about her health, just didn’t disclose it right away. Health is an issue but low on the scale, especially since we’re about to see her debate for hours and campaign vigorously.” Also, Barrett is amazed and dismayed that while the press went red-alert on deplorables and pneumonia, “it completely ignored the tape showing that on the actual 9/11 in 2001, Trump bragged that now one of his buildings ‘was the tallest in downtown Manhattan.'”

Financial Scandals. We discuss the subject of Trump’s financials, especially his refusal to release his tax returns, Newsweek‘s cover expose of his multiple conflicts with governing should he win and his so-called personal charity. Consensus: these are all important and relevant but, as Wayne’s career of exposing such things and watching little pick-up, it may be something too complicated to cover and ready about.

“I’m not sure that any of this matters electorally, Rich concludes. And then, there’s no video of Trump collapsing in an ocean of ill-gotten gains.”

Birtherism. It was like watching Houdini escape chains while submergd in a vat of water. All of us are impressed/depressed that Trump commandeered live cable coverage for a half hour promoting his private profit-making Trump Hotel in DC and then take 27 seconds to say, after five years of implying the opposite, ok, Obama was born in US but Clinton started birtherism.

Rich and Wayne are unsure that he’ll get away with this manuever. Indeed, for a day the Media piled on with blaring headlines and broadcast news leads about his “lies”…but then some local terror attacks seized the headlines. Isn’t a problem that while his problems get one-off coverage, like discussing shooting Clinton or now Birtherism, Clinton’s emails are released drip-drip monthly by court order, regenerating headlines each time?

Wayne’s analysis is that print publications are not to blame, lauding the New York Times and Washington Post especially for its deep dives, “but the problem are broadcasters. They know how to pick up scandals yet for some reason are letting him breeze by his.” Rich doesn’t disagree, explaining how he can just bulldoze and bully TV and radio broadcasters, who often have scarce tine to follow-up and want to get him back for future interviews. {Two who do defrock him — Chris Matthews and Jay Tapper.)

Is this issue now over, as his surrogates insisted the next day? It depends whether journalists fold or follow-up. For example does Lester Holt ask Trump in front of 70 million, “Since the President released his long-form birth certificate three years ago, why did it take until just before a presidential election to admit it…now that you are, will you apologize for wrongly implying he wasn’t a legitimate president for five years?

Double Standard? Both Right and Left attack the Media. But how accurate is it that there’s now a double standard where her stumbles attract extensive attention while his avalanche of lies don’t?

Rich acknowledges that Trump can artfully candidly acknowledges that many grade Trump on a curve precisely because a) she keeps emphasizing that he’s unusually dangerous and b) Clinton is indeed far more experienced about public affairs, which Wayne mocks as saying, in effect, “we should harder on her because she’s the better candidate?” He then reiterates his point about the different levels of culpability of print vs. electronic coverage.

Host: The show ends before we can get to whether any double standard is the result of misogyny, which many think was behind Matt Lauer’s much-panned and far rougher treatment of Clinton. Without any data to refer to, the Host opines that it is harder for a women because of centuries of prejudice against women and that Trump implies this every time he states how strong he is, adores Putin, says she lacks “stamina” and “doesn’t look presidential.”

He is perfecting a move so unique that, like the Fosbury Flop, it’ll be named after him: The Trump Trick – winning votes based on fear & lies and then refusing to apologize assuming that the both-sides-do-it media and credulous anxious voters can’t keep up with his volume of repeated mendacity…not to mention his entertaining, charming-rouge lounge act when he admits to pay-for-play de-fanging critics.

Challenge: how can the Media and Clinton decode his strategy? To avoid appearing weak and defensive, she needs a formula that combines explaining her positive ideas with mocking attacks on his avalanche of sleazy lies and rhetorical questions. (“HERE’S what you have to lose!”…”one of us up here makes mistakes, the other lies most of the time according to PolitaFact”.)

Every great half back and candidate fumbles. But great ones (see Obama’s speech in 2008 on Rev. Wright) recover them and stay on offense. She’ll have the opportunity to do so in the Debates and in extensive paid media. More to come.

Stephen Burlingham Going Beyond Art for Youth with Cancer

Cancer. The word that terrifies us, at any age. But when a young person is struck by it, it seems all the more tragic. To help cope with this harsh reality, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who joined together to form WHO Cares and created The Lounge at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK). This is a place that allows teenagers to feel like teenagers and immerse in an atmosphere far unlike a hospital’s (program).

The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center Teen and Young Adult (TYA@MSK) Program offers special services to MSK’s teen and young adult population.

The Lounge is a space designed especially for this unique age group that was made possible by a $ 1 million donation from Teen Cancer America. The nonprofit organization, co-founded by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who, partners with hospitals throughout the U.S. to develop specialized facilities for teens and young adults with cancer.

Inspired to go beyond art to create a space for healing, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center turned to a new friend of mine, the extraordinary thinker and doer Stephen Burlingham. Stephen, speaking to our foundation’s young global leaders this summer, explained his recent piece “Whisper” featured in the MSK Lounge for Teens and Young Adults:

I wanted to go beyond art. “Whisper,” for me, is hope for the patients, the family and friends of children living with cancer. My work springs directly from envisioning humanity’s cumulative knowledge and belief encapsulated within an ever-expanding membrane that emanates from the Elements themselves.

My work stands for the universal Membrane and involves my search to find the spiritual, the mindful passage, to allow one to break through our restrains and to see what lies beyond our sensory world. To perceive the Intangible – that which is unable to be touched or grasped, that lacks a physical presence.

Stephen is no stranger when it comes with working with children in needs. The grand-grandson of the renowned designer Louis Comfort Tiffany, Stephen was commissioned for designing the award for the Save the Children’s 75th Anniversary Benefit in 2007. Three visionary leaders were honored at that benefit with Save the Children’s Global Humanitarian Awards — former President George H. W. Bush, former President Bill Clinton, and Melinda Gates.

Unlike any other artist I have met, Stephen is charismatic, spiritual, intelligent – and deeply philosophical. If you didn’t know he was an artist, you might think he is a humanitarian.

One of his works, a permanent stone sculpture entitled “The Crossing,” was erected in the ancient port of Bodrum, Turkey, on the Mediterranean. He told me the piece now bears witness to the eternal laws that are constant over time, language and culture – and the great civilizations which unite humanity.

Another of his work in progress, “The Gateway,” is an installation project that explores the frontier between the tangible and the intangible. “Traversing this universal Membrane is at the core of my work,’ he said, “and the search to find the spiritual, the mindful passage, to allow one to break through our restraints and see what lies beyond our sensory world. To perceive the Intangible.”

Cancer can sometimes feel like that, intangible and out of one’s grasp. The artist speaks of his piece as a way to “look through and beyond.” I took this as a nod to those battling cancer. The Lounge at MSK provides an escape for teenagers who want to be able to live their lives as if they are somewhere else other than a hospital.

“I believe it is up to each patient and family member to choose to see and to take from your piece what you intended to offer them,” Stephen told us.

His work “Whisper,” I believe, is aptly named. Whisper surround hospitals. In Stephen’s whispers, we see something else – a different way to speak up. Among the whispers are the intangible possibility that things can get better, and that people may truly heal.

Meera Gandhi, an activist and CEO of The Giving Back Foundation, is a good friend of us both. Meera helped me gain some insight into Stephen’s life and work:

When I walked into Sloan Kettering and got to the lounge, the yellow art piece “Whisper” by Stephen Burlingham reminded me of the sun. I assumed Stephen was thinking of sunlight and energy to heal when he designed that.

The Lounge has great energy and is so comfortable and has the guitar from The Who hanging on the wall. Stephen shared that he had such joy creating the piece and hoped many teens would be healed of cancer and enjoy great downtime in the relaxed lounge created at MSK.

Meera received our foundation’s Humanitarian of the Year Award in 2015.

Jeremy Hu, gallerist and global adviser to our foundation, agrees:

When you step into The Lounge at Sloan Kettering, the first thing you notice is the vibrancy of Stephen’s work brightening up the walls, signaling a hopeful tomorrow, one that is cancer-free. There is such peace in Burlingham’s pieces. The main element blends seamlessly with the world around it. It lifts you up.

A challenge we have as a foundation and young global leadership program is to try to relate to our readers the breadth and scope of those thought leaders and global citizens whom we meet during the course of our activities. Stephen Burlingham is perhaps the most intellectually engaging and challenging individual we have encountered. One piece on his hospital installation does not begin to unravel his myriad mysteries.

With this in mind, we have determined to create a series about his artistic achievements. Stephen’s world revolves around CoAu – the iconic markers of the paradigm shift of Humanity’s Consciousness, The Gateway, the physical portal of the new consciousness, and 0M1.org, a community forming around this new consciousness.

As we sat around our dining table, we discussed with Stephen his vision. In short, the artist sees three current parts: Joining the idea/vision, a shared curiosity in Humanity’s future and the cosmos; Collaborating in the realization of the Gateway; and Bringing together thought leaders and interested parties (people, universities, think tanks, etc.). Our young team seemed anxiously eager to absorb his ideas.

A creative life force such as Stephen Burlingham is difficult to encapsulate and even harder to pigeonhole. Young patients living with cancer who find themselves in The Lounge at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center don’t care – they simply find enormous comfort in his piece “Whisper.”

and even harder to pigeonhole. Photo: Stephen Burlingham.

Our foundation is actively discussing how best we might engage him in the future. Should he be Artist-in-Residence, Humanitarian of the Year, or simply honorary chair of our Global Advisory Board? Whatever role he may one day assume with us, it is clear that Stephen Burlingham is going to change the world.

Trump’s Behavior Similar To Male Chimpanzee, Says Jane Goodall

Donald Trump’s antics remind famed anthropologist Jane Goodall of the primates she spent decades studying in the wild.

“In many ways the performances of Donald Trump remind me of male chimpanzees and their dominance rituals,” Goodall told The Atlantic. “In order to impress rivals, males seeking to rise in the dominance hierarchy perform spectacular displays: stamping, slapping the ground, dragging branches, throwing rocks.”

Goodall added, “the more vigorous and imaginative the display, the faster the individual is likely to rise in the hierarchy, and the longer he is likely to maintain that position.”

To date, we’ve not seen Trump drag branches or throw rocks, although anything is possible. Instead of physical displays, the Republican presidential nominee has stuck to verbal ones ― bragging about his penis, launching personal attacks and resorting to racist and sexist insults.

Trump is set to debate his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, on Sept. 26. When it happens, Goodall told The Atlantic she’ll be thinking of “Mike,” a chimpanzee she studied that displayed dominance by kicking kerosene cans, creating a racket that sent would-be challengers fleeing.

Unsurprisingly, Trump has already boasted that he will come out on top, telling The New York Times “I know how to handle Hillary.”

Whether his strategy includes childish tidbits has yet to be seen. Tony Schwartz, co-author of Trump’s book The Art of the Deal, however, bets it will.

“Trump has severe attention problems and simply cannot take in complex information — he will be unable to practice for these debates,” Schwartz told the Times. “Trump will bring nothing but his bluster to the debates. He’ll use sixth-grade language, he will repeat himself many times, he won’t complete sentences, and he won’t say anything of substance.”

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

    The 6 Secrets of Self-Control

    2016-09-09-1473458162-6578277-TheSixSecretsofSelfControlHP.jpg

What is it about self-control that makes it so difficult to rely on? Self-control is a skill we all possess (honest); yet we tend to give ourselves little credit for it. Self-control is so fleeting for most that when Martin Seligman and his colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania surveyed two million people and asked them to rank order their strengths in 24 different skills, self-control ended up in the very bottom slot.

Watch Tommy Boy Explain His Struggles With Self-Control

When it comes to self-control, it is so easy to focus on our failures that our successes tend to pale in comparison. And why shouldn’t they? Self-control is an effort that’s intended to help achieve a goal. Failing to control yourself is just that–a failure. If you’re trying to avoid digging into that bag of chips after dinner because you want to lose a few pounds and you succeed Monday and Tuesday nights only to succumb to temptation on Wednesday by eating four servings’ worth of the empty calories, your failure outweighs your success. You’ve taken two steps forward and four steps back.

With this success/failure dichotomy in mind, I give you six strategies for self-control. Some are obvious, others counter-intuitive, but all will help you eliminate those pesky failures and ensure your efforts to boost your willpower are successful enough to keep you headed in the right direction for achieving your goals.

    Self-Control Secret #1 – Meditate

Meditation actually trains your brain to become a self-control machine. Even simple techniques like mindfulness, which involves taking as little as five minutes a day to focus on nothing more than your breathing and your senses, improves your self-awareness and your brain’s ability to resist destructive impulses. Buddhist monks appear calm and in control for a reason.

    Self-Control Secret #2 – Eat

File this one in the counter-intuitive category, especially if you’re having trouble controlling your eating. Your brain burns heavily into your stores of glucose when attempting to exert self-control. If your blood sugar is low, you are far more likely to succumb to destructive impulses. Sugary foods spike your sugar levels quickly and leave you drained and vulnerable shortly thereafter. Eating something that provides a slow burn for your body, such as whole grain rice or meat, will give you a longer window of self-control. So, if you’re having trouble keeping yourself out of the company candy bin when you’re hungry, make sure you eat something else if you want to have a fighting chance.

    Self-Control Secret #3 – Exercise

Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a neurotransmitter that makes your brain feel soothed and keeps you in control of your impulses. If you’re having trouble resisting the impulse to walk over to the office next door to let somebody have it, just keep on walking. You should have the impulse under control by the time you get back.

    Self-Control Secret #4 – Sleep

When you are tired, your brain cells’ ability to absorb glucose is highly diminished. As I explained in Secret #2, your brain’s ability to control impulses is nil without glucose. What’s worse, without enough sleep you are more likely to crave sugary snacks to compensate for low glucose levels. So, if you’re trying to exert self-control over your eating, getting a good night’s sleep–every night–is one of the best moves you can make.

    Self-Control Secret #5 – Ride the Wave

Desire has a strong tendency to ebb and flow like the tide. When the impulse you need to control is strong, waiting out this wave of desire is usually enough to keep yourself in control. The rule of thumb here is to wait at least 10 minutes before succumbing to temptation. You’ll often find that the great wave of desire is now little more than a ripple that you have the power to step right over.

    Self-Control Secret #6 – Forgive Yourself

A vicious cycle of failing to control oneself followed by feeling intense self-hatred and disgust is common in attempts at self-control. These emotions typically lead to over-indulging in the offending behavior. When you slip up, it is critical that you forgive yourself and move on. Don’t ignore how the mistake makes you feel; just don’t wallow in it. Instead, shift your attention to what you’re going to do to improve yourself in the future.

    Putting These Strategies to Work

The important thing to remember is you have to give these strategies the opportunity to work. This means recognizing the moments where you are struggling with self-control and, rather than giving in to impulse, taking a look at the Six Secrets and giving them a go before you give in.

    Foot Drop

    What is foot drop?
Foot drop is the inability to raise the front part of the foot due to weakness or paralysis of the tibialis anterior muscle that lifts the foot (Figure 1). A common symptom of foot drop is a high steppage gait, often characterized by raising the thigh up in an exaggerated fashion while walking. When a person with foot drop walks, the foot slaps down onto the floor.

    2016-09-15-1473960001-2882617-foot1.PNG

Foot drop usually results from an injury to the peroneal nerve which is susceptible to injury at any point of its course. The peroneal nerve begins from the L4, L5, S1 and S2 nerve roots and joins the tibial nerve to form the sciatic nerve (Figure 2). The sciatic nerve starts in the lower back and runs through the buttock and lower limb.

    2016-09-15-1473964839-1700154-foot2.PNG

In the lower thigh, just above the back of the knee, the sciatic nerve divides into two nerves, the tibial and peroneal nerves, which innervate different parts of the lower leg (Figure 3). The common peroneal nerve then travels anterior around the fibular neck, dividing into superficial and deep peroneal nerves. The deep peroneal nerve gives innervation to the tibialis anterior muscle of the lower leg, which is responsible for dorsiflexion of the ankle (Figure 4).

    2016-09-15-1473964883-8532324-foot3.PNG

    2016-09-15-1473964901-5244603-Foot4.PNG

Conditions Causing Foot Drop (Figure 5):
A herniated disc compressing the L5 nerve root may cause foot drop. Another cause of foot drop can be a lumbosacral plexus injury, pelvic fracture. Foot drop may also be caused by a sciatic nerve injury, like a hip dislocation. The common peroneal division of the sciatic nerve is commonly injured during fracture dislocation injuries involving the hip. An injury to the knee, such as a knee dislocation may also cause foot drop. In the event of a knee dislocation, it is important to check for common peroneal nerve and popliteal artery injury. In established compartment syndrome, foot drop is a late finding. Irreversible muscle and nerve ischemia occurs in patients if fasciotomy is not performed. Fasciotomy should be done early. Four hours of ischemia may be tolerated but by eight hours, the damage is often irreversible.

    2016-09-15-1473964936-7620194-foot5.PNG

Treatment of Peroneal Nerve Injury/Foot Drop:
If a disc herniation in the low back is impinging on the nerve and causing symptoms of foot drop, then the herniated disc should be treated or removed. EMG and nerve studies should be done for the patient. Recovery may take one year to 18 months. The big toe will be the last to recover. If recovery is not achieved, explore the nerve for repair, graft or tendon transfer.
